“Is the American Dream Still Alive and Well?” (Debate)

The American Dream is the result of possibilities and success. The term “American Dream” was been invented by James Truslow Adams in 1931: “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement.” Another reference to the American Dream appears in the Declaration of Independence (1776). The author wrote that people are “endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” The question of the debate was: “Is the American Dream Still Alive and Well?” The party arguing that the American Dream is still …show more content…

I am not saying that French people do not want to succeed, but it is in the culture to be less opened with our ambitions. I would say that this is reflected for example in the various speeches I have heard here, especially as an athlete. The speaker would point out how great you are, how you can succeed if you do what it takes. I believe that this mentally shows that a part of the American Dream is still alive, since it will give people hope and courage for their projects. Although not everyone will succeed, it is probably this mentality that is undoubtedly a key for success. Compared to the French culture, I think that people may have this mentality but they hide their ambitions, or at least do not express them as openly as in American culture. As a consequence, the path to success is less emphasized. I believe that this is one of the differences between the USA and other developed countries that may also propose a lot of possibilities to succeed. In my opinion (use “according to” if you are referring to someone else besides yourself, like an author) , the presence of this mentality makes the American Dream partly alive. During the time period covered by the Humanities 214 program (4th century to 17th century), the United States did not exist yet. The United States Constitution goes back to 1787.
