Jazz Music In The 1930's

Jazz emerged towards the beginning of the 20th century, but didn 't just spring up out of nowhere. Instead, it was a creation that developed from popular music styles of the 19th century that were blended and combined to entertain not only the social dancers, but also, the nation as a whole. The two main music styles that jazz evolved from were ragtime and the blues. Both ragtime and the blues had their beginnings in African-American communities. While both of these music styles strongly contributed to the creation of jazz and have a lot of similarities, they do have their differences. These differences lie within their origins, their instruments, the elements of the music styles and how these elements influenced jazz, and their artists and composers.

Jazz is a style of music composed of various instruments. Originating in New Orleans, Louisiana it is believed that jazz rose up from the traditional African American style of dance music. As Jazz progressed it became very adaptive including styles from Spanish, blues, folk, and orchestral. “Anthropologist call this process ‘Syncretism’— the blending together of cultural elements that previously existed separately.” (www.nytimes.com) This new style of music would soon start to catch the ears of those in the northern region of the United States. Jazz would make its way up to Chicago, New York, and Charleston branching out throughout the US.

     The music called Jazz was born sometime around 1895 in New Orleans. It combined elements of Ragtime, marching band music and Blues. What made Jazz such a different perspective of traditional music was its act of improvising. There was a widespread use of improvisation often by more than one player at a time. Songwriters would write the music down on a piece of paper, and then the Jazz musicians would try their best to play the music. Usually in a Jazz piece, musicians would use the song as a starting point to improvise around. Jazz musicians would play a familiar song to the audience, and by the time they were done with the piece they would stir up a totally different feeling away from the

The Jazz Age was a cultural tectonic shift that took place in America during the 1920’s, or "the Roaring Twenties”, from which both jazz music and dance emerged. This movement was coupled with both the equally phenomenal introduction of mainstream radio and the conclusion of World War I. Although the era ended as the Great Depression victimised America in the 1930's, jazz has lived on in American pop culture.

The 1930’s was a decade of extremely hard times, following the stock market crash and an extreme depression. In spite of the tremendous hardships in America during this decade, it also became a time of great music that is still remembered today. Jazz music was highly popular in this time, and Billie Holiday was a famous jazz performer. She stood out from many other musicians because of her intense and passionate performances. Jazz arose from “unacceptable” segments of society, but quickly grew like wildfire. We often think of the 1930’s as the decade that jazz became civilized, and famous throughout popular culture through the work of pioneering artists like Billie Holiday. People did not own televisions or cable, so radio was their main source of entertainment, and music during this decade was both up beat and a source of relaxation. “Strange Fruit” defied musical category because it was considered too artsy to be folk, and too explicitly political to fit into jazz. This is why “Strange Fruit” became such a powerful phenomenon. Many other artists later took on this song, changing the genre but still portraying the same message. Nina Simone dramatized “Strange Fruit” in the context of the Civil Rights Movement. More important artists like Jeff Buckley, Rene Marie, Labor Camp Orchestra, and many others made their own rendition on the song, still leaving all of their audiences moved by the powerful imagery of the lyrics.

Jazz has always been a part of the American tradition. Some may say they like Jazz for its rhythmic twist and turns. Others may love the soothing melodies from an improved Trumpet solo. All in all, Jazz has been an American staple and has molded today’s popular music, into what it is today. It’s very different from classical music, which is written out and strict. Jazz is much more. It’s made up of spontaneity and improvisation, which makes up an idea on the spot. There are many wide varieties in Jazz. There is Bebop Jazz, Avante Garde Jazz, Acid Jazz, Free Funk Jazz, Soul Jazz, Swing Jazz, and many, many more! These forms of Jazz can be seen and heard in some of your favorite music of Today. It’s been widely used by the world. There is an important reason as to why this genre contributes to the growing of music. We first take a look into the root of all Jazz. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the country of Africa was the first known country to use rhythm primarily for the element of musical expression, and ensembles composed entirely of percussion instruments created extended polyrhythmic works. These polyrhythms, which means the “layering of multiple rhythms.”, were record in Western music. African music did not use paper, or sheet music. Jazz music is a blend of white middle class thoughts and African American traditions. Jazz originated in New Orleans in the beginning of the 1920’s. The Jazz Age was from 1920 through 1929. During the 1920’s, the First World War had just ended in 1918 and the Great Depression was affecting the citizens of the United States. Jazz music and dancing helped people forget about the terrible Great Depression. It gave the citizens a reason to be happy and love life during the 1920’s. The new form of music allowed people to express themselves in new ways. Jazz music was influenced by African American musicians, changed the music industry all over the world, and affected the society.

In the article, “Birthplace of Jazz,” Naydja Bynum writes that jazz “...is not an invention. It's alive. It grows, it dies, it changes, it stays the same” (Bynum). Many aspects of society in the 1920’s contributed to the life jazz music brought to the world and the impact it continues to have on modern music today. Post-war strains, racial segregation, and the wild, carefree life of the of the era had the greatest influence on the music of the 1920’s.

To start off, the history of jazz music first started off in New Orleans. It was created by african americans in the city. The music was a mix of African rhythms, and European folk songs. Most of the time it was instrumental, and included instruments such as brass and reed instruments, piano, drums, bass, and guitar.

The foundation of jazz is associated with the Black experience in the United States, but different cultures have added their own personal experiences and styles to this art form as well. As a result of jazz spreading around the world, it grew locally, regionally, and nationally in cultures. Each decade brought a new form of jazz including brass bands in the twenties, swing bands in the thirties, and smooth cool jazz in the forties.

Jazz is a music era where the African Americans started to thrive. Before Jazz was made ragtime music played a role of introducing Jazz. When ragtime started to use improvisation in the music. Jazz originated in New Orleans in the early twentieth century. Jazz music was no longer considered ragtime by 1918; however, jazz was barley starting in 1895-1917.

The 1920’s were a time were the United States of America really thrive. America during this time has just had an economic boom after WW1. This gave America time to develop a culture with new music and other things. Jazz and the blues were among the most popular with lead music players being black and other ethnicities. People had to be more liberal with their gatherings since alcohol was banned during this time. So they used music to dance, sing, and as a cover up to sell and distribute alcohol.

During the nineteenth century, African American people faced many obstacles and coped through activities such as singing, and musical skills. Especially in New Orleans, a port city where people were either black (or colored creole a mixed African and Spanish or African and French descent) or white. Jazz is a mixture of many diverse components, and genres like polyrhythmic African American folk music. Over the years jazz has been played by every color of people, every gender and age but still remains an African American based genre.
