Issues and ideas of Polygamy by Aisha B. Lemu
In the essay of "Defense of Polygamy" by the british, feminist, activist and writer Aisha B. Lemu, explains why polygamy could be a great solution for many women without partners or for many women with partners but with difficulties in their relations. She explain why because of the large numbers of men dying in war, and others violent confrontation groups, a huge group of widows, fiancés, and women in general, have left alone without any protection for themselves or their children. The quantities in general of men in these days are low and have left a large group of women alone with no or difficult chances to get married or have a partner.
Therefore, she states that most of women

What will happen then in the future or into a few more years where the disorder of sexes will may be so dramatic that for every man twelve women will be shared? Then what? Polygamy will maybe not be a truth solution and then maybe we will have to attack the true problems of violence and deaths of men. Another point that the author exposed is the circumstances where the wives are sick and the husbands can 't manage it or where "wives are unable to have children while the husband very much wants them". This argument represents a more logical thought, although not entirely correct in my opinion and own personal believes. I just can 't still understand why it is necessary to go get another partner just for the benefit of a baby, when you could solve it "renting a belly" without resorting to commitments with other woman. But even if it happens or not, I think that the choices of a couple are personal choices and if the wife agrees then is her own personal choice. The other point that exposes is the cases where a marriage has not been very successful and the husband loves another woman. The author also express some things about when a husband need to divorce from the first wife to be with the second wife, but the first wife doesn 't want to be divorce for the "secure of the marriage, for herself and their children". Before starting to explain anything else I do think is quite understandable the worry that a wife could have for the economical and physical securities
For men, they help each other with bringing food and money home. As said “Polygyny is not so much about sex as it is about hoarding the productive and reproductive labor” (2006, p. 3). It is about decreasing the jurisdiction of a man or woman. The possible negative outcomes I see in polygamy is the possibilities of men and women feeling the need to be in competition of being the favorite wife or husband, and the fact of sharing partners. As stated in the videos and the article about polygamy, I agree with the benefits of polygamy as the positive outcomes. Having more than one wife or husband reduces the work or obligations needed to be provided at home. Though they are many positive factors of polygamy, I personally do not agree with the term. If I were married, I would not like to share my
Marriage is a social institution that is practiced globally. Traditionally marriages are known to occur between one man and one woman. However, cultural values and time have reshaped and birthed new types of marriages. Polygamy is a type of marriage that is often practiced around the world specifically in Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Polyamorous marriages have been in existence for centuries. Polygamy is classified into two categories, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygyny is the most popular type of polygamy, in this type of polygamous marriage, a man is married to multiple women. On the other hand, polyandry which is the least familiar type of polygamy is where a woman is married to multiple husbands. The intolerance of Mormons in the United States has led to the outlawing of polyamorous marriages. The Morrill Anti Bigamy law of 1862 outlawed the practice of polygamy in the United States. Like many other laws, this law can be overturned. In fact, it should be reversed because illegalizing polygamy is unethical. Polygamy should be legalized because it is unconstitutional for it to be illegal, same-sex marriages and interracial marriages are legal, therefore so should polyamorous marriages. In addition, legalizing polygamy would prevent immigrant families who practice polygamy from being separated and it would also strengthen the feminist movement.
In Dena Hassouneh-Phillips’ article, “Polygamy and Wife Abuse: A Qualitative Study of Muslim Women in America,” she notes a report from a second wife who felt insignificant in her polygamous marriage due to the lack of attention
In this age of freedom and personal choice, where previously banned and frowned up lifestyles are accepted, polygamy should become a lifestyle choice. This is the opinion of people who live this lifestyle. “Loving them is simple. It’s one of those things you do unconsciously…and your way of being that you never question it.”(Brown 27). The sister wives must have respect for the people
Women’s roles are difficult and unequal to men. They are the building stones of a family. Society expects far too much from a wife and offers little. The main purpose of this essay is to highlight the selfish point of view of husbands and their traditional expectations out of wives, and inequality suffered by women. Judy Brady being in the category of wives suddenly thought why she wants to have a wife. The whole essay depicts women as slave rather than human being. There are several reason which shows husband traditional expectations for wives and inequality suffered by women; economically dependent on husband, alone take care of her family, taking care of husband’s desire.
In spite of the biological tendency to favor one mate at a time, marriage systems, however, have changed into many different forms, like polygamy (one husband and many wives), polyandry (one wife and many husbands), patriarchy (male rule),or matriarchy (female rule). These changes have largely happened for economic reasons. In other words, historically, marriage systems have reflected economic factors of the time. Thus, marriage encompasses an endless variety of combinations joined by a legal contract heavily influenced by economics. Clearly, economics is more powerful than biology.
