Jamestown Colony Characteristics

This meant land became a very important resource since a great deal of land was required to grow tobacco.  Because growing tobacco also required a lot of hard work and labor, more people were needed to work in the fields. The more workers we had, the more tobacco we could grow making more profit of our work. Tobacco was the only cash crop we were able to grow in our little swamp town. John Rolfe had done more than just help Jamestown with producing Tobacco. He had met a beautiful young lady. Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan, paramount chief of the Indians in Tidewater Virginia, was kidnapped and brought to Jamestown.  John Rolfe eventually married her in 1614.  Their marriage coincided with a temporary peace with the Indians, allowing the settlers to develop and expand their colony, including planting more tobacco. We made peace with the natives and at that moment of peace with their tribe Jamestown was at its best. My old friend and I had become friends again, I am very grateful for my friendship with the natives. I had survived many awful things during my time in Jamestown. I almost died of infection and deceases. I was forced to eat the people I had arrived with, some even being my fellow friends. Facing these challenges there wasn't I time I didn't want to give up and leave, but I didn’t. I am here telling you the story of my journey to document what I and many others faced here in Jamestown. Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in North America, founded in 1607 in Virginia. About 104 men and boys arrived at a new settlement in Virginia and named it after their king, James I, which was Jamestown. This new settlement was surrounded by many powhatan people that lived there. Although, even though English have found a new settlement, many colonist died. Colonists died in early Jamestown for three big reasons: their water was bad, they lacked key skills, and they had bad relations with the Powhatans.

Bortholomew Gosnold was the leader, he died within the first five months, and when he died John Smith took over. Josh Smith was prepared to absorb as much as he could about the Indians language and philosophy. Ultimately, John Smith wanted the Indians to trust the colonists. This led to John Smith leading his people to request a trade with the Indians for food, at first, Chief Powhatan refused but then Pocahontas changed his mind. After a while, John Smith began drinking the salty water and got poisoned and they hurried him back to England for medical treatment. Departing from Jamestown and going back to England avoided him being killed. Going to England helped him recover with normal food and

Jamestown is now known as the very first permanent English settlement in the New World. However, from 1607-1610, early Jamestown constantly hovered right above the line of failure from reasons both outside the settlement and within its borders. Three main reasons the Jamestown colonists died were because of their lack of preparation, poor relations with the Native Americans, and the location of their settlement.

Area was disease ridden, and many of the early settlers died from the bad conditions. Everyone ready to leave Jamestown until they found tobacco. Tobacco was a cash crop to them, and gathered lots of money.

The Jamestown landing in 1607 was the first English settlement to be established in North America. In the movie “The New World” Hollywood attempted to tell the story of the Jamestown settlement and the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas. The movie’s portrayal of their relationship was one of two people falling in love. The historical facts of their relationship, however, paint a completely different picture. Hollywood failed to represent the truth and romanticized their relationship which was not one of love, but one of an acquaintance or friendship.

The creation of Jamestown started on May 24, 1607. Captain Christopher Newport led three ships, the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. "They named both the river and their colony after King James I of England" (Jamestown 28). They did not want to leave England completely or they would not have named those two things after him. They probably felt that they needed to name these things after him because he was the main leader and investor of the expedition. The colonies agriculture and Industry started off slow. "They failed to produce silk, grapes, and other items because of the Virginia climate" (Jamestown 29). They had trouble growing these because they thought that they would grow as they did in England but the climate was much different. They brought a lot of stuff over that they thought would work but did not and this trial and error resulted in a long process before they finally found the first product that grew or worked. A new land opportunity was a huge impact when it came into the hearts of Europeans between the fifteen and sixteen hundreds. It led most citizens leave their country and settle within the great Americas to achieve either religious freedom or a better protection system.Two of the most famous settlements of the English includes Jamestown,Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts. The two colonies had a government and an economic growth, which the Europeans accomplished to make, resulting a balance in society. Though, at the same time the settlers faced many hardships which they later had to overcome in the colonies.

Settling Jamestown was not easy, there were many struggles. Some of these included, food supply, diseases and brackish water, and unpredictable harsh weather. These are the three main hardships settlers in Jamestown faced.

Jamestown, Virginia was America’s first founded permanent English colony. It was founded on May 14, 1607 when the first English colonists arrived and discovered the land. The Virginia Company settlers landed on Jamestown looking to create a colony about 60 miles from the Chesapeake Bay. The settlement of Jamestown was one of the first cultural encounters that planted the seeds of what would eventually become the nation America is today .

Jamestown land was desirable because of the many trees for building houses and ships,growing crops, and good hunting ground.

James town was the first settlement in North America and was developed mainly to supply to the mother country with new goods. Being the first settlement James Town had challenges they had to overcome versus Massachusetts which was a town started by a religious group known as Puritans who had no obligation to England other than coming to North America to practice their religion freely.

Throughout the 17th century, the English faced many hardships. The settlers of Jamestown had faced misfortune of the new land such as disease and malnutrition, and failure of crops. Over time the English built their economic and social structure with perfecting crops, indentured slaves and building a new society that would spark others to explore.

The first settlement that was made in what is now America, was Jamestown. It was found by European explorers. They thought they were the only ones on this new land. They later found out that the Powhatan Indians also lived there. They built a wall around their village to keep the Indians and the spaniards out. They were all afraid to go outside the wall because they might get killed. It made it very hard for them to get food and water. After a couple months of living in Jamestown many people started dying. Most of them were dying from diseases and starvation. They would eat anything they could find like; cats, dogs, horses, and even people. In April 1606, King James I established Jamestown and on May 13, 1607, colonists began to arrive at Jamestown. When establishing Jamestown as a colony, the Virginia Company was in search of economic opportunities. The citizens wanted to escape poverty and prosecution. They wanted to be able to believe in what they wanted. The first month in Jamestown was a struggle for all passengers. The moment the passengers came ashore, they immediately began on settlement. Serious problems soon emerged when about 15,000-25,000 Indians were already living in the Chesapeake Bay when the colony was founded. The Indians were part of the Powhatan Confederacy which was ruled by Powhatan, a powerful leader. At this time, the English settlers were looking for gold that no one was farming. In this situation, Captain John Smith became the colony’s leader and established a “no work, no food” policy. Smith had been instrumental in trading with the Powhatan Indians for food but their relationship was tense in all aspects.
