the United States there is an increased in racial and cultural diversity. Despite the increased, limited research exists that explores the role communication plays in the initiation of interracial relationships among dating, co-habiting, marrying, or interracial friendships and understanding the factors that influences communication behaviors. I would like a chance to explore the cultural differences between relationship partners in the area of intercultural communication in interpersonal relationships such as intercultural marriages, dating, family and friendship. Interracial relationship is referred as people involving, or co-existing between different races or ethnic groups. It is important to do a study on interpersonal communication among interracial dating or to determine the influence of interracial relationships on the grounds that by large, it is found in intercultural relationship or marriages are perceived negatively across cultural and ethnic groups through the eyes of prejudice and stereotyped through mass media and historical context from the past. …show more content…
I begin this study with a review of contemporary literature on the topics of interracial dating, diversity in schools and communities cross group friends, and individual’s perspective of attitudes and beliefs on interracial relationships. Next, I outline the methods used in this study and reveal its results: • Using questionnaire to measure individual’s comfort as a results those who grew up in a diverse community have a high comfort to be in an interracial relationship and reduces prejudices • Survey college students to find weather or not they are more accepted to be integrated and initiate an interracial
African Americans are the most judged group of individuals in the U.S. and around the world. Many American and non-American citizens see African American males as threating and thugs, while others view African American females as angry and ghetto. These stereotypes have led to Blacks being least likely to date outside of their race compared to other races. In this study we will discussing the reasons why White Americans would either object or not object to a member of their family bringing home an African American for dinner, we will also look at how education, gender, and region affect these decisions. In this study we will go into detail about why these attributes can cause different responses with White American. This research is important because there has been little to no research done on how whites really feel about family members dating outside their race and to test why White Americans would either except or object this notion. While White and Black Americans have come a long way in our hatred for each other we still have so far to go. Americans (White, Black, Hispanic, and other) are all entitled to our own opinions but these opinions should not be based off of racism.
Using the 2008 Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES), Whites’ attitudes towards dating, cohabiting with, marrying, and having children with African Americans and Asian Americans was studied. It was found that 29% of White respondents reject all kinds of relationships with African Americans and Asian Americans, while 31% endorse them. Second, Whites are less willing to marry and start a family within an interracial relationship than to date interracially. These attitudes and behaviors are related to political conservatism, age, gender, education, and region. Third, White women are likely to approve of interracial relationships for other people but not for themselves. White men however, express more willingness to engage in such relationships
While sitting in a small circle eating lunch, my friends and I somehow got onto the topic of dating. We all confessed who may or may not have our current attention and amongst my very diverse group of friends, one of them, a Hispanic, said she was interested in dating a white male. In response, another friend asked, “you like those white boys don’t you?”. It was a simple joke as all of my friends are open into interracial dating, but there are many people in American society who do not feel the same way. In fact, there are quite a lot of people who oppose interracial dating. This paper will discuss the topic of interracial dating amongst Whites (Caucasians), Blacks (anyone of African American descent), Asians (anyone of Asian descent),
Jack talked about how his parents think about interracial relationship. Conservative Asian parent would want their son to have a wife who spoke the same language, grew up in the same culture and pass along the family’s own tradition. From the survey response and interview response, both shown that family is the critical reason holding Asian men back from interracial
This study examines the association between media exposure of interracial relationships and attitudes toward interracial relationships. The hypothesis states people who reside in geographical and neighborhoods areas with little racial or ethnic diversity go through certain kind of behaviors attitudes toward interracial relationships that is highly influenced by mass media. As a result, researchers found that people from less diverse communities will later enter a diverse community for example, college, work, or moving into urban areas, find that individuals behaved through the stereotyped and how mass media portrays how to interact with people going through interracial relationships. It shows mass media portrays stereotyped interracial relationships over real life situation among interracial relationships, which changes the attitudes and behaviors of individuals who are unexposed to diversity, and relies heavily on mass media how to act around people from other cultures.
