Brutus's nobility starts to get the best of him during the play where he's stated that he is noble. Once he was known for being noble he thought that's what was expected of him to be, so him thinking he needs to be noble for Rome he needs to decide if he needs to join the conspirators and kill Caesar or stand by his side as a
In one's life, there is always a series of ups and downs. There are moments where life is great, and then it can suddenly go down. Sometimes you can be at your greatest height, but then it can be your worst. William Shakespeare portrays this within the play of Julius Caesar. Some of the characters that Shakespeare wrote about were Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Marcus Brutus, and Caius Cassius. Shakespeare gave these characters deeper meanings throughout the play. Each character had a theme that developed around them and was woven into the book. Caesar was a very important character, as he was one of the main characters. He was a prominent leader in Rome and was in the Roman senate. Shakespeare suggests that life is not always fair through the leader of Rome and politician Julius Caesar.
According to Merriam-Webster and Literary Terms a villain is a deliberate scoundrel or criminal who plots to somehow cause harm or ruin to another character. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Cassius is the villain because he does not admit what he is doing is wrong. He kills Caesar and gets other people to help him do so and the only way he can have a reputation is by having power.
“Leadership is an opportunity to serve. It is not a trumpet call to self-importance”(Donald Walters). Julius Caesar was a ruler loved by most people. He was their leader longer than Rome's past leaders and eventually wanted the crown but never showed the people he wanted it. The people and Senate were ready to crown Caesar, but some people were jealous or scared of the power he cold possess if he had the crown. As a result, a group of people formed a conspiracy to assassinate Caesar. Along the story, Caesar was given many warnings about him going to the Senate, which is the place he will die. William Shakespeare’s play of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is centered around Julius Caesar, who is so headstrong on his pride and judgement that he
Of all female characters in Shakespeare, few possess the vigor and assertion that Portia demonstrates in Shakespeare’s classic political tragedy, Julius Caesar. Overshadowed by all of the chaos and unrest in the life of our protagonist, Brutus, a complex emotional and ethical journey is taking place, represented by Portia, Brutus’s wife. Portia exists in the text to shed light and understanding on an arch that isn’t always as apparent to the audience. In production of the play, directors, designer, and actors can make hugely influential choices in order to mold this humble plot device into a story as worthy of notice as the violence and gore that often overtakes it.
William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is a tragedy, set during the rise of the Roman Empire and is about the murder of Julius Caesar and how it affects Rome. Julius Caesar, a Roman general, is killed by conspirators. Brutus, a supporter of the Roman Republic, he betrays Caesar by murdering him. Cassius, an instigator to the killing of Caesar, manipulates Brutus into killing Caesar. Julius Caesar is murdered by Brutus, Cassius and other Roman senators due to them assuming that he would dictate Rome. Because of them killing Caesar, Brutus goes through a deep psychological change. Brutus goes there an internal struggle that ultimately leads to his death.
Hindsight is 20/20, as the saying goes, and in the case of the conspirators in the assassination of Julius Caesar and, the Swedish despot, Gustav III, they are clearly a testament to the proverb, as history details. To clarify, both the Roman de facto dictator, Julius Caesar and the odd-defying, Swedish king, Gustav III were so alike in their reigns to even their assassinations, in which the intriguers were alike from their character to even the folly of their acts. Only far after can the assassins see, through somewhat of a historian's perspective, the error of their short-sight; which, through comparing and contrasting, will provide an excellent scope to view the unfolding of the events surrounding these monarchs deaths. Namely, there is
In Julius Caesar the main idea was to show the reader how Julius Caesar was this powerful Roman wanting to rule the country of Rome. His ambitions lead him to a major downfall. Julius Caesar had many friends and followers but not everyone agreed with what he had plan for Rome. Brutus and Cassius were Julius Caesar’s closest friends that turned the table on him. Cassius had made his mind that caesar should not live to be crown. Cassius has brought Brutus into his great plan to kill Julius Caesar. After a long time of Cassius persuading Brutus he final decided to join the conspirators. Brutus believes that if Caesar becomes crowned then Rome will never be the same, he will help kill caesar for the good of Rome. Brutus quickly became the leader of the conspirators because they see him as an honorable man, someone that will do anything for his country. In the William shakespeare of Julius Caesar, the most outstanding character appears to be Brutus who has impacted his country very strongly by his patriotism.
Shakespeare adds complexity to his characters. One way that he does this is by giving his characters opposing desires and hesitation before following through with actions. Scholar L. J. Simmons talks about Brutus’ mindset claiming, “Brutus framed his mode of life and action ‘by the rules of virtue and study of Philosophy’” (Simmons 62). Brutus shows hesitation and doubt when deciding whether or not to kill Caesar. On one hand, Brutus acknowledges that killing his friend is morally wrong and that the conspirators are assassinating Caesar because they are envious of him. When Cassius first mentioned the idea of assassinating Caesar, Brutus replied “How I have thought of this and of these times, /I shall recount hereafter; for this present, /I would not, so with love I might entreat you, /Be any further moved. What you have said /I will consider; what you have to say /I will with patience hear, and find a time” (Shakespeare 1, 2, 164-169). Another part of Brutus wants to kill Caesar because he realizes that if Caesar is crowned king, it will be the end of the democracy in Rome and Caesar could corrupt Rome. Brutus even claims that “...He [Caesar] would be crown 'd: /How that
Every aspect of Shakespearean drama depends ultimately on language” (Keach 253). In the play Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare uses metals to add emphasis to the play. These references to metal are used in the play as a form of characterization, as a way to establish the mood, and as a way to explain the ideas of the characters. The characterization helps the audience to have a better understanding of the characters and their personalities, the mood further explains what the characters are feeling in relation to Caesar and his death, and they emphasize and explain the ideas that are driving the characters to act and speak.
Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, set in the first century BCE, explores the conflicts of Caesar, Brutus and Cassius, as well as Antony as they vie for power during the age of Classical Rome. Caesar’s ambition is often times questioned and he labeled as a tyrant on multiple occasions, causing many conspirators to rise up against him. However, Caesar is presented with multiple warnings and omens to caution him of his impending death. Throughout his play, Shakespeare uses the repetition of Caesar overlooking these omens and supernatural events to establish Caesar’ s arrogance and insensibility as a leader.
"He can inspire a group only if he himself is filled with confidence and hope of success."-Floyd V. Filson. These words describe the mindset of the character Antony, in the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, because of the time he had to come out and convince a ginormous crowd to abandon the conspirators. To do this he needed to show the crowd in any positive or negative way, that he was a desirable leader. Therefore, throughout the acts, Antony shows his leadership skills that soon takes over the crowd, as well as the streets of Rome.
F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “Show me a hero and I’ll give write you a tragedy.” Since Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar Is a tragedy, this quote relates directly to it, being a tragedy that has heroes in it, or those that appear to be heroes. One element of tragedies is that in the cast, there is almost always a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a hero, usually a protagonist, that has some sort of fatal flaw that is the character’s downfall. However, there are two different tragic heroes in the play Julius Caesar. So, it may be a possibility that there are two different protagonists, or one be the protagonist over the other, but, on top of this, do the protagonists determine the title of the play?

In Julius Caesar, Caesar faces this very dilemma, when the chance of being crowned king is obstructed by many disastrous signs and warnings. During a feast Caesar is offered the crown, the chance to rule Rome, but refuses. Caius Cassius and Marcus Brutus, senators of Rome are suspicious of Caesar’s reactions to the power he holds in the Republic. They fear he will accept offers to become the Emperor.
