A criminal investigation is a question and collection of items or knowledge, that then helps you reach a conclusion and find the answer you were looking for. A criminal investigation has three elements: the process, crime related information, and goals (Brandl, 2014).
The first element is the process, which is where the criminal investigation begins. This is where police officers and detectives perform certain activities in a specific order, which can vary in intensity depending on the nature of the crime.
The second element is crime-related information, which is composed of evidence. This could be anything ranging from knowledge of the crime, items found at the crime scene, blood or fingerprints, as well as statements from …show more content…

The last element of a criminal investigation is the goal, which is where do you want this investigation to end up? There are various goals that you can work towards including: solving the crime, providing evidence to support a conviction in court and to provide a level of service to satisfy crime victims. (Brandl, 2014). Each component is important to a criminal investigation, with solving the crime being the best outcome for a bad situation.
Out of the three goals that investigators can work towards, first is solving the crime. This first step needs to be making sure that a crime has been committed. By interviewing the victim and bystanders, investigators can conclude if this is a real crime or a false report.
The next goal of providing evidence in a court case, is just as important as solving the crime to start with. This evidence needs to be collected and processed properly to be admissible in court. Whatever evidence needs to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that this person, now referred to as the defendant, is guilty. Not having the right evidence or not enough evidence could cause a jury to believe the defendant is not guilty, which could lead the defendant to be set free to commit additional crimes.
The last goal of providing a service to the victim, is especially important to local law enforcement. Police officers should want to victim to be satisfied with the service they received, during the criminal investigation. Community satisfaction is a
