Driven by the bleak living of Southern America, the genre of Blues along with black African Americans migrated north towards the cities city during the time of the great migration. The Harlem Renaissance we know identify it, influenced by black Americans revolutionised popular music of the era and within a small period of time two genres of Jazz and Blues moulded their significance in American identity. The Blues were originally developed by black African slaves who sang away their ‘blues’ as a survival strategy to face the brutal conditions in which they were forced to live in America. Intrigued by the genre, Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man manipulates Blues and presents it in a literary format to create a political statement. Ellison
African American influence in music has been an ever present and controversial subject in American history. Stemming from many different cultures, religions and backgrounds, large portions of American music was introduced by, and credited to African Americans. Although in many cases, this music was used for entertainment by the masses or majority, contrary to popular belief, black music served a greater purpose than just recreation. Dating all the way back to the beginning of slavery in the U.S. during the 17th century, music has been used to make a statement and send a message. As African American music progressed over the years, there were common themes expressed as the genres evolved. It has been an open letter to the world, documenting and protesting the ongoing oppression faced by blacks in the United States, as well as an outlet for frustration. For many African Americans, the music gave them the only voice that couldn’t be silenced by their oppressors.
This paper will illustrate how the Harlem Renaissance assisted the African-American intellectual community to gain acceptance in mainstream America and prompted the writing of the book The Invisible Man, written by Ralph Ellison. Throughout this paper, I will examine the social context and climate of Ellison’s work. This paper will focus on the experience of a young African American man who claims to be invisible. However, the young man argues that his invisibility is not due to his wish but arises from society’s failure to notice him. This young man who is also educated captures his frustrations and struggles in order to survive in a predominantly racist society. Additionally, this paper will illustrate how the Harlem Renaissance afforded African-American artists like Ellison to provide an extraordinary opportunity for the African- American community to recall their experiences in a not so embracing America where deeply entrenched racism had been woven into the fabric of American society (Callahan, 2004).

The Harlem Renaissance was a time of revival and awakening in which the African American community produced a new form of cultural identity. After years of oppression and slavery, African Americans struggled to discover their own distinctive culture. It was through the literature and artistry of the Harlem Renaissance that the African American community began to express the suffering and resentment they truly experienced. In addition, the movement allowed them to find a way to escape their hardships. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” and Langston Hughes’ “The Weary Blues” address the addiction, poverty, and violence that surrounded African Americans and the triumph of life that was captured in their attempt to escape the suffering.

The trope used by the two poets within “The Harlem Dancer” and “The Weary Blues” is that of a performance and a single speaker’s recollection of it. No black person can escape the blues, because the blues are an inherent part of the black existence in America. To be black is to be blue. The blues tell us about black people’s attempt to carve out a significant existence in a very trying situation. The purpose of the blues is to give structure to black existence in a context where color means rejection and humiliation. Suffering and its relation to blackness is inseparable from the meaning of the blues. Without pain and suffering, and what that meant for black people in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas, there would have been no blues.
