In the article, I chose from The Economist called “Is college worth it?” It mainly talks about how college can be “worth it” only if taken seriously by going into a major that will pay the bills and is worth paying thousands of dollars for that career path or going into a field of a very high paying career. The main career paths that the article talks about as “not worth it” are art and language majors. The purpose of the article is to guide high school/ college students and parents about college and how they should choose appropriate career paths that will help in the future. The career path chosen, should benefit the student not hurt them. This article mainly targets current college students who are still undecided or students who are already in a major, and it tries to convince those students to make sure they chose the “correct” career path. There are other options for people like skilled trades. According to the article, “Too many degrees are a waste of money. The return on higher education would be much better if college were cheaper” (Par 1). The cultural value is hard subjects pay off. In the article, it points out two different perspectives of degrees and; an engineering degree and an arts and humanities degree. Engineering is “Unsurprisingly, engineering is a good bet wherever you study it” (Par 6). While arts and humanities degrees “all doubtless nourish the soul, but not all fatten the wallet” (Par 7). The cultural norm is with a college degree makes a person successful. Which in, and the article says that “American schoolkids pondering whether to take on huge student loans are constantly told that college is the gateway to the middle class” (Par 3).
