Compare and contrast Jim Crow laws of the southern United States with South Africa’s Apartheid.

Jim Crow was a man who created laws, that affected many peoples lives during the 1960s. These laws made it much harder for blacks mainly in the South, but then it started to move upward in the United States. There were many purposes leading to creating these laws. During this era, blacks were excluded from many things and opportunities. These laws made many changes and changed how the things were after these laws were taken away. The Jim Crow Laws affected, harmed, excluded, and ruined many blacks and in some cases white peoples lives.

Let me start by explaining what the Jim Crow Law is, under the Jim Crow, African Americans were relegated to the status of second class citizens. Jim Crow represented the legitimization of anti-black racism. Many Christian ministers and theologians taught that whites were the Chosen people, blacks were cursed to be servants, and God

Jim Crow Laws were mainly found in the southern states of the the US, but could also sometimes be found in northern states. These laws were created around the time the 14th amendment was created in which all races had the right to vote. Jim Crow Laws were meant to limit the freedom of Africans-American. These laws included,”A black male could not offer his hand to a white man” and that blacks and whites were not suppose to eat together. An African-American couldn’t even look in the direction of a white person without being punished.

In theory, it was to create "separate but equal" treatment, but in practice Jim Crow Laws condemned black citizens to inferior treatment and facilities.” The Jim Crows Laws created tensions and disrespect towards blacks from whites. These laws separated blacks and whites from each other and shows how race determines how an individual is treated. The Jim Crow laws are laws that are targeted towards black people. These laws determine how an individual is treated by limiting their education, having specific places where blacks and whites could or could not go, and the punishments for the “crime”

During the time period of 1877-1954 a set of laws called the Jim Crow laws were put in motion. They were laws that made segregation in schools and public places legal. No white person or African American could be doing anything together at anytime. These laws were against all of the African Americans living in the southern states of the United States. I believe the main cause of this conflict was to segregate the African Americans away from whites, just as if they were still slaves. White people thought that they weren’t the same as them just because of their race, color of their skin, or culture and therefore shouldn’t be treated the same.

Jim Crow laws were a complex system of laws and customs that separated races in the South. They were very restrictive to African American people, and lenient to Caucasian people.

The Jim Crow laws were set in place in the South, after the emancipation of the slaves at the end of Reconstruction, following the Civil War. These laws were created to restrain the freedoms of African Americans that were newly established. There were laws for the segregation of schools, railroad cars, gambling and even marriage. The marriage law went as far as to separate white citizens from anyone with one eighth or more colored descent, with Asian races included. Parks, community activities, school supplies, and libraries were restricted. These laws continued to progress and restrict the rights of African Americans until the Civil Rights movement started making waves, pressing the federal government to take action. However, even with the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling that separate is not equal, Jim Crow laws are still tucked away in legislature and are newly created at every turn.

Jim crow Laws were laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States starting from the 1870’s and 80’s. Its goal was to oppress African Americans and treat them horribly no matter male or female. It also wanted African Americans to feel bad and worthless. A man named Thomas Dartmouth was specially known for treating African Americans disrespectfully. He would dress in African Americans clothes (low budget shirts, pants, and shoes) and cover himself in charcoal to make himself look black. It was at first a theater performance but it became a term to describe African Americans . Jim Crow was a way of life that consisted of an inflexible anti-black laws. Under Jim Crow, African Americans were demoted to the rank of second class citizens. Jim Crow laws were social practices of discrimination with white people against the opposite race as them, which was mainly against African Americans. However, the term was originally referred to a black character in the 1800’s minstrel shows in which white performers wore “blackface,” and pretended to be black characters. Legalized throughout twenty-six states (Tischauser), segregation mandated separate schools, transportation, and public facilities—such as water fountains, restrooms, and playgrounds—from 1881-1964 (Hansan). However, due to the frequent bias of the period, black treatment had often been inferior to the supremacy of whites; whites “had all the power, wealth, and privilege” while blacks “faced seemingly endless incidents of terror and humiliation with hardly any freedom” (Tischauser). The Jim Crow laws, the impetus of racial tensions in the Southern United States, mandated the controversial “separate but equal” segregation of the white populace from that of the colored, demonstrated through inferior black social status and political affairs (Hansan).

Jim Crow laws were a set of laws that would Divest the black americans of their basic rights. They were separated from the whites. They had to go to separate schools and had to drink out of separate water fountains as seen in the picture above. The Jim Crow laws were created in order to keep dark-skinned people separate from light-skinned people. After the Civil War, slaves were set free from their “masters.” Soon afterwards in 1865, the 13th amendment was created in order to abolish slavery. However, the Confederate states found ‘loopholes’ that still kept Black people lesser than a White person. After the 13th amendment was created, the ‘Black Codes’ were also created in 1865-66.
