Polygamous relationships can on some occasions be beneficial towards the woman as they are most likely to be mated with a wealthy older man. Financially this is beneficial for the women because she is able to share the wealth along with several other wives that the wealthy male has. Their children are also ensured a safe future as their father has a well amount of money to spend on them.
One of the many reasons that polygamy should continue to be illegal is because of the children that have to suffer through the pain that their mothers may suffer as well. Children have to suffer through the abuse that their fathers put upon them and the education that they earn is extremely unhelpful to them. Children in addition to being abused also endure

Crying from children within these families is not allowed and they use sheer force to quiet them. To “quiet” them down they use abusive methods that could absolutely send the parents to jail such as putting their children under a faucet, drowning them, spanking them until they could cry no more, and much more. Children are subjected to religious indoctrination by force and are told to “keep sweet” at a young age so they are not abused constantly. If they do not “keep sweet” they will either be banished by the prophet or will be abused until they follow orders and do as they are told. In Andrea Moore-Emmett’s “Behind the cloak of Polygamy”, Emmett talks about how women and children are treated unfairly within polygamous households and cannot stand up to their father’s or husband's tyranny. Emmett talks to Laura Chapman, a polygamy survivor, and laura says “since a father”can all but kill a child for deliberately disobeying”’ (Emmett 1). Emmett is talking about how Laura is telling her about how a father can almost succeed in achieving what he wants since mothers can do nothing about their child being beaten almost to
Marriage is a social institution that is practiced globally. Traditionally marriages are known to occur between one man and one woman. However, cultural values and time have reshaped and birthed new types of marriages. Polygamy is a type of marriage that is often practiced around the world specifically in Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Polyamorous marriages have been in existence for centuries. Polygamy is classified into two categories, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygyny is the most popular type of polygamy, in this type of polygamous marriage, a man is married to multiple women. On the other hand, polyandry which is the least familiar type of polygamy is where a woman is married to multiple husbands. The intolerance of Mormons in the United States has led to the outlawing of polyamorous marriages. The Morrill Anti Bigamy law of 1862 outlawed the practice of polygamy in the United States. Like many other laws, this law can be overturned. In fact, it should be reversed because illegalizing polygamy is unethical. Polygamy should be legalized because it is unconstitutional for it to be illegal, same-sex marriages and interracial marriages are legal, therefore so should polyamorous marriages. In addition, legalizing polygamy would prevent immigrant families who practice polygamy from being separated and it would also strengthen the feminist movement.
Could you imagine living in a world where it is acceptable for a man to marry more than one woman and be open about it? Not many can and that is why the practice of polygamy such is seen as taboo. The families usually live very private lives and they do not interact with a lot of the rest of America due to anti-bigamy society we live in. Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person at the same time (Webster 2015). This is not to be confused with an open relationship or an open marriage. This topic has been viewed and deemed as controversial for many years. As a practice that was not accepted in the public eye, it recently has gained more attention with mainstream media and culture. With shows on television such as “Sister
The rates of polygyny have decreased because more countries have become more ‘westernized’. Polygyny is more prevalent than polyandry because in some asian/african countries men would like to have more than one wife especially if they are wealthy to help and support their children etc… Pros of Polygyny is that it provides more support and gives men a freedom of choice. Also could ensure financial stability. Cons include jealousy and it could lead to abuse.Pros of Polyandry include financial stability and more support. Cons could include jealousy and lack of attention among
Adults should be free to practice polygamy because there should not be a limit to how
However, while consensual polyamorous relationships are not illegal in the US, there is no recourse for people who which marry two or more of their significant others. Essentially polygamous matrimony is currently illegal in the US. Putting this to the test of Dworkin’s conditions for justifiable paternalism requires checking it with a lot of parameters. Firstly, I would say this is very much a moral question that is mostly reliant on how the people voting and legislating the issue regard their ideology and religion. This also makes it an example of impure paternalism, since the people deciding this can have a skewed opinion given their personal bias. Seeing as this does not affect anyone but the people involved it has truly no effect on society at large, apart from the need to draw up some new laws regarding legal issues and taxation for polygamous unions, I cannot see any reason for this being up to the individuals
In my opinion, the topic of polygamy is very controversial. I strongly support gay marriage and the notion that the courts have no legal right to impose on the lives of two consenting adults. However, gay marriage cannot and should not be compared to polygamy mainly because historically, polygamy has been used by men to subjugate women by establishing male-dominance within families and across society. It has been tied to all kinds of abuse. Whereas, two males or two females making a lifetime commitment to each other does not affect society at large in the same way. Personally, I have no moral problem with allowing consenting adults to participate in polygamy. However, before I can be fully on board with the idea, I would need some evidence
Polygamy is not a common practice in the United States due to the fact that it is illegal, but
In most cases of polygamy, the man has multiple wives. A man having multiple wives decreases the chance of other heterosexual males finding a female partner. This may result in something that is already occurring in China due to the imbalance of males to females. There are instances of women being kidnapped, trafficked, and raped because some men are not able to find a partner. If polygamy becomes a common occurrence in Canada, it is likely that this will be the outcome of it. However, an imbalance of the ratio of single males and females is not the only problem with polygamy. Using the Winston
An area for farther research why polygamy is practiced and the history of it. Also, some research on how people feel about polygamy in today’s world would be interesting to read about.
