74% of New Zealand teenagers binge drink this means they simply drink to get drunk. On average a boy will have his first drink at 11 years of age while a girl 13 years of age this is when the problem starts as these children get addicted.
What we don’t realize is that this has a very negative effect on our developing bodies. Alcohol delays sexual development in teenagers and causes liver problems later on in life. But most importantly it affects our brain. Drinking interferes with the development of the brain, causing permanent changes in the ability to learn and remember it kills brain cells.
This is where problems start when this starts to happen to teenagers they find it hard to learn and give up then drop out of school!!!! Do you want to be a teenage drop out and work at McDonalds for the rest of your life?
You only have one brain and it is irreplaceable so look after it unlike the liver, alcohol slowly breaks down your liver. The liver is the filtering system in your body so it is a very important organ when you have problems with your liver it causes you to have weird sleep patterns, mood, and personality psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression shortened attention span and problems with coordination such as a shaking of the hands do you want this to happen to

Im sure most of you sitting here today have all seen a drunken person. You may notice that when teenagers are drunk or under the influence of alcohol they do very silly and regrettable things. Im sure there are a few people in this room that can relate to this. Behavior in intoxicated teenagers can range from violence anger issues, and most commonly sexual behavior. 57% of unplanned teenage pregnancy is a result of drunken unprotected sex.
When someone is drunk their reactions are delayed you’re less sensitive to pain, and you don’t hear, see or taste as well. The effect also applies to your feelings and emotions I have personally experienced this . In addition alcohol depresses brain functions, reducing your ability to judge situations, yourself and others accurately this is when teenagers put themselves in danger of being raped or sexually harassed.
Teenage drinking and driving is one of New Zealand’s biggest issues and is costing the New Zealand government millions of dollars a year. 3 in 7 alcohol related accidents are a result of drunk teenagers or teenagers over the legal limit. In America nearly 60 per cent of 18 to 24 year old current drinkers who failed to complete high school begun to drink before the age of 16 and a half. Also as a result of drinking teenagers find themselves in fights or in dangerous places where death
The article “Why the Drinking Age Should be Lowered: An Option based upon Research” is about twenty years of research based underage drinking done by Ruth Engs. It talks about the way things were in the past compared to how things are now. The research done for this article shows that binge drinking is mostly found in the age below 21 due to the lack of being taught responsible drinking habits. In this article there are many statistics dealing with drinking at a college level over a long span of
Simply remarking that such a decision is dangerous fails to suffice as concrete evidence of the negative effects of underage alcohol consumption, and so statistical evidence must be given. Approximately five thousand underage drinkers die each year; the most prevalent cause is, not surprisingly, motor vehicle accidents. What many do not understand is what other factors constitute the other approximately three thousand; sixteen hundred to homicides, that is, murders and other deliberate killings, as well as 300 to suicide, usually caused by an exacerbation of underlying depression or other psychological difficulties. The remaining thousand are usually caused by such grisly circumstances as falling, burning, and drowning. While this may seem a relatively small number in the vast amounts of the twelve to twenty year old age group, estimates are that within the past month one-quarter of underage persons used alcohol, while two-thirds of those were binge drinkers. Not only does underage drinking increase the chance of dying in related incidents it encourages other destructive behaviors: engage in sexual activities, carry a plethora of illegal substances, and correlations have even been found that links underage drinking to poor performance in school. Other observations have been made that negatively link underage drinking with mental
Alcohol is causing the brains of these children to be poisoned, as it is a neurotoxin. The excessive consumption of alcohol can interfere with the absorption of vitamin B, which helps prevent the brain from being able to function correctly. Drinking above the recommended levels can cause brain disorders later on in life. Some symptoms of these disorders include: difficulties learning and problems memorizing things, and difficulties with balance.
There are many consequences of binge drinking. It causes a lot of health problems in an adolescent’s life, possibly short or long term. Feeling nauseated, having a hangover and memory loss are just a few of many things that are short term. In addition to short term effects, the long term effects are more severe and even deadly. One of the worst long term effects of binge drinking is the loss of brain stem cells. Dr Fulton Crews, mentioned that “The adolescent 's brain is much more sensitive to alcohol toxicity than adults’, including being vulnerable to cell death.”
Binge drinking is the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time, consuming when teens drink is, “’ to get drunk as possible, as quickly and cheaply as possible.”’ (Listfield). Teens are gaining a standard for hard liquor. “’Hard Liquor is increasingly replacing beer in drinking games. (Listfield) ‘“Kids easily drink seven or eight shots at a time.”’ (qtd by Gabby). Binge drinking is very common in teenagers. Teenagers believe the more you drink, the faster you get drunk and
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Many young people are facing the consequences of excessive drinking, at a too early age. Because of this issue, underage drinking is a leading public health problem. Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking including about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings (1–5).
