All the movies we watched were about different people living in the wild during the winter. All of the stories were extremely different. Some of the people were prepared and had plenty of experience. Others were not as prepared and had a hard time living alone in the wild. The first video was about the Cree who have gone up to live in the wild every winter since they were children. The second was about a scientist who had never been in the wild and was dropped off in the middle of nowhere with all of his equipment. The third video was Into the Wild, it was about a man who wanted an adventure and went into Alaska with little preparation and died. The fourth video was of a man who had had plenty of experience living in the wild and was very …show more content…
They go into the wild because it is a tradition that their families have been doing for hundreds of years. Everyone during the movie was on the same page, no one complained or argued. Their culture respects nature, there are even certain customs to make sure it is not harmed. For example, they build their cabins out of nothing but what is found in the wilderness, so that it will decompose and not affect the surrounding area. They try not to hunt on their own land every year to let the animals breed and replenish their population. The families have no problems with society, they go back to their regular homes every summer, this is just one of their traditions. Once they are in the wild, the first thing they do is build a cabin that will be their home for the winter. Generally the women and men have specific jobs to do. For instance, the men gather the wood and build the base camp, they also hunt and collect fur from the large animals they kill. While the men are doing more of the physical work the women's jobs are correspondingly important. Women cut the firewood, and look for spruce leaves to lay on the floor, they relay the leaves every two weeks, women also keep the camp running smoothly, and are in charge of the food, and trapping small animals. Once the cabin is built the men go hunting, this takes up most of their winter and they are with the women for only ten days during their time in the wild. This way of life is extremely hard to maintain, but it has worked for their families for many years and they do not plan on letting the tradition to die anytime
Surviving in Alaska is no simple task. You are constantly putting your life in danger. Living of the and is no vacation. Christopher McCandless was not an exception to these facts. In the book Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, the protagonist Christopher McCandless dies due to his inexperience surviving in climates like Alaska. What happened to him could have been prevented. First of all, Chris would have had a better chance at survival if he was more prepared to live in Alaska. Secondly, Chris made many mistakes that led to his death that could have be less severe if he knew what to do. Finally, Chris was not the only one that made mistakes that cost them their lives.
Native American women had to follow their husbands, fathers, and brothers to wherever they wanted to go in order to stay close to the bison. Therefore, with all the moving around, they had teepees that could be put up for living and taken down for travelling. Women were in charge of both packing up and putting up these moveable homes. Once they had claimed their new home, women started working the fields. These fields were their responsibility. Their children were also theirs to care for while the men were out on long hunting journeys. On top of all that, Native American women made things to trade, such as jewelry, tools, and pottery.
With Native Americans being the first inhabitants of North America, many people often question what traditions they have created on their own, before the ideas of the pale settlers. When taking a look into their interesting beliefs, it is obvious to see an intricate basis or animals and spirits that guide the lifestyles of Indians all over the country. Even their society had a special way of doing things, including gender roles of both men and women. There are many customs that have seemed odd to the average American throughout the centuries, but Indians found these a normal way of life. Even the lifestyles of Native Americans were unique, from hunting animals to tanning buffalo hides. Gender was a major
Into the Wild is a book about a young man named Chris McCandless and his decision to go off and live in the wild. He decided to walk deep into the Alaskan wilderness and abandon all of his possessions and family. This book is the authors, Jon Krakauer, version of Chris McCandless’ story put together through interviewing and speaking with people who knew Chris as well as by using letters Chris wrote to his loved ones.
Shaun Callarman's argument for Jon Krakauer’s book Into the wild claims that Christopher MCcandless, born of a wealthy family convicted by society, had no common sense and he had no business going into Alaska. The definition of common sense according to merriam-webster.com is "the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions". I feel there is no true definition of acceptable or reasonable, if one were to choose to live life by following society, then I would think that would be reasonable, however, if one were to choose to live life following a desire out of their comfort zone I would also think that would be reasonable and no one should discourage his ideas.
