James Naismith or the founder of the game we all love, started it all with just two peach baskets and a soccer ball. Dr. James A. Naismith was a P.E. instructor who wanted to develop a game that would work on wooden floors and an enclosed space. Naismith was inspired by a game called duck-on-a-rock, the objective of the game was to throw a small rock at a “duck” placed on top of a large rock in an attempt to knock the “duck” off. After much thought and deliberation over the name and rules, the game of basketball was born in 1891. Dr. Naismith then went on to write a rulebook consisting of 13 rules and regulations to bring further structure to the game. These rules are still the foundation of the game of basketball we know today. After hearing of the new game of Basketball, the University of Kansas hired Dr. Naismith to launch the first ever basketball program. …show more content…

There are three different ways to score points. The first is called a 2 point field goal, which is a shot made from anywhere inside of the 3 point line. The second is a 3 point field goal; these points are awarded when a player shoots the ball from anywhere outside of the 3 point line. The third is by making a free throw. When a player attempting the field goal is fouled by the defender he is awarded a free throws. Each free throw made counts as 1 point, and during a free throw the player is allowed to shoot from the free throw line unguarded from players on the opposite