Drinking among teenagers is prone to cause long term damages in their life. At the adolescent stage, teenagers brain are still developing up until the they are in the 20’s. It is a fact that alcohol causes brain damages to anyone who consumes it but because of this occurrence in adolescent’s body, they are more affected by this. According to Saner in the article Health: Drunk young things: Teenage drinkers don 't just risk making fools of
Underage drinking is a very eminent problem for Americans today. Some may not know that the human brain continues to develop until the age of twenty-five. Underage drinking can weaken neurological development, which could cause minors to make bad decisions, have memory loss, slower thought processes, and even acquire irreversible brain damage. Drinking when your body and mind are not fully developed can leave damaging effects on a person’s social abilities, neurological abilities, and overall health.
Alcohol can cause alterations in the structure, and the consequences may be evident beyond adolescence. Even though alcohol appears to be a stimulant, really it is a central nervous system depressant, depressing the brains inhibition control center (“too smart to start”). Neuron connectivity is vital to every human. Connectivity can be slowed down by alcohol consumption, which leads the person to think, speak, and move slower (“too smart to start”). Long term effects include memory loss and continuity of poor judgement. The cerebral cortex works with the senses; when the senses are debilitated, information is forgotten and senses do not function properly. The hippocampus regulates a person’s memories. When consuming too much alcohol, or even just one or two drinks, the hippocampus will damage, and a person will struggle remembering minor and large details. Teenagers often gloat over not being able to remember the night before. Even though their night may have been an “awesome blackout” their hippocampus has already been permanently damaged. The person now, can not hold on to knowledge and learn the same as before. The cerebellum controls coordination, thoughts and awareness (“too smart to start”). On most occasions, people have problems with these skills when consuming alcohol. In grade school, D.A.R.E. representatives brought “drunk goggles” to school. Studies show that alcoholism in the cerebellum
Excessive drinking can lead to teenage alcoholism. People who begin drinking at the age of 15 are four-times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who start drinking at the age of 21. Most teens take their first drinks at the age of 13. Alcoholism begins by first tasting, then social drinking, next abusive drinking, and last becoming a problem drinker or alcoholic. Most teenagers do not know why they drink but most do anyway. Peer pressure has a lot to do with teen drinking because sometimes it’s hard to say no when your around friends.
Alcohol affects the brain for a short-term– but repeated drinking may have an impact down the road, especially as a person’s brains grow and develop (NIDA, 2016). When a person is under the influence, he or she may feel their bodies having less aware of their surroundings. A person also may feel very relaxed and perform risky behavior, without even realizing. Long- term effects of alcoholism can cause a person to have trouble processing, learning, or a dependence on
Alcohol can really affect the growing and developmental process for teens. It can stop the brain from developing really hurting them for the future. It can also hinder the maturation of new brain constituents. This means that the connectors between the brain and nerve cells can stop developing and old ones can be torn apart (Spear). This can lead to a change in the brains thinking making teens more inclined to try risky behaviors. Also the prefrontal cortex is altered from drinking. This makes memory and rule
Alcohol is the most widely used drug among youth. It causes serious and potentially life-threatening problems for this population. Research indicates that drinking is associated with risk-taking and sensation-seeking behavior among adolescents. Alcohol has disinhibiting effects that may increase the likelihood of unsafe activities. In 1997, 21 percent of the young drivers 15 to 20 years old who were killed in crashes were intoxicated. For young drivers, alcohol involvement is higher among males than among females. In 1997, 25 percent of the young male drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking at the time of the crash, compared with 12 percent of the young female drivers
Alcohol has been severely damaging young individuals health both mentally and physically. Even though alcohol can be harmful at any age it is especially dangerous for teens as their brains are still developing and cannot cope with alcohol the same way as an adult can. When consumed
Teenagers are America’s greatest natural resource, and they need to be protected from some of the evils that lurk in the world. A subject that needs special attention is the abuse of alcohol by teens. Statistics show that there is a problem currently between teens and alcohol. There are many causes of teenage drinking and effects that prove that drinking is an important issue that needs to be dealt with to preserve American teenagers. Teenage drinking will become worse of a problem if it continues unchecked on its current path to destruction. Alcohol abuse among teenagers in the United States is a plague that is destroying the structure of American society.
