In the 1900s, segregation and male dominance were a big part of American Society. African American women were often underestimated as well as neglected of their respect and authority. Ethel Hedgeman, who was a student at Howard University, believed that it was essential to create an organization for a group of women who were willing to use their talents and strengths for the benefit of others, but at the same time learn to value and respect themselves. She envisioned that this group would focus on interaction, encouragement, and ethical growth between the members, and that is exactly what Alpha Kappa Alpha has done ever since she created it. In 1908, AKA also known as the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first African American sorority was created. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha communicate and express their common ideas and goals in their own unique ways.

If their action produces or will produce for them a greater outcome of good, versus evil in the long hall than any other alternative, than that action is the right one to act on, and the individual should take that to be a moral act. My interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, started a long time ago, in fact when my first interest was peaked I wasn’t even able to pursue my interest as I was still in high school. I was able to participate in several of the “groups” within Alpha Kappa Sorority Inc., such as the “Roses” and the “Pearls”.
Researcher John Swales in “ The Concept of Discourse Community” explains that there are six characteristics that need to be identified for a group of people to be a discourse community. According to Swales, there are six characteristics that make up a discourse community. They are common public goals, mechanisms of intercommunication among members, participatory mechanisms to provide information and feedback, utilizing one or more genres in communication, a specific lexis, and a threshold level of members with a degree of relevant content and discourse expertise (220-222). Discourse is in communities are all around us.

Spreading the word of the opportunities that Oklahoma State offers has a large impact on the number of students that attend this university. The goal for Kappa’s recruitment process at Illinois State would be to have about 300 women participate in the Meet & Greets. Once Meet & Greets are completed, Kappa will extend bids to a select number of women. Our goal is to extend bids to at least 145 women or equal to the chapter total as set by Illinois State’s College Panhellenic Council at the beginning of the fall 2018 semester. Our goal is to be at average chapter size within one year of installing the chapter. From the moment we arrive on campus, we intend to work with the College Panhellenic Council to realize its goals and positively contribute to the Panhellenic community. Those who accept bids will then go through Formal Pledging to officially become new members. The Coordinator of Chapter Development, advisers and area alumna volunteers will further support these efforts.
Chapter members are encouraged to participate and lead in the community as well as support other campus organizations and initiatives. At the end of each year, with support from chapter advisers and the New Chapter Support Team, the chapter will evaluate its performance in the Five Star Program. In addition, members will discuss their desired goals for the upcoming year and determine a strategy to best meet them. We encourage the chapter to be a model chapter at Adelphi and strive to consistently achieve four-star or five-star recognition. 4.