The hunting, fishing, and trapping way of life is one of the main threads of continuity that has made the forest important to Cree life. How would they survive without there hunters? They wouldn’t, no food for the children or even clothing for their bodies couldn’t be possible without the job of the
Into the Wild a book written by Jon Krakauer is about a young man by the name of Chris McCandless who abandons his family and all he had to trek the country to find why he was put in the life he’s in. His venturous journey ended in alaska because he didn’t know how to survive the wilderness and past away in a bus that was abandoned in the middle of the wild in alaska. In The beginning of the movie i realized that he probably wouldn’t have survived in the first place because he didn’t have no knowledge of what he was really doing. If christopher had experience of going into the wild he probably would have done better.
In Jon Krakauer’s, Into The Wild, Chris’ discomfort with the world was due to him being born this way, making his case a nature rather than a nuture.
In Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, Chris McCandless undertakes a multi-year journey throughout the midwest, southwest, and Alaska before meeting his fate in Alaska. Krakauer uses his book to argue that Chris is a hero for going out and doing what he dreamt of doing. Krakauer’s argument is right because Chris had goals for his trip and reasons for embarking on the trip.
In our summer reading book, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the main character was Christopher Johnson McCandless. In the opinion of many people, McCandless had a kind of weird mindset. That is said because he had the crazy thought to do something near impossible, which was hitchhike across the country, which makes readers believe that Chris is a very hard worker no matter what he is doing. With saying that McCandless is a very hard worker, he is also very arrogant in some ways. McCandless has a the mindset that he will do anything and everything he is asked or that he wants to do, but in some ways it would probably be for the better if Chris would listen to some of the people he met along the way.
From the instant readers look at the front cover of Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, they place their judging eyes upon Christopher. From a quick glance at the book they find out that Christopher gave away 25,000 dollars to charity, abandoned all his worldly possessions except for some books, burned all his money he had with him (front cover). Then a few months later he enters the Alaskan bush and his dead body is found. This fact leads them to the conclusion, without even opening the book, that Christopher was an idiotic, rash, unprepared person. As a reader of the book I made these same judgments toward chis without even attempting to understand his actions.
Into the Wild Madison Garvin Youth are famous for their rebellious and foolish acts of driving too fast or drinking too much, but occasional adolescents, such as Chris McCandless, take this risk-taking to a deeper and more logical extreme. In the novel Into the Wild, Krakauer uses McCandless’s journal, his friends and family and even his own personal experiences to analyze McCandless’s adventures into the uninhabited. He not only explores McCandless’s trials, expeditions, and ultimate death but examines the reasons why a privileged youth would leave everything that he has behind and take on a challenge like living alone in the wilderness.
In the book into the wild Chris McCandless is trying to escape reality, and be free. You can never put a price on freedom especially Chris’. In Chris’ attempt to escape reality he finds himself all over again. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for a while.
Into the Wild is a modern day exploration of liberty found by eschewing custom and flinging oneself into the literal wilderness. Exploring Christopher McCandless' true story, the film couches McCandless' search for freedom in noble terms, quoting Lord Byron, for example. In addition, both John Stuart Mill and Anne Norton would appear to agree with McCandless' adventure, though there is also the cautionary possibility that McCandless was troubled and selfish rather than noble. John Stuart Mill and Anne Norton both argue for throwing off custom in order to find greater personal freedom. In that respect, McCandless certainly was a man after their own hearts. Unfortunately, it could also be forcefully argued that McCandless was utterly ignorant and lacked respect for the wilderness, for others who knew how to live in the wilderness, and for the family that he put through hell. Even 10-year-old girl scouts know that you should always be prepared but McCandless, a grown, intelligent man, did not bother to prepare himself. Consequently, McCandless could be viewed as a noble adventurer or as a fool.
Christopher Johnson McCandless walked alone into the Alaskan wilderness with very little equipment and food after traveling to various parts of North America during the course of two years. Regardless of living on his own with not many things for a couple of years, Chris died alone in a bus on the Stampede Trail in Alaska. Author Jon Krakauer wrote a 9,000 word article titled “Death of an Innocent” for the 1993 issue of the magazine Outside. Into the Wild is simply an extension of that article which explains what provoked Chris into living such a life, who he was, and how he died. The author proves to the reader that Chris was an intelligent man by explaining his research about edible plants and his ambition which builds up Chris’s
