Judith Ortiz Cofer's Short Story 'Volar'

Every author writes his or her wok with a certain aim or goal that he or she would like to achieve. Some of the aims for writing include entertainment, to educate or to simply tell the author’s story. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s short story, “Volar” is an example of a short story written for the purpose of telling one’s story. Cofer, gives an account of her family’s, her mother to be precise, as well as her dreams, which raises the concerns of a story characterized by constant exit from reality and entry into dreams. As a result, this paper aims at giving an account, based on the short story “Volar” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, of dreams versus reality. In the event of picturing the American dream, many people have this concrete picture or idea of perfection and a life well lived. However, the same is not true for every family, which is portrayed by Cofer in “Volar,” which means to fly, thus the discussion, dreams versus reality.
An article by Jenniffer L. Hochschild decribes the American dream as follows, “The idea of the American dream has been attached to everything from religious freedom to a home in the surbubs...a world where anything can happen and good things might.” (15). The short story’s title “Volar” appears to have different meanings throughout the story. While in her dreams, the little girl appears to be quite literally flying. When the little girl’s father tells her mother that they cannot afford to fly to Puerto Rico, her mother expresses disappointment when she says, “Ay, si yo pudiera volar” (Cofer,279). The mother’s phrase can be taken literary to mean the mother wishes they could fly to Puerto Rico. It can also be taken in an abstract way to mean the mother and girl’s wishes to escape the world they live
