Even with a healthy, balanced diet and adequate iodine intake, there are some foods that can lessen the absorption of iodine. Before we start the section off, let’s have a little review. Here is a short list of foods that are rich in iodine:

Because the human body is a balanced system, for everything you consume, there is one thing that will lessen its health benefits. In this section, we’ll have a look at the foods that may inhibit the body from getting the iodine it needs. There are many reasons why these foods prevent your body from getting the amounts of iodine you need. I’m not telling anyone not to eat any of the foods in this section—many of them have great nutritional value. Through a balanced diet, your body can prevent cancer and help treat or even fight off other medical conditions, and you’ll have more energy and overall health.

Here are some of the foods I would completely cross off your grocery list and cut out of your diet. These foods will be discussed later in the book or have been already.

Gluten: For many people, gluten wouldn’t come to mind when we talk about foods with goitrogens, but gluten is not only linked to celiac disease. Gluten sensitivity has been found to go hand-in-hand with autoimmune disorders, a very aggressive form of allergy, such as type 1 diabetes, Addison’s disease, Sjögren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune thyroid disease. Many doctors would tell their patients to consider excluding gluten from their diets, especially if they already have an autoimmune disorder.

Soy: Soy is a food that contains isoflavones (estrogen mimickers) and it also contains goitrogenic compounds. These compounds, just like thyroid hormones, accept iodine molecules from the thyroid peroxidase (TPO).
