John Brown was an American abolitionist who believed armed insurrection was the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the US. Due to to the violence he used to erase slavery he was considered a murderer/terrorist, however some believed he was a hero, since he fought against slavery. To me John Brown was a hero and villain/terrorist. He was a man who did some things that were looked upon by some as terrorist type acts, but others looked at those same acts as fighting against slavery.
it is quite easy to see Brown as a villain. After all, he committed a massacre in Kansas in which he brutally killed a number of men in front of their wives and kids. In Kansas he also murdered fathers and sons, because they were from the South

The people who thought he was a hero believed strongly in the abolitionist cause. Brown helped fight against slavery, because he believed in equal rights, but he didn’t believe there was a peaceful way to solve this, and so he used violence. I to agree with him that you needed some kind of violence to end slavery, however he killed many innocent people which was wrong. He was someone who did lot’s of very bad things, but he did them for a clearly good cause. In John Brown’s address it states “I intended, certainly, to have made a clean thing of that matter, as I did last winter when I went into Missouri, and there took Slaves without the snapping of a gun on either side, moving them through the country, and finally leaving them in Canada. I designed to have done the same thing again on a larger scale. That was all I intended . I never did intend murder, or treason, or the destruction of property, or to excite or incite Slaves to rebellion, or to make insurrection.” This shows Brown did at first tried to solve slavery peacefully, but it didn’t work so he moved on and used violence. Also in John Brown’s address it states “ I feel entirely satisfied with the treatment I have received on my trial.” This shows that Brown took up for his sins and wants to serve them. This I consider a good act, and also he is fighting for slavery, and if you fight for slavery shouldn’t that make you a hero? Even if John Brown used violence methods to end slavery he still fought against slavery which is
He was a person who went to great lengths to show his help, however he was not secretive about it. He wrote a newspaper call the Tocsin of Liberty, in which he not only published the first names of the people he helped to freedom, but also the names of their slave masters. Because of this many slave owners had arrest warrants written for his imprisonment (Able Brown).
In the mid-1800s, America was truly divided over the crucial matter of slavery-Northerners desired the abolishment of slavery, while southerners demanded the continuation of slavery. John Brown was a Northerner who resorted to the usage of violence to fight against slavery. Some people may believe that John Brown was an extreme radical. But on the other hand, he may be seen as an American hero, fighting for the abolitionism movement.. An American hero is a person who goes out of his or her way to make progress in America, rather it be socially, economically, politically, or in a way where it makes the country a morally better or more prosperous country. And John Brown was one of the many heroes of America.
John Brown was very similar to Nat Turner they both believed that they were chosen by god to lead slaves into freedom and if that required a fight then that was what they had to do. John Brown had a goal and that was to abolish slavery throughout the united states. The trouble in Kansas began when the Nebraska Act was signed by President Pierce, this act engaged that people make a determination on whether Kansas territory should be free or slave. In hopes that Kansas would become free of slaves, the opposing side which was named Border Ruffians invaded their territory and forced the pro-slavery election. After John heard about the fear of Kansas becoming a slave state and after also hearing that the Border Ruffians ransacked the town of Lawrence
Brown's attack on Harper's Ferry affected American culture more than can ever be understood. Tension between the North and South was building in the 1850's. Slavery among many other things was dividing the country into two sections. Brown was executed on December 2, 1859 for his murderous out-lash on society. Was his mind so twisted and demented that he would commit cold-blooded murder? The answer is no. John Brown was a man with a goal and a purpose. When he said that abolition could not be achieved without blood he was right. It is one of histories great ironies; John Brown's struggle preceded the Civil War by only 17 months. Thousands of people were killed in the Civil War, yet John Brown
The question of was John Brown a terrorist or a hero is more of a question asking for an opinion than a question asking for a clear, definitive answer. To a great deal (almost all) of the Southern slave owners, John Brown was definitely thought of as a terrorist because he was a white man who was willing to stand up and die for what he believed in, which was that the enslavement of blacks (negroes) was wrong morally and he did not care if he was killed because of it. John Brown was seen as a terrorist to some because of the fact that he was the man who had orchestrated a raid in which he ended up killing five men in Kentucky and had he captured the armory at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia (now Harpers Ferry, West Virginia), he probably would have gone on a killing rampage of more Southern white slave- owners and in turn caused more fear and hatred from the slave-owners onto himself.
