SOCIAL BELIEFS The social beliefs of Japan differ greatly from those of our own. In order to have a positive interaction with a person of Japanese decent it is important to be aware of their culture and beliefs. In Japan time is an important concept. There are clocks almost everywhere you look. Japanese people are very punctual and precise. It is custom for them to arrive at least 15 minutes early to appointments. To be late, without notifying someone, is a sign of disrespect, and should be avoided at all costs. When interacting with people of Japanese decent it is very important to respect their personal space. Standing too close or touching someone is considered rude and will make them very uncomfortable. Avoid making eye contact as
During the later half of the 19th century, Japan was rapidly growing their imperial power across Asia. As soon as Japan was seen as an imperial country, the United States started to reevaluate its trade relationship with Japan. The United States stopped all sale of material that would have been beneficial towards Japanese expansion , angering Japan. Later, on December 7, 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy had attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On February 19, 1942, president Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the Executive Order 9066, ordering the internment of people of Japanese heritage. The executive order was determined by economic issues, national security threats and, the most influential, racism towards Japanese.
Visits are generally arranged in advance and are very rarely spontaneous (Japan). When someone comes for a visit they must remove their shoes in the entry area of the home and place them together, pointing toward the outdoors; slippers are usually worn while inside (Japan). It is also customary to remove your coat prior to stepping into the entry area (Japan). Guests are usually modest and reserved when they are visiting and will be offered the most comfortable seat in the home (Japan). When offered a meal it is customary for the guest to hesitate slightly before accepting it and will then accept with gratitude (Japan). Guests do not usually offer compliments on household items, as this may embarrass the host (Japan). It is customary to bring fruit or cake to offer as a gift for the host which is given and accepted with both hands and a slight bow (Japan). It is considered rude for a host to open a gift from a visitor at the time it is given (Japan).
Yasumasa Morimura was born in Osaka, Japan 1951; before the end of the American Occupation and during the Korean War. It was at this time in Japan that society had become increasingly modernized and influenced by western culture. Subsequently, the foreign influence of Japan’s culture affected their culture, politics and education. With a westernized curriculum, much of the education focused on occident values, ideas, and art. Despite Japan’s rich history, much of the art history that was taught had originated from western culture.
Japanese and American culture differs in a plethora of ways, but also have several similarities, Showing that no matter how different people are they still have some sort of common ground. Japanese culture is based off of long held traditions that are derived from ancient Japan. American culture, however, is ever changing due to the nature of American society. Japanese culture favors those who conform, while punishing those who are different. On the other end of the spectrum, American culture applauds those who are different. Japanese and American cultures have drastically different social hierarchy and family roles while still having similarities in pop culture.
The things that were done to the Japanese Americans were unfair and misunderstood as far as making it look like these innocent citizens were a issue in American society. I will be discussing this issue in my opinion and what i think the issue really is, I will support this with information and evidence that i collected from various websites, to follow up with textual evidence that will support my claim and example showing different perspectives of the issue.
People no longer use the term “Japanese American” in today's society. Instead, they are no longer thought as a separate group and are incorrectly categorized as “Asian American”, along with Vietnamese American, Chinese American, etc. Japanese Americans have an extremely unique background in terms of their origins, history, and struggle with racialization. Like many ethnic groups, Japanese Americans have been subjected to many different portrayals throughout American history. Even though cultural separation and suspicion are deemed as immoral, such practices toward them were thought to be necessary by the American Government. For a good amount of time, they suffered from racial hostility and violence. Now, in an age where cultural diversity
For the most part, traditional cultural values and constructions are strongly honored among the people of Little Tokyo and those living in Japan. For example, many of the people I spoke to maintained monogamous relationships and grew up in homes where it was highly valued. Moreover, divorce is uncommon for these relationships, unlike here in America where divorce rates are exceptionally high. It likely has something to do with the way the Japanese people present themselves out in the public sphere. The store owner told me the Japanese are very mindful of appearances, and how people would think of you because of it. Certain things like divorce may in turn cause
The importance of punctuality depends on which side of the family she is dealing with. Her American side of the family is closely tied to the military which means punctuality is very important on her father’s side. On her Filipino side, tardiness is a way of life. If a party starts at 7 PM, most people will start trickling in around 8 or 9 PM. This gives the host time to finish preparations for the dinner or party. When it comes to her professional life, punctuality is very important, but otherwise it is not that important to
Because of the emergence of ISIS, everyone in the world pays attention to the Muslims these days. In the past, when Japanese people raided Pearl Harbor, the people in America paid attention to all Japanese and, they also did to the Muslims when September 11th happened. In terms of the treatment toward Muslims American and Japanese-Americans, there are three similarities; the American people judge Japanese American people and Muslim American from appearance, the American forced those groups to be American, and the American people formed some bias on Japanese and Muslims. The American people formed the thought on them without knowing anything about them.
Precision and punctuality is believed to be the order of the day in the Japanese society in both workplaces and social settings. Punctuality is highly regarded as an important factor that has contributed to the success of the Japanese economy in global scene. In 2013, the train transport between Osaka and Tokyo recorded an average delay of six seconds only. There is a deep sense of respect for other people’s businesses with concerns that such activities should not be interrupted due to lateness. However, the lack of flexibility has been faulted by critics who believe that the Japanese people are too obsessed with time keeping and precision. However, the origin of such values is still unknown to many with questions arising on whether such values existed before industrialization in Japan. The fact that the values are associated with Japan’s position as a global economic powerhouse raises concern on the origin of such values.

As a first generation American of Salvadorian and Mexican descent, I am fluent in English and Spanish. Although I am bilingual, Santa Monica College’s multinational student body was a culture shock for me because of the many languages I overheard. I decided to learn Japanese because of my pleasant and friendly experiences with the Japanese community. With the assistance of my Japanese friends, I have completed elementary level Japanese 2 from SMC and learned much about the fascinating culture. This summer I will travel to Japan in aim to visit many Japanese cities, eat a lot of delicious
Japan is a uniformed society where many of their people are conscious of their respective positions and roles they play in the range of social structures. On top of that, it includes the action to dress accordingly, where it be a student, service industry employee, office worker, or yakuza member, uniformity is a
The nation of Japan, even more so than other countries, has a long, long history behind it. It's a country dating back as far as the B.C. Era, and that has experienced various powerful events that has shaped the country since its birth. As with other nations, an important part of their past lies in their religion. Before they were introduced to Buddhism and other outside religions, which had a large impact on their society, the Japanese followed something known as Shinto. As the one religion that can truly be called “Japanese,” it follows that its influences would still remain in the eyes of the people and only aided by a traditionally xenophobic view of the world.
