Into The Beautiful North FairyTale In the story Into The Beautiful North, there is an array of colorful characters and the story seems to have strong tones of magical realism. While analyzing the characters, many of them fit into the fairytale profiles. In the story, there is a heroine and a damsel in distress. A hero’s purpose in a book is to save the damsel in distress, which in this story, is the town Tres Camarones. This story is a modern fairy tale because the characters fall into classic fairy tale archetypes, but have their own modern day twist. In a fairy tale, there has to be a hero; someone who saves the day. The hero in the story is Nayeli because she is the one who has the idea of saving the town, and the one who executes it and ends up bringing the men home. Other characters in the story recognize her as the heroine as well. Irma says to Nayeli, “You did something I could never do. You came here on a mission… You had to be tested. The damsel isn’t a person that needs saving, but a town. The town of Tres Camarones is in need of a hero and is saved in the end; these are the qualities of the damsel in distress. In the first paragraph of the story, the town was shown in need of saving. “The bandidos came to the village at the worst possible time. Of course, everyone in Mexico would agree that there is no particularly good time for bad men to come to town. But Tres Camarones was unguarded on that late summer's day…” (Urrea 3). When Urrea says, “Tres Camarones was unguarded” he’s showing the town’s vulnerability to the impending doom that is coming. This town needs someone to save it; it is the damsel in distress. This story is a contemporary fairy tale because the characters can be classified as traditional fairy tale paradigms, but have an interesting change to them to make it