John Brown’s beliefs about slavery and activities to destroy it hardly represented the mainstream of northern society in the years leading up to the Civil War. This rather unique man, however, has become central to an understanding and in some cases misunderstandings about the origins of the Civil War. The importance of Brown’s mission against slavery was colossal to accelerating the civil war between the North and the South. His raid on Harpers Ferry in1859 divided the United States like nothing else before, and could have been the main event leading to the Civil War.
John Brown was a hero. His reasoning for raiding Harper’s Ferry was that he wanted to abolish slavery. Events that led to the raid was the Dred Scott case and how a slave sued for his freedom because his master took him to Wisconsin, a free state. The Supreme Court ruled against Scott and said that black people whether they were free or not couldn't sue because they weren't citizens and that slaves were property and that they could be taken anywhere. Other news was the new territories and deciding on whether “it be slaving owning or free (video 0:14).” Which started the Kansas protest that was once peaceful turned violent. This was the start of John Brown and him wanting to end slavery because he was chosen to by God.The plan was to take control
The first of the three reasons that John Brown became a violent protester to slavery are as follows. In his mind, John believed that he was fulfilling their struggle for freedom in terms of the revolutionary soldier and puritan that he had descended from (3). In other words, the fight was already in him, he was trying to do good because he already saw what the puritans had went through to achieve their freedom. It was in his blood so to speak. The second of the three reasons is that John believed that God had called him to make do this for the slaves. John Brown was a very religious man as it talks about him going to church and evening going as far as making his children write down their sins they committed in the day. (17) The third and final reason for John browns turn to violence is the fact that he did not believe that a non violent tactic would work against the pro slavery people. The massacre of Pottawatomie was a true example of what John Brown believed was the correct way to handle this problem of slavery.
The reason why I say he 's a hero not a terrorist is because if you define a terrorist and line it up with what John Brown believes in and what he wanted to accomplish then you would think he 's a hero also. See people got to remember the Harpers Ferry revolt wasn 't the only slave revolt John Brown was apart of, he was also apart of other attacks in different places. For example in his "Conversation: Patriot or Terrorist" it says " During what became known as the Pottawatomie Massacre and the Battle of Osawatomie, Brown assumed the role of abolitionist leader and led violent attacks against proponents of slavery." See that he wasn 't just apart of one revolt and one attack like Osama Bin Laden was "no" he was part of a couple attacks and battles. His mission was to free slaves and make the economy and country better by allowing everyone to be treated equal and have equal rights. Like what we have sort of
On November 2, 1859 Brown went to court and was found guilty of treason and murder. Right before Brown was hanged, he handed his guard a statement. It read, “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.” This statement predicts that there will be a war between abolitionists and proslavery
John Brown was a white man who hated slavery. He was very religious and thought slavery was against what the bible says. He was a mean and violent man. He thought that the only way to end slavery was with violence. On October 10, 1856 John Brown and group of black and white people, including his sons, rode into the small village in Virginia. The village name was Harper 's Ferry. They had lots of weapons and stole even more. They attacked people at railroad station and took some of them hostage. The people in town fought back
John Brown was one of the causes to the civil war. The south didn’t like John Brown because he was against slavery. He also helped the slaves by trying to lead a revolt by giving them weapons. He was later hanged and there were two different views on John Brown. Some say that John Brown was a hero but others say he was a criminal, but I think John Brown was a hero and here are my reasons.
Should John Brown be considered a hero? John Brown is considered to be a “terrorist” in south but to north he is a hero. John Brown is a “terrorist” because he carried out a small army to kill the slave owners and non-slave owners who agreed with slavery in the south, but is also considered to be a”hero” because he “killed” slavery. He was a radical abolitionist because he believed that violence was necessary to free the slave. His men killed four people while as ten of his men were killed including his two sons.
John Brown a Martyr or God Like Figure. There he yelled making sure his voice was heard. John Brown, a man of god said he dedicated his life to the destruction of slavery on the behalf of god. But later ended up swinging from the ropes he was sentenced to hang on.
His views on cruelly ending slaving with violence and bloodshed only prove is madness. “Several of his colleagues also petitioned that the courts should look at Brown’s questionable mental state when it came to his actions.” With all the “violence” John Brown tried to create with his radical actions to end slavery, his actions did very little to end slavery. On the contrary, slave owners in the south treated slaves more barbaric because they started to feel threatened as his actions. Many thought his rebellion was going to succeed so many treated the slaves as the target. Many believe that his actions help stir up the civil war. In conclusion, John Brown tried to terminate slavery in savage ways many times and each time revealed his level of
