Developing mental illness and traumas in the brain can in some cases lead to changes in personality and trigger symptoms of illness, drug or alcohol abuse can contribute as well. Isolation can assist in a person’s mental well-being, for example mental instability and hallucinations also brings out fear, anger, anxiety and sadness. The four films I have chosen are psychological thrillers which all deal with some form of isolation and all feature mental illness. The films are Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese (2010), The Others by Alejandro Amenabar (2001), Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky (2010) and Secret Window by David Koepp (2004). In today’s society mental illness has become far more common than in the past when they had no idea how to deal with it. Mental illness leads to people causing harm to themselves or others leaving their humanity trapped deep inside.
Being isolated leads people to be mentally unstable and come up with outrageous conclusions making them believe they need to create another reality. In Shutter Island and Black Swan isolation heightened the main characters need for a better life. Andrew Laeddis needed his relationship with his wife so much he chose to ignore her attempts of suicide “After she tried to kill herself the first time, Dolores told me she... she had an insect living inside her brain. She could feel it clicking across her skull, just... pulling the wires, just for fun. She told me that. She told me that but I didn't listen. I loved her so much.” this was said when Andrew finally accepted reality of the trauma he has experienced. In Black Swan however Nina’s mother refused to let go therefore isolating Nina from experiencing important aspects of life, Nina’s mother Erica stop her from growing up by not allowing her to choose what her room looks like, Nina was in her mid-twenties and her room was pink with several stuffed toys and dolls, in the centre of the room a small single sized bed with pink covers, looks as though a six year old lived there. Nina’s room reflected Nina’s mind set, she was physically isolated because her mind wasn’t the mind of a dancer in her twenties she was treated like she was twelve and she knew it, “It's called privacy, I'm not 12 anymore!” Nina
