When it comes to the topic of violent media, some of us would readily agree it’s a controversial subject as to whether kids should or shouldn’t be exposed to it. This is because many children who view violent media react negatively rather than not being affected at all. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what effects does it have on children. Whereas some are convinced that it is a healthy alternative for kids to express themselves, others maintain that it causes kids to become more aggressive and contributes to juvenile crimes.

Violent media exposure of children or adults to violent media is a cause of aggression and violent behavior has been one of the most intensely debated issues in criminal justice and the broader populace. Concern have come and gone that media such as comic books, as well as television and movies, would lead to waves of rebelliousness, violence, and moral degradation. Sherry

I chose the television series American Horror Stories to do my analysis on breaking the norm in television. I chose this series because it breaks all of the norms due to its graphic content. The show is geared for a more mature audience and is rated TV-MA. Programs rated MA are unsuitable for children under seventeen.

In the media there is a great deal of violence and nobody can really deny that. However, the effects media has on children and young adults have been debated for years. In this paper I will be discussing the effects of media violence, the other factors, and the possible solutions to alleviate this global issue.

Many people still have several questions they want answered, such as, is media violence actually affecting children or are children already prone to violence drawn to media violence? Some experts have shown short and long-term negative effects occur in children from watching violent media; however another group of experts have shown that media violence is only one of many risk factors leading to aggression developed in children. These two groups need to continue more research and go beyond that to find true solutions. Nevertheless, no sources were found to say that media violence has no influence on the increase in modern culture’s violent actions. Children between the ages 7 to 12 are exposed to many television shows. These television shows, play an important role in children this age by opening their eyes to new ideas, cultures and to new places. As a 5th grade teacher, I was surprised to hear how many of my students were excited about the return of The Walking Dead on February 14, 2016. Before today, I had never seen this show, but I knew it was not appropriate for 10 and 11-year-olds to watch.

However in stark contrast to this idea of naivety that adults often create, there are television shows that almost ‘exploit’ a child’s innocence and sexuality- by making them compete in pageants wearing socially confronting and arguably sexualised outfits and make up that would be deemed as inappropriate for this age group by the same people that create these ideologies for children. It is a matter of great importance how much of media content children are exposed to and what exactly they are viewing on media. The issue of violence is not a new phenomenon among children and keeps increasing with time and change in technology and information technology. The causes of violence in children are seen to be multifactorial and exposure of children to media violence is said to be an important factor when it comes to the etiology of behaviors that are violent among children.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for regulating the content that a viewer can see on broadcast networks in the United States (Title 47). Content that is prohibited includes highly offensive swearwords and sexual material that is considered offensive by community standards. While the FCC can prevent such indecency and profanity from appearing on broadcast networks like ABC and NBC, it has no jurisdiction over basic cable channels, premium channels or streaming services. In recent years, premium channels like HBO and streaming services like Netflix have released shows with extremely graphic violence and sexual explicit content. This uninhibited content can be consumed by viewers of any age who pay for access to these channels or services. While most of these shows are aimed at an older audience, many younger viewers watch as well. Because these forms of media are becoming more popular in younger generations, it is important to know the effects that uninhibited content could have on younger viewers. Do shows with uninhibited content, like Game of Thrones, make viewers between the ages of 12 and 17 less likely to be disturbed or affected by real world violence?

Media violence is one of the most debated public issues society faces today. Television screens are loaded with the glamorization of weapon carrying. Violence constitute as amusing and trivialized. Needless portrayals of interpersonal violence spread across the television screens like wild fire. Televisions spew the disturbing events such as children being assaulted, husbands inflicting domestic abuse on their wives and children succumbing to abuse by their parents. Scenes of betrayal, anguish, infiltrate the television screen. Unfortunately, a child becomes subjected to media violence. The increasing amount of violence, foul language and sexuality available to children on TV is harmful to their development. What was once a time for children to watch TV with content suitable for their age is now directed for an older audience, Family Hour. Statistics show that this is the time most children are watching television with their family members. Despite knowing this, “Since 2000-2001, the amount of sexual content during the Family Hour has increased by 22.1%” (Parents Television Council 55). A poll done later in March of 2007 asked the general public if they thought there was too much sexual content on television. 79% of those that participated in the poll stated that there was too much.

* For teens, television is a major source of information about sex. A survey conducted in 1997 by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 61 per cent of young teens, ages 13-15, rated entertainment media as their top source of information on sexuality and sex health. This should concern parents because although two-thirds of TV shows contain sexual content, only one in ten includes any reference to safe sex or the consequences of unprotected sex.

Television is the mainstream of our culture. Violence on television has been a topic of conflict since before 1950. There have been repeated debates on how to protect children from the harmful effects of violence on television. Television is one form of modern media that influences the everyday lives of people. Televised violence has a major effect on how children perceive the world and how they behave. "American television has become the most violent in the world. It is for this reason why researchers have focused their attention toward television violence" (Cantor & Hoffner 424-4-25).           Due to violence on television, children become less sensitive to that pain and suffering of others or to become more aggressive to others. It also makes children more fearful to the world around them. (Abelard 1) Viewing habits of children observed for many decades deduced that violence on TV is associated with aggressive behavior, more than poverty, race, or parental behavior. It also reported that a TV show contains about 20 acts of violence an hour.

Television is a big part of today’s society. Everybody watches television, including the children. There is a potential problem with letting children watch television. Ask this question, would someone let their own child watch some of the programming that they watch, too? Some of these programs are intended for the adult generation, not young children. Violence has a major role in television these days. Letting children watch this violence could corrupt their minds and eventually lead to bad behavior. There needs to be a limitation on the types of television programming that parents let their children watch, because violence in television can negatively affect children.
