The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. This brings up questions that will be answered in this paper. Should slaves be American citizens? Is it morally correct for one to own another human? John M. Stephen was born in Missouri in 1814 and moved to Texas in 1831 with his family, he served during the Texas Revolution and was paid 24 dollars for his service. He married Maranda E. Walker in 1837 in Washington County, Texas by his bride's uncle, Gideon Walker. Stephen received a land grant for his military service and in 1854 he moved a black family to the post oak grove, now Stephenville, to open a store to trade with the Indians for honey, hides, and buffalo hams. In 1855, he returned with the first 30 settlers after he agrees to give them land if they signed an agreement that they would build and improve it. James J Walker is a man that is put down in history as one of New York City’s mayors. Still James J Walker had a darker side to him that the public didn’t witness. James J Walker better known as Jimmy Walker was born June 19, 1881. A young boy that grew up in poverty, not being a great student, and dropped out of college later was graduated from New York Law School in 1904 and later went into politics and joined the State Senate. After many years in the Senate, Jimmy set his sights in on the 1926 elections for Mayor of New York.

Very few Henry County High School athletes go to a big-athletic Division 1 college. An even smaller list went to play pro. There has only been one that has won a championship in the pro leagues. That man is John Lewis Hudson. John was born in Memphis, Tennessee but he grew up in Henry County, where he played football. He was recruited by many colleges. He ended up choosing Auburn, where he would start for 3 years. John said, “I liked Coach Dye and it was a small town. I liked that it was a small town.” He was then drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and also played for the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

The first person I chose was none other than the iconic, motivational speaker, activist herself, Madam CJ Walker. Walker, whose birth name was Sarah Breedlove, hadn’t always been the successful entrepreneur she was, and had to work extremely hard to obtain her multi-million legacy. She was born when slavery was still prevalent, and her parents, as well as older siblings, worked as slaves on a plantation in Louisiana(her home state). Luckily, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, freeing all slaves from their owners, Madam Walker was the first of her six siblings

Joseph R. Walker was born in Tennessee on December 13th, 1798. He moved to Missouri and died November 13th, 1872. He was a fur trapper and a trader. He knew Benjamin Bonneville, who was an officer in the U.S. Army.

By employing themes such as psychosexual fantasies, race, gender, and violence, artist Kara Walker reconstructs and explores the history and effects of American slavery on American culture. Although being called names like notorious, revolting, anti-progressive, and shameless, she continues to be a pioneer of bringing the unspeakable aspects of American slavery that are not commonly discussed and are left out of the history books to the foreground of public discussion.

John Paul Stevens was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1920. His Parents were Elizabeth Street and Ernest J. Stevens. His family was upper class and very wealthy. John Paul was married to Maryan Stevens from December 1979- August 7,2015, she had passed away. He was also married to Elizabeth Jane from June 7, 1942-1979 until divorced. John Paul and Elizabeth Jane had four children together, John Joseph, Kathryn, Elizabeth, and Susan. John Joseph had died in 1996.