In the 4 selected documents, women’s view of marriage is clearly conflicting. Women can have a positive view of traditional marriage as it can bring security, comfort, status and many other advantages. However it also has setbacks. These setbacks have strenghed over the last few years. In the mondern day world there is a 50% divorce rate, a clear indicator of the diminshment, and the subversion of
Being married to one or more women has been very popular in the past. Many countries give the permission to marry one or more women including Morocco. The idea behind this habits is to boost the chance of having boys to carry the name of the father over the time. In fact, the idea of marrying more than one person is not only limited to man but also for women . Women can also marry several man at the same time and we call this Polyandry. Polyandry is very rare comparing to polygamy simply because by definition polyandry exists only in two part in the world. On the other hand, Polygamy was the only solution to protect the human kind from from extinction and garantee the continuity
The term “polyamory,” to some, is a confusing word describing a lifestyle found to be even more baffling. However, polyamorous relationships are growing in popularity and have roots dating back hundreds of years. Polyamory is described as the “assumption that it is possible, valid, and worthwhile to maintain intimate sexual and/or loving relationships with more than one person simultaneously, without deception or betrayal” (Morrison, Beaulieu, Brockman, & Beaglaoich, 2013). Polyamorous relationships are a subsect of nonmonogamous relationships that place focus on functionality, happiness, exploration, and love for all involved. Polyamory is not to be confused with terms such as polygyny (multiple wives), polyandry (multiple husbands), or polygamy
While strangers to the practice believe that people join plural relationships involuntarily, this is not always the case. Julen, a polygamist living in Arizona, speaks about how she made the decision to join her untraditional affinity and could also choose to leave the relationship if she ever becomes unhappy (Ling, 7). Polygamy can benefit our society in many ways including increasing the population and boosting large families’ economic status. Not only does this form of untraditional marriage serve the public, but in personal ways as well. Those who are a part of a blended family are blessed with an abundance of love and support coming from a bonded group of people. Likewise, the act of adultery is terminated: “..all spouses will have consent, then there is no extra-marital to hide from your partner” (Connectusfundadmin, 11). And lastly, polygamy gives freedom of choice in our Land of the Free. While there many are reasons to be on the opposition of this topic, the supporters of polygamy do have untold
Beyond the general need of a woman to initially secure a faithful husband is to ensure that he remains so. Sexual promiscuity on behalf of females (much more than males) drastically undermines the security of marriages already in existence. As George Gilder observed: “This is what sexual liberation chiefly accomplishes-it liberates young women to pursue married men.” And so long as society approves of divorce and there is no stigma attached to it as there once was, the security of marriages will continue to be drastically compromised by sexual
In most cases of polygamy, the man has multiple wives. A man having multiple wives decreases the chance of other heterosexual males finding a female partner. This may result in something that is already occurring in China due to the imbalance of males to females. There are instances of women being kidnapped, trafficked, and raped because some men are not able to find a partner. If polygamy becomes a common occurrence in Canada, it is likely that this will be the outcome of it. However, an imbalance of the ratio of single males and females is not the only problem with polygamy. Using the Winston
Polygamous relationships can on some occasions be beneficial towards the woman as they are most likely to be mated with a wealthy older man. Financially this is beneficial for the women because she is able to share the wealth along with several other wives that the wealthy male has. Their children are also ensured a safe future as their father has a well amount of money to spend on them.
As of 2015, thirty-seven U.S. states have legalize same-sex marriage, and with arguments in a landmark case currently being presented in the Supreme Court this month; there is little doubt that the modern definition of legal marriage will soon be forever changed in The United States. While same-sex marriage is still the center of fierce debate and opposition from primarily religious conservatives, public opinion reflects a more tolerant social consensus. Despite this relatively recent legal trend of marriage law reform, same-sex relationships are obviously nothing new. Like same-sex relationships, polygamous relationships have also existed in the U.S. regardless of state recognition. Curiously, unlike same-sex marriage, virtually no significant progress has been made for legal recognition of polyamorous unions. One could argue that “poly-progress” is more than just stagnant, but moving in a negative direction considering Supreme Court rulings consistently upholding polygamy bans. Mainstream representation of polygamy, or debate and discussion on its merits seem virtually non-existent, save the occasional voyeurism of reality television shows or liberalism of “think-pieces” buried deep within online newspapers archives. Monogamy commands such extreme reinforcement in American culture that polygamy is unconsciously considered “not up for debate,” and synonymous with evil even across
Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse and is culturally accepted in many parts of the world, but is illegal in the United States. There are two well known forms of polygamy, both of which are still presently practiced in numerous cultures globally, polygyny and polyandry. These practices take place in societies where it is important to have either more men or more women in a families’ household based on the kind of environment they reside in. This paper is going to take a look at who practices polygamy, the history of polygamy in the United States, and how this kind of polygamous lifestyle affects the children that are the products of these family structures.
