Heroes are persons whose behaviors meet leader’s expectations, and they become good examples for other team members. Wenzhou-Kean University pays great attention on students’ honesty. Students are warned that they cannot plagiarize in their assignments or cheat in the exams. Snow, a senior student, became a hero in this area in WKU. At that time, students were taking exams in class period, and the questions for different sections are similar. Some students in early class finished the exam and told exam questions to others who would take the exam later. Snow found this problem and exposed it to her instructor and university administrator. The university sent emails to all students to warn cheated students and praised Snow’s behavior of honesty.
Multiple studies have found that students are spending less time on their academic studies leading to a decrease in education and an increase in temptation of academic dishonesty. Cheating has been prevalent since mankind existed, but writer William Chace gives his outlook on the issue in his article, “A Question of Honor”. Chace is able to use adequate reasoning to engage the reader in an article that depicts perspectives from every angle. Included within the article are a sense of sympathy, through explanations and even a proposed solution of how to end academic dishonesty.
Academic honesty, expected of every student, is essential to the process of education and to upholding high ethical standards. Cheating, including plagiarism, inappropriate use of technology, or any other kind of unethical or dishonest behavior, may subject the student to severe academic penalties, including dismissal. All work submitted for evaluation in a course, including tests, term papers, and computer programs, must represent only the work of the student unless indicated otherwise. This includes homework, essays, theses, and creative projects.Material taken from the work of others must be acknowledged. Materials submitted to fulfill requirements in one course may not be submitted in another course without prior approval of the instructor.
The student becomes a sort of “accessory,” or “accomplice of crime”. That notion is not a solution to solving the problem of cheating, instead, it instills guilt, and consequently stress, into students who could have seen something they may not have wanted to see. Students should not be the police; it is not their responsibility. Although, it is there responsibility to discourage cheating. If a student wants to inform a superior about cheating, that should be the student’s choice, and should be based the student’s own conviction, not because they do not want to be
If a college campus harbors an environent where cheating is seen as acceptable and an activity many people participate in, even students with correct morals and no desire to cheat themselves are less likely to report fellow students for unsavory behavior. This can also go a step further and that same student who failed to confront a peer for cheating, may give in to the school’s atmosphere and start cheating themselves. This makes them all the less likely to report other students for fear of appearing hypocritical and/or being reported themselves. A study on honor code effectiveness was completed by Sally Sledge and Pam Pringle at a small public university (Source E). Their results showed that only 8% of students would report a fellow student for cheating. Even more surprisingly, 40% of students anonymously stated that they had “violated the honor code and not been caught”. This points to a very cheater-friendly attitude at this particular school and shows that the honor system is not very effective in this
A solution has been proposed to raise values of honesty and integrity within a student body. The solution is the establishment of “Honor Codes”. It is said in Source that the success of the honor codes depend on the student body. Cheaters will encourage cheaters or honesty will win. I deeply believe that schools should establish the honor codes because they will set up an educational environment with better student-teacher relationships,
In recent years, many schools and institutions have introduced an “honor code”. The idea behind an honor code is that, if a student is caught cheating or in violation of the honor code, then there are serious consequences. Also, in some institutions, if a student catches another student violating the honor code, then the students must turn in the violator. While in theory this sounds like a good plan, many cases have shown that this code does not work in a practical application. Even with the introduction of the honor code, many schools have found that students continue to cheat, and students refuse to turn in their peers.
Chace, W. M. (2012). A Question of Honor: Cheating on campus undermines the reputation of our universities and the value of their degrees. Now is the time for students themselves to stop it. (Cover story). American Scholar, 81(2), 20-32.
Sometimes, school is competitive. It can become so competitive that students will lie or go so far as to cheat. Some will even kill. Honor Students at Driftwood City High School partake in an Honors English Literature class that ends the year with an exam. The three students who score highest on this test receive a Distinguished Writers Foundation scholarship. This is both a great honor as well as a way to get into the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities. As this is such a serious event, cheating consequences are severe. The first offence results in a failing grade regarding that assignment. Also, the student in question receives a one day suspension from school. If the student decides to cheat a second time, the consequence
The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson has been told for almost two-hundred years. It is the story of a little girl and a little boy who are best friends that do everything together. One day, the little boy goes missing and the little girl must journey to find him and bring him home. The little girl, Gerda, shows bravery, selflessness, and relentlessness throughout the tale. Through these she shows heroism, which helps her through the journey to find the little boy, Kay. These values reveal Gerda's cultural background, and what her family expects of her. In each transformation of the text, "The Hero's Journey" is evident throughout. In the movies The Snow Queen and Disney's Frozen, viewers can detect the "The Hero's Journey" throughout.
What is a hero? According to Dictonary.com, a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Today, when most people use the term hero, they are using it to refer to someone with courage or honesty. There are several different examples in society that people have been labeled as a hero. Many see Martin Luther King as a hero for what he did for the African American community, Chris Kyle because of his heroic actions and bravery in combat and Neil Armstrong for his dedication to our great nation. For me, a hero is someone who is willing to do the right thing without regards to the consequences. Everyone listed above risked their lives for something bigger than themselves. That's exactly what I observed in the story Bodega Dreams. The story is about a teacher who treats his students with disrespect and with no cares of how their lives end up. Mr. Blessington is considered the villain in this story. He is the English teacher who tells his students that the boys will end up in jail and that all the girls were going to end up hooking. According to my standards this individual has no business in the school district. The hero of the story belongs to Mr. Tapia, the Science teacher at Julia de Burgos Junior High. This teacher stood up for his students. He cared for them in a way that no other teacher there did. That is why I chose him as the hero. He stood for something without regards to the consequences. He
Avalanche races down the mountain tackling anything in its path. He doesn't care what it is that's in his way. All that he cares about is if it is in his way or not. As soon as Avalanche reaches his victim he drags him down under the icy cold snow and puts him in his hands as they both ride down the mountain. Avalanche just doesn't race down the mountain at any time. He waits for somebody to wake him up by disturbing him. Then that is when he races down the mountain. Very rarely does anybody make it out of the avalanche's grasp. So when and if they do they become a hero. Avalanche survivors remember vividly how it is to be sucked down by an avalanche. They describe it by saying, the Avalanche dragged me under and wouldn't let me go so I knew
In The Snow Child, by Eowyn Ivey, an Alaskan setting in the 1920’s contributes to the atmosphere of isolation, harsh conditions, and quiet.
There has always been someone who is different, distinguished either from the ordinary people or a group of prominent figures. When that difference has a huge and positive impact on us, we considered him as a hero. The tv series games of thrones is particularly popular today. Jon snow, grown in the noble family of Stark, who’s been trained by the warriors and knights from a child, is a protagonist in the story. Though he is an illegitimate son of Lord Ned Stark, the lord treated him well, which make him practice even harder. Still, Jon felt himself as an outsider and are limited in status due to the resentment of Ned’s wife. So he chose to joined the Night’s Watch-a group of soldiers who vowed to give up any worldly relationships in order to protect the wall from the wildlings and the white walkers of the north. The character Jon Snow demonstrates sophisticated fighting skills, loyalty from friends and unshakable faiths as the plot carries out.
When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.
The principle of academic integrity stretches beyond the limits of a classroom. Good students are honest with themselves, their professors, their roommates, and their community.
