There isn’t one single reality television show or reality t.v. show star in particular that is stereotyped to a typical standard, though as reality television stars gain more popularity and try to build their brands, to have the perfect body is often the stereotype that all genders go through. Transsexual and transgendered celebrities have also spoke about the necessity to display the perfect body because they were born men, and have to exceed women, when speaking about beauty, just to fit in. Everyone loves to use the Kardashians as an example so why not. Kim Kardashian from Keeping Up With The Kardashians is known for her “perfect hour glass figure” with large breasts, a tiny waist, and bigger-than-average booty (and yes I said booty!). She is regarded as many for having the perfect body, and other women have felt the pressure to emulate her body in order to achieve the same vanity appeal.

Perceptions are pervasive in society and can prompt lethal repercussions. These include relationship breakup, privation of belonging and obviates progression. The film ‘Bran Nue Dae’ explores perceptions such as alcoholic, on drugs, unhygienic, destitute, belonging nowhere and a nuisance to society that associate with indigenous Australians. Albeit some of these statements are true, this is NOT the case for all. Believe it or not, there are people in society that have escaped from these circle of perceptions and have been able to live a ‘typical’ life. It is as a result of this, to never make perceptions true or reality.

In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson used stereotypes throughout the book. Stereotypes the school into groups Like the Jocks, Cheerleaders, marthas and goths, I see those same stereotypes in the movie Mean Girls.

When I was only a little girl, I had been told that true beauty came from within. Yet as I grew up, I noticed that looks mattered. From their attractiveness, race, age, or gender, anyone’s image was always up for scrutiny. Under those circumstances, I grew up thinking that if people were to judge me based on my appearance, that I should judge them the same way. Though, as I became older, I at some point learned that how a person looked wasn’t always in their range of control. A person simply isn’t born with the choice of picking what they look like, nor are they born with the choice of having a genetic disorder or disease. In that case, I believe that nobody should be defined purely based on what they look like.

The two ads I chose were Live Irrésistible, a perfume by Givenchy from Elle magazine and TH Bold, a cologne by Tommy Hilfiger from Men’s Health magazine. According to Susan Bordo, in all most all ads “men act and women appear” and these two ads represents just that. Elle is a magazine for women between the ages 16-30, who have an interest in fashion and the latest trends. While, Men’s Health magazine targets men between the ages 18-30, who have an interest in their health and sex lives.

The fascination of television shows such as American Idol and The Voice, has grabbed the attention of people all over as they watch others attempt to become the next big music icon. In fact, the television show industry has shown that appearance and personality have a huge effect towards successful careers. Musicians today really worry about trying to stand out as different. As they say, looks can be deceiving, but aside of their incredible singing, what makes some of them so special? Is it his or her style, appearance, or personality?
