It has been referred to as black gold because it is a commodity that is highly sought after. It can be construed that oil is almost as valuable as water. It is used in, literally, every facet of our lives. “Petroleum products include transportation fuels, fuel oils for heating and electricity generation, asphalt and road oil, and the feedstocks used to make chemicals, plastics, and synthetic materials found in nearly everything we use today” (EIA). Legislators in Washington would object, but the fact of the matter is that foreign dependency on oil dictates foreign policy. Jad Mouawad, from The New York Times, feels “the reversal of fortune in America’s energy supplies in recent years holds the promise of abundant and cheaper fuel, and it could have profound effects on what people drive, domestic manufacturing, and America’s foreign …show more content…

Technological advances with sustainable fuels like wind and sun were supposed to be the answer to the energy crisis. Cheaper fuels have dampened “enthusiasm for clean forms of energy and derailed efforts to wean the nation from it wasteful energy habits” (Mouawad). American history demonstrates that Americans are not afraid of any challenge, but this predicament can best be described as kicking the proverbial can down the road. The always fluctuating gasoline prices is frustrating and the practicality of renewable fuels is unnerving. There has been a new surgence in the energy sector, but it is not without controversy. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. This great nation was founded on risk taking so why is now any different? A few environmentalists have managed to get many Americans in a tizzy.
