The new century, as well as the individuals that experience it, had presented many challenges, as terrorism, wars and economy. These result to be evidence that society just like a river, is in constant movement and change. We may not attempt to fully understand its factories and phenomenons, but instead develop a sense of conscience and constant learning from our own culture. Where do family values stand in today’s world? There is the traditional family that make ends meet no matter what and more common today is the modern family that take divorce like it is no big deal. Kingslover and White give great examples of what a traditional family is like and how the modern family is taking over. The world makes it easy to deplete family values in this day and age but really divorce has been considered for centuries. Divorce has become a regular occurrence and highly prevalent in today’s society, which is focused upon and exemplified throughout the essay “Stone Soup,” whereas, traditional family values and permanent marital status is shown in “Once More to the Lake.”
Although each culture views families and how they treat each other differently than other cultures, but when it comes to the traditional two-parent, nuclear family type, the relationship ties can be strained. Since the father would typically be out for the day working and the mother at home with the children, the mother spends the most time with the kids forming a stronger bond than the father might. Leading into the next function, economic cooperation, in which the work done at home is often not paid for resulting in the mother losing say or power over what occurs within their family. In addition, it compiles more tension and stress onto women due to 1950’s TV shows of how a family should be. In the article, “In Search Of A Golden Age,” Stephanie
This week’s readings take us on a journey through the makings of a successful multigenerational family business. I personally noticed a few of the same themes from class in the readings, two primarily. The first was the processes and concepts a family can include in their business model that allow the company to run as efficiently as possible (such as deliberating on share distribution, holding family meetings, or implementing a non-family board). The second was the steps that current generation leaders should take to prepare the next generation, and the qualities to look for in the next generation. These two themes, as discussed in class, were the main themes in Chapters three and four of Poza’s book.
The balance between work and family life is a delicate balance. You want to be able to pay your bills, but you also want to spend time with your family and make a bond with them. At work you can sometimes be stressed and frustrated with projects and papers. When you spend time with your family, you are more relaxed and at ease. Some examples of this balance can be shown through the stories of The Company Man, The Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket, and The Diary of a Mad Blender.

The husband goes to work at the company building, while his wife stays home to cook and clean. This may sound familiar, and it should because these are the common gender roles or stereotypes found in society. The roles of each partner can range from a well-defined division between responsibilities--such as working a job at the office and staying at home to take care of the children--or equal apportionment of all duties. These expectations of spouses correlate with other aspects of the men and women’s lives, including marriage. In certain situations, the partners’ matrimony is damaged as a direct result from the gender roles that command them. The bond between husband and wife is weakened when there is a change in gender roles, or when