This article was written by Ritter (2015), who reported research on racial attitudes and group preferences of Asian international students, like Korean, Japanese, and Chinese toward dating other international students. The author surveyed 47 participants (23 Chinese, 13 Japanese, 8 Koreans, 2 Hong Kong students, and 1 Taiwanese student) studying at University of California at Los Angeles about the impacts of racial stereotypes on their perceptions of interracial dating.1 According to quite a few exigencies that the author declared in this investigation. Ritter (2015) mentioned that beyond the communication gap, the racial hierarchies emerge to affect the Asian international students when it came to dating. Put it another way, students were barely affected
While the main independent variables remained parallel across each of the three different questions, the measurements did not. For the first question, respondents were assessed with the prompt “You meet your new [Black/Arab] roommate.” Reactions were measured and recoded as 1 for those who claimed they felt very disgusted, and 5 for those who felt very affectionate. To measure second reactions, participants were asked to rate if they felt very hostile as 1, and very friendly as 5. For the first question, the control question received 37 responses; the African American question received 35 responses; and the Arab question received 34 responses. For the second assessment, the control and African American group had parallel responses; however, the Arab group had only 31 responses. To view the total numbers of responses refer to Table
Interracial couples as well as same sex couples face many of the same controversial problems and dilemmas, however, not many differences could be seen between the values of these couples regardless of their generations. The two different groups of individuals being interviewed were a selected group of interracial couples of an older age group ranging from 60 – 33, and a group of same sex couples the ages of 25 – 19. The relationship that was being studied was the relationship values between individuals in interracial relationships in previous generations versus the values of individuals in same sex relationships in our current generation. My hypothesis was that interracial couples as well as same sex couples face many of the same
This article first mention in most literature on attitudes toward interracial relationships has not been able to separate global and personal attitudes. In fact, much of the information about interracial dating, cohabitation and marriage is based on behavior. It is unknown about whether the gender differences in attitudes toward intermarriage might be explained by different attitudes towards global questions which are about the behavior of others and personal questions which explains about the respondent’s own behavior. The article then examines both of these types of questions, allowing a distinguish personal from global attitudes across dating, cohabiting, marital and childbearing relationships. In doing so, White men and women differ in
Additional conflict comes from cultural differences, communication, and lack of understanding. This study proposes that interracial marriages are not easily moved by the conflict which creates understanding and knowledge of their cultural differences which allows them to mesh better. There has to be a strong love connection and bonding in order to successfully and fully participate in the process of working past the change. Out of love these people married each other and out of love they have worked through communication and understanding to build a family defying the odds. All in all they love their spouses and cannot wait to continue the journey of
My research will be on the views of college students about interracial relationship. I have interview 20 college students at Prince George’s Community College from the age of 18 up to 36. To see the different views that a younger generation college students would have compare to an older generation college students. So I think there will be a significant difference in college students views on interracial relationships compared to views of older generation college students. Due to age, gender, experience and educational.
This source gave us useful information such as challenges faced by interracial couples. It relates to Kreager (2008) in how interracial couples show less affection. This article shows there is dissatisfaction of the interracial relationship when the couples face challenges
The union between Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, or any other group can be categorized as an interracial marriage. It does not matter what ethnic groups are involved: one prominent result of interracial marriages are the children that are born into these families. Interracial dating becomes a problem because people cannot seem to ignore race. Racial identity is constant, unavoidable, and has consequences that are very real. The color of one’s skin impacts how society will accept a person and also determines the advantages and disadvantages one will receive. Children begin to get stressed when there are conflicts that involve their dual ethnic identity. Children who are born to interracial families suffer the impact of negative consequences on their psychological well-being. This paper presents some background of the history of interracial marriages and some of the issues surrounding children of interracial marriages, and some of the negative aspects as they grow older.
The first topic that is going to be addressed is stereotypes and dating. I am more familiar with this topic then the other two topics because I was the once who did the research for our group presentation about this. I came across numerous articles that were very eye opening to me. The first article I will talk about is called, "Is Love Becoming Color Blind?". I really enjoyed reading through this article because it had personal examples from three different interracial couples. The first couple was Kristina Adamski and John Phillips, who were both in their early thirties. In the article it stated that being an interracial couple has been less of a challenge because the two communicate their feelings, and they have a large supportive
Furthermore, this study also explains that the larger the diversity level is at a campus setting, the greater the structural diversity is (2012). Therefore, the more diverse the school is, the greater chance that all ethnic communities will have the ability to form new interracial connections. From structural diversity, we can also examine the pattern or behaviors that influence or are promoted by interracial friendships. The influences of interracial connections are correlated to high positive diversity outcomes due to the patterns of racial tolerance and reduced
