Joke theft is a very real and serious problem. I believe that for a multitude of reasons, just some of which vary from as simple as “It’s morally wrong.” To as far as to say “That’s a comedian’s way of making money, by being funny and original, to take that originality and try to pass it off as your own and especially if you get paid for it (as is the case in the article) is just cruel.”
My opinion on this topic is that it varies from situation to situation, when it comes to news related jokes, there is only a slim margin of ways to come up with a punch line. For example, I watch a decent amount of the late comedic nightly news shows such as, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Daily show with Trevor Noah. To be frank, most of their monologues sound similar and have a recognisable pattern with their jokes. Being that they report on the news of the day with a comedic twist, they frequently have close if not almost identical jokes, in this case I think it’s not stealing each other’s jokes it might just be closer to that their writers had close, if not, identical ideas for jokes. On the other side of the problem, there are situations in which a stand-up comedian or a comedian of any kind has their jokes taken and retold almost exactly or maybe they tweak something …show more content…

But in my mind changing the name of a sports team or something else minor isn’t enough to be considered it’s own joke because there is a known list of teams that are bad or are hated and changing out a name doesn‘t change the whole idea. To be assessed as an original would have to take an entirely different set up otherwise I can take any sports joke with a punchline that calls a team bad and replace it with the awful St. Louis Blues and call it
