Prime Minister’s Problem: Justin Trudeau’s Conflict of Interest
A free private vacation to the Bahamas with your family and friends, sounds almost too good to be true, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently found this out first hand. After returning from his luxurious holiday on Aga Khan’s private Bahamas island in January 2017, the media outlets were booming with many articles criticizing his actions and divulging the public with the Conflict of Interest Act. One passage in particular had many people in a frenzy, “Rule 12 in the Act states, “No minister of the Crown, minister of state or parliamentary secretary, no member of his or her family and no ministerial adviser or ministerial staff shall accept travel on non-commercial chartered

It certainly could. However, the Prime Minister has a vast amount of time and opportunity to apologize and make up for a simple avoidable mistake. In addition, Trudeau now has the information and knowledge to prevent making related mistakes in the future. Now, it is worth noting that this report is not in any way questioning Justin Trudeau’s Prime Ministerial ability or saying he should not be the Prime Minister of Canada; however, what should be captured is the potential severity that a conflict of interest issue can cause. Because Justin Trudeau and Aga Khan have association, this creates the perfect scenario for political bribery, such as a free vacation, in exchange for future political consideration. Justin Trudeau must recognize his position as Prime Minister of Canada and take responsibility and establish a boundary between his role as Prime Minister and his personal life outside Parliament Hill. Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister of Canada twenty-four hours a day and everywhere he goes. It is imperative he separates his personal life from his responsibilities as Prime Minister. Even if his “friends” and colleagues want to provide him a complimentary service, it is a service he must respectfully
This article talks about Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and his vow to bring Canadians together as one and to make Canada an open, confident and hopeful country. At a rally in Brampton, Ontario, he criticizes Stephen Harper’s “small and fearful” vision of Canada and promises to change that. Trudeau uses a direct quote of Franklin Roosevelt (“We have nothing to fear but fear itself”) to compare Harper’s plan for Canada saying that he has nothing to offer us but fear. Trudeau states that it’s a prime minister’s job to build Canadians up and together, not to tear us apart. Nearly 5 000 supporters attended the rally and it ironically took place in Brampton because it is one of Canada’s most ethnically diverse cities. Half of the population are immigrants
Harper used the weak liberal leaders to ensure he stayed in power and he was able to ensure that a coalition did not happen between the Liberals, New Democrats and the Bloc Quebecois. He remained strong when the possibility of his government being replaced by a coalition almost happened, he was successful by saying that the deal the liberals made was “‘a betrayal of the voters of this country… a betrayal of the best interests of our economy… a betrayal of the best interests of our country. And we will fight it with every means that we have’” (223). Harper kept his opponents divided and he showed Canadians that he was not going anywhere. Finally, he showed leadership after winning a majority by promising “‘major reforms’ in ‘a whole range of areas’ to ‘secure the sustainability of our key programs… for a generation to come’” (364). This showed that he was just getting started. Stephen Harper’s leadership style was to remain a strong leader while making as few headlines as possible. Harper did not like making headlines, “This helps explain why he has lasted. He lies low because he wants to last” (291). Harper was an effective leader because he knew how to keep a low profile which limited the amount of bad

It is inarguable that people are talking about Canada since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau assumed office just a few months ago. In just over four months, the media-friendly, question-taking and selfies-giving Trudeau has managed to seemingly make Canada cool on the world stage, using the increased spotlight to highlight the merits of diplomacy and engagement, including on issues such as climate change, respect for diversity and human rights and international peace.
Pierre was known to be “The best politician of Canada” both at home and abroad. Throughout his career he had many different jobs such as a Journalist, Screenwriter, Politician, Author, Professor, Actor, Jurist and not to mention Prime minister of Canada, throughout his educational life he gained the skills and knowledge for all these jobs and many more that could have come.
Justin Trudeau is the current Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the country’s Liberal Party. Elected in 2015, Trudeau has proven himself a respectable leader both domestically and internationally. He is strongly supported by Canadians, Americans, and other world leaders. The Prime Minister of Canada has demonstrated his ability to lead, his warm-hearted attitude, and his willingness to stick by his morals.
