May 23rd, 2016 Othello: Jealousy Jealousy is resentment against a rival, a person enjoying success or advantage, or against another’s success or advantage itself (Dictionary.com). In Othello, by William Shakespeare, jealousy is the driving force of action throughout the play and the characters’ behavior and perspective to change as they are consumed by this emotion. Jealousy is exhibited in different forms in the characters Othello, Iago, Roderigo, Brabantio, and Bianca. These forms of jealousy exhibited by the characters are: romantic jealousy, jealousy over power, and morbid jealousy (Hoyt). Iago jealousy fuel his hatred for Othello causing Iago to lose his reasoning. With Iago reasoning was lost, his determination to complete his revenge plot towards become relentless and borderline insane. Othello exhibits this concept of jealousy throughout the whole play. The root of Othello’s morbid jealousy comes from lies, rumors, and manipulation from “Honest Iago.” Iago causes Othello to go from a confident and stoic high ranking military soldier to an animalistic murderer. Othello’s jealousy is towards his wife Desdemona, which he murders, and Cassio. Iago’s manipulation made it seem as if Desdemona was unfaithful; However, she was never unfaithful to Othello. Othello does not fully believe Iago until he sees the Desdemona no longer has the handkerchief, not to mention it was in Cassio’s possession. The handkerchief was the final straw that made Othello lose his reasoning and becomes headstrong towards all thoughts except his wife’s
