Israel declared sovereignty as a state on May 14 1948. Two things happened that day that continue to shape this young nation of an ancient people. Being a previous British Colony, the British Army withdrew early in the day and within hours the fighting between the Arab and Jewish people had begun that continues to this day. Secondly, by the end of the night an announcement made by the United States meant that we had officially recognized the nation of Israel and her government beginning of our two countries great relationship. The United States has a long history of supporting the Israeli nation in both word and deed. Starting with President Wilson declaring support for the Balfour Declaration on March 3 1919 when he stated “The allied nations with the fullest concurrence of our government and people are agreed that in Palestine shall be laid the foundations of a Jewish Commonwealth.”.(Levine, J, 2016) The Balfour declaration was the beginning of returning Palestine, the traditional homeland of the Jews, back to the Jewish Nation. Found in both countries declarations of independence are values of truth, freedom, equality and justice for all humanity attributing to our strong and continued relationship over the years. This disallowed the Israeli military to spend on development. Israel was one of the first nations through our proliferation to acquire the PATRIOT missile system to and continue to support them through the application of our own units in the region to this day. The United States has spent nearly 3.3 billion in support of the Israeli development of several new missile systems to create a four-tier system to include the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow 2 and Arrow 3.
