James Thurber went to the University of Ohio and left without a degree(UXL Encyclopedia of World Biography). After he left college he moved to France to work for the army, by encrypting and decoding secret messages. While he was in France working for the army he gathered many ideas for his future works. One such idea was the “little man.” The “little man” is what Thurber described to be as a man who was in the army that was not very sure of himself, because of all of the fighting and struggle that they endured. In Thurber’s story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” the main character, Walter Mitty, was described as being the “little man.” In the story Walter Mitty daydreamed to distract himself from his daily boring, average life. Everything that Walter Mitty daydreamed was about WWII. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” was also influenced by men being controlled by their wife. In the short story Walter Mitty’s wife made him run chores the whole day while driving her around, so that she can shop. Thurber was influenced to include that in the story because of how his wife was like in real life. White(Biography). Thurber’s first short story made while working for The New Yorker was with collaboration with E.B. White. The short story that they both worked on together was “Is Sex Necessary”(Thurber House). “Is Sex Necessary” is a great example of a short story that includes Thurber’s illustration and humor. Since E.B. White helped James Thurber with his first short story it influenced his writing style in his later works. Another influence of the plot of the story was his first wife, who he later divorced, Althea Adams. Althea Adams influenced Thurber’s plot because he used details in their marriage for short stories about controlling wives. His second wife , Helen Wismer, also influenced his plots. Helen Wismer convinced Thurber to leave his job in New York and become a freelance writer in Maine. Wismer was also his secretary and helped him write some of his short stories. Thurber was influenced by many personal events that helped his writing become what we all know and love to this
” The 18-year-old girl dreams of attending college, and in her family, “no one in her family goes to college (“Where Dreams Come From”, stanza 2, line 7).” She wants to have a proper education and become a figure in the real world. Her family is sitting on the sidelines of civilization and she is sick of that fact. That household is aware of this; nonetheless, she still is not allowed to leave. Walter Mitty is no different. His wife is domineering and infuriating, as she constantly admonishes him and tells him he is doing everything incorrect. For instance, when Mitty accidentally speed up his Buick, his wife screeched at him that, “he was driving too fast (“Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, page 1, paragraph 2),” when he “was up to fifty-five km/hr. while knowing her comfort-level was forty-five km/hr.” She prohibits this poor soul from living his life by controlling his every-being than he does of his own body. He cannot accomplish his dream. His desire is not similar to the girl’s. He yearns of being heroic and the center of attention. However, he is the exact opposite and his wife frequently pushes him off the cliff of confidence, where his spirit is shattered. Not only that, he often questions her, “ If it ever occurs to her that he is sometimes thinking.” And she rubs it
In James Thurber's “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” the movie and short story have much different external conflicts. During the short story, Walter's wife is always nagging at him and making his life difficult, while in the movie and it Walter's boss and co-workers who are giving him a hard time.Walter experiences his wife complaining while on their way into town, ¨Not so fast! You're driving too fast...What are you driving so fast for¨ (Thurber 1). He is not paying attention because he is daydreaming about more exciting things than what is going on in his life. In the movie Walter is very busy and nervous so he messes up an assignment and he goes into a daydream. Walter was sitting in the elevator
Do you ever have a moment where you just sit there and daydream? If you ask me it can be pretty dangerous if you do it at the wrong time! So you should watch what you do so you won't be like Walter Mitty. In the short story of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber there are a lot of differences and very little similarities, in my opinion i say the movie was way better.
Characterization is great to have in a short story such as "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". Thurber shows characterization right from the beginning of the short story. The start of the story takes place in Walter's first day dream where he is flying an aircraft in the war but his wife ends up coming into the daydream and telling him he needs to slow down. Walter Mitty is a dynamic character because he is always changing and becoming more and more out of his wife's control. In the story, Walter is faced with a lot of hardship with his wife ruining his daydreams. His daydreams are a way for him to get away from reality and for him to be whoever he wants to be. "We only live
Life is about finding yourself, each other, and being true to one’s self. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an extremely original and creative story written by James Thurber. The movie, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, starring Ben Stiller, conveys a daydreamer escaping his typical life by disappearing into a realm of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. In both the movie and the book, the title character retreats into fantasy as an escape from his mundane reality because in the real world, he is ordinary, insecure, and passive. In the short story, Walter
James Thurber illustrates the central conflict Man vs Society in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Throughout the story, Mitty seems to have a struggle with adapting to the social norms and gender roles he is meant to play. First, Walter Mitty feels society was meant to mock him. Secondly, his feelings for his marriage are indifferent, and the gender roles appear opposite. Lastly, even his daydreams seem to have a tug of war with society.
Walter Mitty’s personality is very timid. He is very absent-minded and has difficulties remembering things because of his on-going daydreams. When it comes to others he is very mindful but not with his wife. He respects her and all but doesn’t pay attention to what she says sometimes. How he is very absent-minded is by an example in the story is when his wife told him to slow because he was driving too fast. Then a second example of his character trait is he is a daydreamer like from the story he daydreams about being a world famous doctor.
This marital relationship is constantly evidence as a major issue for the feminist movement. These female characters are so often made up to rely on their husbands. They are constantly seen as dumb, ditzy, and mentally unhinged, or struggling with staying in reality all of the time (Hall). They are given some weak characteristics that puts them at the mercy of a man. The Feminist Literary Theory allows for this issue to be turned around.
The short story ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ by James Thurber share similarities to the romantic comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the movie, but they also contain many differences. * The short story tells a tale of a man escape reality whilst the movie displays the man daydreaming to enhance reality. In James Thurber’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” Walter Mitty faces the every day challenges of the real world. Thurber uses surreal dreams to allow Walter Mitty to escape these challenges. The main two characters are Mr. and Mrs. Mitty. Mr.Mitty finds himself in the middle of action packed dreams until someone or something brings him back to reality. Walter Mitty escapes through his fantasies because he lacks the strength to face reality and the courage to express his real feelings and opinions.
Walter Mitty is a renowned surgeon, grizzled army sergeant, and deadly assassin that, in his words, could kill a man with any known make of gun from three hundred feet out with his left hand. He commands respect wherever he goes. The only catch is that this is all in his head. Walter Mitty is abnormally average and lackluster, but his daydreams transform the world around him into exciting scenes straight from a blockbuster movie. Walter views his own wife as a distraction from his beloved daydreams, and he has disdain for all of the other equally average people around him in his daily life.
This quote has a big impact because it shows that Walter Mitty at the end changed. We see that he changed because he has some of that bad sass attitude towards his wife Mrs. Mitty at the end by the store. Walter Mitty’s appearance is really odd, it states in the text from the outside source, “Who lives in dreams has become an archetypal figure of the ineffectual, weak-willed, bumbling male in american culture.” the impact of this quote states that Walter Mitty is not really a people person but he's just a person who goes through life trying to find epic missions to keep his life interesting.
Relationships are hard, especially when the couple does not see eye to eye. Walter Mitty and his wife know exactly what that is like. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is a short story written by James Thurber. The setting takes place at Waterberg, Connecticut. The two main characters in this short story are Walter Mitty and his wife, who play significant roles in making this short story come alive despite being very different in many ways. Walter is the protagonist because he is the leading character, while his wife is the antagonist since she causes friction with Walter and his imaginations. Knowing this helps develop the theme of dysfunctional marriages as seen in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” as it is portrayed through the
To externalize Thurber’s inner discomposure toward women, he tends to use his pieces to ridicule the fairer sex. His fiction imitates his life, and his life was filled with scorn and contempt for the path to which he was pinned. Thurber also writes quite a bit about morals. In all the following stories the moral is a variation of: Go with you first instinct.
