“I am A Wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother.” One of the many statements Judy Brady writes in her essay. “Why I Want a Wife,” that appeared in the Ms. Magazine during the new wave of the feminist movement in 1972 (Brady 263). This is a clear statement of her authority as a real wife and mother she makes in this essay. Brady builds her credibility by using valid points in an interesting way to strengthen her arguments and appeal to her reader’s emotions. In this essay, Brady sarcastically aims to convince her readers, mostly feminist women, that the demands and responsibilities that are expected to be taken care of by the wife are unappreciated an unrecognized. With a bit of humor, the essay continues to explain Brady’s sarcastic views on a man’s viewpoint of what he thinks a wife is and what she should be while considering her male friends’ situation. Brady also suggests throughout the essay, examples of what most married women, society and men’s expectations on women’s duties and responsibilities are supposed to be. She is a wife. One of the first things the reader notices is the shortness of the essay is, how it’s simple, straight forward and to the point. Brady convinces the readers why they would want a “wife”. The tone is suitable for the connected audience, mostly feminist women, like wives and mothers because she is too a wife and mother. She states in this essay, “I belong to that classification of people known as wives, I am A Wife,” which makes the readers feel that she has real insight in the actual 70’s American household (263).