The Canadian government should also be looking into patching up their mistakes because they could very well happen again. Especially with what is currently happening in the world concerning the Syrian refugees. Of course the Canadian government isn’t the same as how it was 100 years ago, but if something were to happen involving the Canadian government treating these immigrants unfairly or wrong, it would prove that they haven’t
The three main important facts in this article are, Jacques Corriveau is getting charged for fraud, bribery, and a program made by the liberals to successfully help Canada’s appearance in Quebec. Jacques Corriveau was also charged with “money laundering.’’ Jacques Corriveau illegally made $8 million which was going to be used for the sponsorship but never happened. But there's claims being made that he just took that money for himself. The federal liberal party is getting upset at Justin Trudeau because, Justin Trudeau’s allowing non federal politicians to join the liberal party in Quebec. Meanwhile, these non politicians are setting a bad example on the Liberal Party by having previous scandals over the past few years which doesn’t look good
The largest moral and legal issue that is applicable to both cases as well as most other scandals and affairs in the government is a lack of transparency (Aucoin, 2006). In the Pacific scandal, Macdonald went behind the backs of the people of Canada and many people in his government and wrongly sold the rights to the railway. This demonstrates a lack of transparency because the public was unaware of what he was doing. It is unquestionably crucial to our democratic system that the public has unwavering faith in their leader who can be trusted to uphold a certain degree of morality. There was also a lack of transparency in the Sponsorship scandal because Chretien chose to direct the program from the PMO (Prime Ministers Office) and bypassed the procedures that the Deputy Minister of Public Works and Governmental Services Canada (PWGSC) generally are expected to follow (Aucoin, 2006). Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of PWGSC failed to provide any safeguards that would prevent the misuse of the funds in the program (Aucoin, 2006). Due to blatant lack of administrative control, it is not surprising that a scandal
Some of those challenges still impact our society today. To make up for what the Canadian government has done in the past, Justin Trudeau is giving Indians money which is coming out of our taxes. Doing this shows responsibility and recognition of the things that were intended to do good, but instead ended up ruining a culture. We have given back their land rights as well. Where us Canadians need to draw for tags in order to fish or hunt, Aboriginal People are allowed to take as much as they want, wherever they want because it is part of their culture and survival. When Canadians want to go to post secondary school, we have to pay thousands of dollars. Whereas Aboriginals get a huge portion of their of their education subsidized. The Canadian
This political study will define the future effect of the election of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in terms of the Canadian foreign policy in the restructuring of military intervention in foreign affairs and the pro-trade globalization mandates of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Trudeau’s election defines the overriding political agenda of the Liberal Party of Canada to stop ineffective bombing missions in Syria and Iraq, yet to maintain special forces troops to better manage the war against ISIS. More so, Trudeau supports the globalization of Canadian trade by promoting the positive effects of the TPP to promote international growth in trade. These aspects of the new Liberal government are vital aspects of as greater focus on improved economic security and a declining approach to pro-American bombing campaigns as a form of military interventionism in foreign affairs. In essence, a political analysis of the future effects of the Liberal Party of Canada under PM Trudeau will define the restructuring of military intervention in Iraq and Syria and the increased focus on international trade under the guidelines of the TPP in foreign policy.
While the multicultural policy in Canada is in some ways out of date, the policy still remains a crucial aspect of Canadian identity and is still in many ways relevant to the values of the country and the people living within it. The policy was originally put in place to ensure that groups in Canada who were not French or British felt that they were welcomed in Canada, as everyone in Canada should feel free to be whatever culture they identify with, not pressured to fit in with the majority. The original intention of the multicultural policy, which was out in place by Pierre Trudeau was to allow people to celebrate their culture without getting discriminated. Multiculturalism has developed immensely since the policy has been put in place, however,
The 2015 Canadian election was one of great importance that showcased a changing of guard in the Canadian political context. Key issues in this election were; Bill c-21, multiculturalism, the refugee crisis, Marijuana legislation, war on terror and ISIS, and environmental policies. Although these are all pinnacle matters, one of the most pressing issue was economic policies. Economics policy is what is commonly seen as the commons man’s issues and what might win most people over in an election cycle. Justin Trudeau and Stephen harper were the campaigns largest attractions Harper representing the fiscal conservatives and Trudeau representing the big deficit spending policies of the Liberals, with largely different economic views that would
The Fredericton chapter of the Council of Canadians meet on the first Wednesday of every month, at 7pm at the Conserver House on St. Johns Street in Fredericton, New Brunswick; they discuss issues that are occurring within Fredericton and the surrounding areas of New Brunswick. The Council of Canadians are a nationwide group, consisting of over 100,000 members, within 60 chapters all across Canada. They aided the shale gas protesters, and also sent 1,000 pairs of headphones down to the protesters at Standing Rock, because the police were blasting them with loud sound guns. Each meeting, the Council of Canadians devise an agenda to discuss; this meeting consisted of issues surrounding the Standing Rock protest, government plans for Mount Carleton,
I feel that the parliament and legislature should have the last word in deciding a case, and I have many reasons to support it. First, being that the Canadian Government is entrenched in the Canadian Charter of rights and freedoms. When Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, made sure that the Charter was stuck to the future laws of government, it made sure that every canadian citizen has rights and freedoms, including legal rights. The legislatures and parliament would have to consider everything included in the Charter. Which made sure that the testimony used against suspects were realistic. An additional support to my point, is because we voted for our own government to take power. That would result in making sure that the Parliament will be fair