Cesar Chavez, an American civil rights activist and labor organizer, once stated that the “[p]reservation of one 's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures” (University of Florida, n.d., para. 14). This oft-quoted aphorism is particularly relevant in Canada, a multicultural country where certain cultural practices — such as polygamy — are proscribed. In opposing polygamy, critics argue that the cultural practice is incongruent with Canadian values, perpetuates gender inequality, and is inherently harmful to women and children (Reference re: section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada, 2011). On the other hand, proponents of polygamy contend that prohibition infringes on their Charters of Rights and Freedoms, specifically section 2(a) or freedom of religion (Bala, Duvall-Antonacopoulos, MacRae, & Paetsch, 2005). In light of the foregoing, this paper will evaluate the polygamy legislation in Canada for consistency (or lack thereof) with the Constitution.
Polyamory is the practice of loving more than one person and having relationships accordingly, whether emotionally, romantisexually or otherwise. While many people's perception is that this orientation is all about sex, quite the opposite is true. Polyamory literally means "many loves". It is the practice of making relationships intentional: ones consciously filled with honesty, transparency, consent and love. / Within American culture, monogamy is by far the most widely-practiced form of relationships. This model for romantisexual relationships is not intrinsically wrong but is most certainly a default. What if there is another way that the majority of society is overlooking? What if loving, meaningful relationships are abundant and people
The fact of the matter is polygamy needs to be stopped so individuals are free from being molested, hurt, and abused in many different forms. So, in my personal opinion, I believe that polygamy is negative and should stay illegal. There are so many individuals through the FLDS Church that have been violated in ways that no person should ever experience. It is not something as an act that could ever be positive.
Should Polyamory be looked upon in such a harsh light or should it be accepted peacefully? Why do people sneer at it with such venom, and why do others still reach for it full of hope and need for help. Sometimes relationships like these are necessary even. Imagine a teenager, a girl or boy or non-gender binary teenager, it doesn’t matter. Now imagine they have mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, and they wish for a large amount of care and love and reassurance to help make them feel better and not hate themselves, or even worse, wish to die. Now imagine that this teenager’s partner is kind and loving to them in the beginning, but quickly becomes fed up and aggressive towards the teenager; claiming that they are too clingy, even though they’re doing their best just trying to function and feel human. Now imagine how the teenager feels because of their partners words. The teenager may feel broken, and lost, alone, and almost as if there is something wrong with them. So then they try and adjust themselves, drawing back their emotions and neediness, sparing others even if it only hurts them more; until finally the teenager is so emotionally backed up that something bad happens. All they ever wanted was reassurance, positive attention and love to help them through what they had to deal with. Instead they got vehemence and pain. Now imagine that teenager again, but instead with two partners where all three love each other
While the Supreme Court and the rest of us are all focused on the human right of marriage equality... . We need to legalize polygamy, too. Legalized polygamy in the United States is the constitutional, feminist, and sex-positive choice. More importantly, it would actually help protect, empower, and strengthen women, children, and
Children are currently a major part of polygamy. By far children suffer the most in polygamy and its extremely difficult for children to escape polygamy if they would like to. These communities feel losing one children they are losing all the people they would have as their offspring. Polygamy needs to remain illegal to prevent them from experiencing being neglected, abused and taught wrongful gender equality. Children who are raised in polygamy often do not have much say in what happens in their lives. Due to the various amount of wives the man in the polygamous relationship might have depends, on how many children that will be born. Children could have a lot of insecurities due to the fact some children might be subject to favouritism. With so many children it would be hard to make everyone feel special without
