It was not an easy beginning at Jamestown. In 1607, 104 colonists made the venture through Chesapeake Bay and up the James River, coming across a little island which would become known as Jamestown, but little did they know about the dangers they would face. In 1606, King James I granted a charter to establish a settlement in North America. The expectation of this movement was to find riches, spread the teachings of Jesus Christ, and possibly find a new route to China. The founding of Jamestown (The United States’ first permanent English colony) in Virginia on May 14, 1607 commenced a series of cultural encounters that helped shape the nation. The government, language, customs, beliefs and desires of these early settlers are still part of the United States’ heritage today. However, the survival of this colony was achieved by a hair's breadth. Certain circumstances caused drawbacks and problems for the Jamestown Settlers such as: disease, conflict with the local Native American tribes, incapability of survival due to occupations, and starvation so brutal they even resorted to cannibalism. These complications nearly brought the settlement to an end.

Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in North America, founded in 1607 in Virginia. About 104 men and boys arrived at a new settlement in Virginia and named it after their king, James I, which was Jamestown. This new settlement was surrounded by many powhatan people that lived there. Although, even though English have found a new settlement, many colonist died. Colonists died in early Jamestown for three big reasons: their water was bad, they lacked key skills, and they had bad relations with the Powhatans.

The Jamestown colonists were on the verge of becoming a dead colony, but somehow they pushed through the many challenges brought to the table, and became a successful colony. The Europeans sailed to Jamestown in 1607 on James Island. During this time period, life in Jamestown was very difficult because they had so many obstacles to overcome. The reasons why so many colonists at Jamestown died are because of starvation, disease, and conflict with the Indians.

Why did so many colonists die?" In early Jamestown, from 1607 to 1610, 452 colonists died even though Jamestown was supplied with 560 colonists. This leaves only 90 colonists left after the May of 1610. On May 14, 1607, colonists set off for Jamestown Island to build a settlement there. They did not know that there were close to 15,000 Powhatan Indians in the forest. Most people who came were from the ages of 17 to 35 years old. Some were servants that needed to pay off debt while others wanted to get profit from the project and would become successful. It did not come without the loss since a near eighty percent of the population died or 452 colonists as mentioned before. Colonists and Natives were too confident and they tried to survive in the deathful fighting's and attacks! In 1607 the first English colonists arrived on the James River. They were sent by the Virginia company to find riches like gold, copper, and metal. They brought 104 men with them and three ships: The Susan Constant, the Discovery, and the Godspeed. When they arrived on the James River they also founded Jamestown which was the first English settlement in 1607 although before the colonists even got to the New World the emperor Powhatan was in power. Although why did so many colonists died in early Jamestown between 1607 and 1611? The reason why so many colonists died in Jamestown between 1607 and 1611 was because of disease, attack of Natives, and drought. So in the next few paragraphs, I will prove using historical evidence that colonists died because of disease, drought, and attacks of natives.

Jamestown is now known as the very first permanent English settlement in the New World. However, from 1607-1610, early Jamestown constantly hovered right above the line of failure from reasons both outside the settlement and within its borders. Three main reasons the Jamestown colonists died were because of their lack of preparation, poor relations with the Native Americans, and the location of their settlement.

It was to be the first permanent English settlement in the “New World” - where it was commonly thought that this new land would contain riches, a myriad of hidden trade routes to China, and more! In 1607, three ships sent by King James the first sailed into Chesapeake bay, Virginia carrying each over 100 people. They then sailed up the James river and settled on a piece of land today called James island. This piece of land was home to over 15,000 Powhatan natives. They gentleman who provided the voyage came here to become rich and make money by collecting animal pelts, wood, and iron. The cause of numerous colonist fatalities in early Jamestown was in direct correlation to their relations with the natives, the horrendous lack of essential supplies impeding their survival, and atrocious ailments leading to inevitable disease.

In hope of a new beginning 110 people traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to a small area in Virginia. In 1607, at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, hopeful spirits had arrived. With a blessing from King James these people had arrived to start a settlement. They had no idea what was in store for them. If only they knew that the story of their death would later be told for many years. The colonists who came to Jamestown from 1607 - 1611 died because of polluted water, starvation, and different reasons for death.

Early Jamestown had an astonishingly high death rate of 80%. 545 colonists were sent to Jamestown and of the 545, 356 people died. In 1607, King James I sent the first settlers to Jamestown, Virginia. When the colonists arrived in Jamestown, it was in the middle of a drought and many problems followed after the drought. During early Jamestown, from 1607 to 1611, over 350 people were struggling to survive. The three main reasons colonists died were because of their environment, their relationship with the natives, and their own human error.

James town was the first settlement in North America and was developed mainly to supply to the mother country with new goods. Being the first settlement James Town had challenges they had to overcome versus Massachusetts which was a town started by a religious group known as Puritans who had no obligation to England other than coming to North America to practice their religion freely.

After Jamestown was settled people in europe began to see that there was opportunity in the new world. While people saw opportunity there was something in the way of their success, the native americans. The settlers and the native americans held a dicate relationship with one another and in the colonies beginnings the indians were not a major problem, but as the the seventeenth came more and more Europeans were in the new world. This caused a change in the relationship with the indians and the English settlers. When the English first begin to explore and colonize the new world they do not fight the indians the make peace with them.

On the 14th of May, colonists established the English settlement of Jamestown. They faced many struggles along the way and sadly, many colonists died. Back then not many people were qualified as doctors, so if people got sick, they most likely wouldn’t make it. When there was no water, the colonists had nothing to quench their thirst, so they died of dehydration. Sometimes they would not have enough grains, therefore when winter came, they had no food. The reason so many colonists died was, disease, drought, and a harsh winter.

In 1607 a group of 120 Englishmen who sought gold and other treasure established Jamestown, Virginia. This town was named in honor of King James I who granted this land to the Virginia Company of London. The group of men did not in fact find treasure. More than half of the men succumbed to starvation or diseases and died less than a year later. Of the original group of men only 38 remained. In response to this the Virginia Company of London sent even more colonists to Jamestown, but many of the new settlers also perished.
