Change spawns from revolution, and revolution spawns from a revolutionary. Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, known in the Western hemisphere as Ayatollah Khomeini, fit the aforementioned role. Aspiring to achieve revolution in Iran by overthrowing the Persian monarchy and forming an Islamic republic, he was later known as one of Iran’s most famous and controversial religious leaders, as well as one of the highest ranking political officials. However, he did not own such power and influence from the beginning of time, as there were more powerful figures that ruled before him. One of the last of these rulers, the Shah of Iran, was out to capture and execute Ayatollah after rioting took place under his newfound revolutionary philosophies.

The Shah came to power during World War II, when a Soviet invasion forced his father, Reza Shah Pahlavi, out of power. However, during his early years, the man with the real power in Iran was Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh nationalised the Iranian oil industries, which was extremely harmful to the global economy and various countries. Thus, the United States and United Kingdom instituted a coup d'etat that dethroned Mosaddegh. It was through this coup d’etat that Mohammad Reza truly gained power and control in Iran, as he was essentially a puppet for the western world’s wishes. Additionally, during Mohammad Reza’s reign, Iran hit its anniversary of 2,500 years of Persian-run monarchy since Cyrus the Great. All revolutions need revolutionaries, because unified revolution can be best organized with the agenda of a single person. Thus, the Iranian Revolution was only possible with the emergence of Ruhollah Khomeini, the revolutionary who would forever change Iran’s future. Khomeini’s critical importance to leading the revolution started when he was just six months old, as his father was murdered in 1903.
