For this assignment, I decided to conduct my interview with an individual who works for Malmbergets AIF (AIF = public sports club) in Malmberget, situated in the far north of Sweden. Established in 1904, the veteran club is and have been active within numerous sports, from soccer to cross country skiing, and throughout the club’s long history, one will find stories of great success, such as when its Olympic handball team played in the highest division in the mid-seventies, or one of the clubs cross-country skiers, Lina Andersson, won Olympic gold in 2006. Although, today, MAIF’s efforts are mainly focused on youth programs in various sports, with the ice-hockey team being the sole remaining adult team. Nonetheless, there are still some …show more content…
Given that MAIF operates within a number of different sports, Johansson describes that the best part is that his job changes with the seasons. During winter, he’ll get to focus on sports like ice hockey, and during summer, he can focus on their youth programs for soccer. Much like several other positions within the sport industry – at least in terms of working for a sports club –, what the job entails changes between seasons, but the difference for Johansson is that there’s never an off-season, which Johansson admits is challenging at times, but that he wouldn’t have it any other way, as he claims it “keeps [him] running”, despite his age.
Likewise, when asked whether or not the job truly is as rewarding, easy going, and appealing as he makes it seem, he paused, before giving a lengthy explanation regarding the effort required to do the job, saying that “it’s going to require hard work at times”, before adding that “that is the reality for most jobs”, but that he truly believes that his interest in what he does is what motivates him to push through it. He admits to have been lucky for – officially – entering the industry at a later stage in his career, and for a position higher up the chain, because he’s not sure his “passion for sports would have survived otherwise”, which I think might be the harsh truth a lot of individuals interested in a career within the industry might not get to hear. He quickly
In the article “Playing With Pain” by Michelle Crouch, published by Scholastic SCOPE, in December 2015 and January 2016, is about how when you specialize in one sport, you put a lot pressure on yourself to do well and be the best you can be, but some consequences can be life changing.
Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. Some of these skills include communication, teamwork, discipline, work ethic, dedication, leadership, and numerous more that will help them in their personal and work
From playing, to watching, to talking about them, sports have always been a passion of mine. Playing sports for as long as I can remember. From soccer to baseball, basketball to football. I´ve grown a deep passion for sports throughout my life. My passion has been so strong pursuing a career in this field just made good sense. I have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and my courses based upon on sports business, journalism fundamentals, technical writing and the function that multimedia plays in sports journalism. While I attended Michigan State University I broadcasted the school's radio
The path that lead me to choose Sport Management as a major began at a young age where I demonstrated my admiration for sports. I have been participating in sports my entire life and still do to this day. Unfortunately, my time as an athlete will eventually come to an end and I will need to find an occupation that I have passion for. I asked myself the question, “Why not continue my passion in sports”? Being able to work with sports, but not directly in the spotlight, as an athlete is something I would love to be apart of.
Divided into parts on “Opportunity” and “Legacy” the writings of Gladwell focus on shattering the myth that “success is exclusively a matter of merit” (67). As Gladwell exhibits, through the example of Hockey, the common belief is that “Success…is based on individual merit” (17). However, after a thoughtful analysis of precursory, and undeserved opportunities, such as, birth month, time spent practicing due to being selected because of age grouping, and “accumulative advantage[s],” all of the opportunities were critical to the success of the all-star hockey player; not just talent (30). Moreover, due to the arbitrary access to more practice, an individual (like the hockey player example) is allowed more of a chance to develop their skills.
It is not only about assembling people in a physically active way, it is about uniting an array of people whether disabled, healthy, or less fortunate into a larger community. I saw the effect of this idea of being part of a bigger community on those who participated in the Special Olympics as well as children at Wish Elementary School. Sport instills confidence as well as helps to develop the skills needed to cope with disappointment and defeat. This is what the industry provides and invokes in people without it even being consciously expressed. Growing up surrounded by this type of athletic, team-oriented atmosphere can instill an appreciation for and acknowledge the importance of sports as an individual and as a member of a greater
The article relates to sports because it refers to gender ideology because it identifies the “children as male and female” and the “roles of females and males in society” and this article describes how these children were treated according to status and gender (Coakley, 2015). This information coincides with information in our text. According to (Coakley 2015) organized youth sports children perceive them as a way “to enhance their status among their peers” robbing them of enjoying the sport because it is controlled by adults “that focus on the improvement which can
As a casual reader of the sports section of this newspaper, you come across many articles depicting the triumphs of local athletes. However, very rarely do these articles describe the actual athlete behind the success. Athletes come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. They range from the incredibly talented to the horribly uncoordinated. Some are great teammates while others would rather be a one man team. Certain athletes seek out attention from the people around them while others are modest and stay in the background. The fact of the matter is that there is a wide spectrum of different types of athletes that exist in this world and no two athletes are exactly the same. However, each can be put
I had the pleasure of interviewing Felicia Crump who is the Chief of Staff at Harlem RBI. Her upbeat and welcoming attitude made talking to her very easy. From growing up in central New Jersey to attending school in New York and then UConn, Crump has been able to open many doors in her professional career. Though she was not always interested in Sport Management, sport was always a big part of her life, as she was a starter for Hobart and William’s women’s soccer team in upstate New York. While playing collegiate soccer, Crump was studying art history and graduated in 2002. She spoke about how there wasn’t a huge demand for jobs in art history and there were even less when she graduated. While trying to look for jobs she landed a position at
He even recounted his own meetings with famous athletes as a high schooler, and the feeling of gratitude and motivation he felt upon hearing them talk. These interactions have made him want to continue the cycle – he is successful today partially because of the impact made upon him by his own idols, and he would like to be that idol to others now. In addition to his advice on hard work, Ware had a final piece of advice: “Don’t let perception kill your dream,” he said, adding that young athletes are often faced with cookie-cutter standards. “Use what you have to get to where you need to be,” he
Ottawa-Glandorf athletics taught me more than I ever thought I would have learned. Being apart of Titan sports comes with a stigma: a stigma to be great, to work hard, and to carry good sportsmanship. I participated in Ottawa-Glandorf sports so I could be apart of a team, enhance leadership skills, and build relationships with peers. My freshman year I decided to join the girls soccer team. I was a little hesitant as I was the only Glandorf girl on the team, but after the first week of practice, I met some of my best friends I have today. Although I didn’t get much playing time, I always tried my hardest, gave it my all, and was a leader on and off the field.
“I love sports, and not just the enjoyment you get in it, but also what you learn from it,” he said. “It’s so rewarding. You get so many feelings besides just the accomplishment and it teaches you so much.”
During her time at UConn she had internships with The Connecticut Sports Management Group and The Travelers Championship. The internship with Travelers championship left her worried about what working in sport might really be like. Her workday typically began at 4:15 AM and would not conclude until midnight. When reflecting on this experience Emily said that she was scared that is what working in sports would be like and that it was this internship that taught her what hard work really meant. Although she may have been deterred, just like in the game against Bloomfield she would not shy away from the challenge. Emily shared her experience with Dr. Burton who encouraged her that her internship at The Travelers Championship did not accurately portray what working in the sport industry would really be like and Emily kept motivated to graduate with a degree in Sport
