Knife crime in the UK
Extent of knife crime in the UK:
An increasing issue in the United Kingdom is knife crime. According to the office for national statistics (ONS) carrying a knife or a sharp instrument has risen by 10% and sexual knife assaults gone up 28%.
36% of murders in scotland (34 cases) the method of killing was by a sharp instrument.
Although there has been a recorded drop in homicide figures on the 13th December 2010, Scottish police forces recorded 78 homicides for the year 2009/10, representing a 10 year low.
Knives continue to play a significant part in the homicide figures. In 2010, 35 people were killed by sharp instruments, representing 44% of the homicides in Scotland, but how do present times compare to the past. Scotland has always had a strong knife culture, for example the razor gangs in glasgow.
The Glasgow razor gang were violent gangs that existed in the Southside of Glasgow in the late 1920s and 1930s, named for their weapon of choice. I do not believe the extent of knife crime is as significant as before in the 20’s and 30’s, but as the statistic show there is a rise in knife crime.
Reason people carry knives:
A main reason people carry knives is because of how accessible they are you can buy knives anywhere, for example your local supermarket. Most of the time you don’t

Which is a life changing amount of time. Also a criminal record can affect your future forever. Another consequence of carrying a knife is the effect on your loved ones. No parent or grandparent can accept the fact that their child or grandchild is going to prison. It is also a very long time being away from a loved one. My final effect of knife crime is the consequences it has on your future. Having a criminal record can prevent you from travelling, stops you doing certain jobs and make very hard to get into college or
How do the homicide rates or deaths in warfare from the past compare to today?
The second part will compare two journal articles with the same subject matter “knife crime” however, the research has been conducted using different methodologies, positivism, a macro quantitive objective and interpretivism, a micro qualitative subjective.
Criminals will find just about anything to use as a weapon. Guns are not the only thing used for a homicide or any other crime. Guns are definitely an option, but if a criminal wants to commit a crime they will find a way to do it even if it is not with a gun. There is so many weapons out there that can cause greater damage than a gun that are free to buy with little or no registration at all.
In deadly crimes, the type of weapon used has no effect on the fact that someone is still dead in the end. Many people have access to weapons, but few will ever actually use
On the contrary it is often used as an excuse or justification for a senseless murder, it is difficult to disprove in court due to a lack of definition of what is considered to be “threatening”, has increased in overall homicides and has increase
The author states why it is a good idea to carry a knife, we would have to be physically fit with good aim or skills if we were to carry a knife, But fighting against someone with a gun while the person has a knife the gun wins so it wouldn’t be able to protect the person. We would

1. According McGinty, Professor and Phd. at Johns Hopkins University, recent research by the University has shown that people who report having access to firearms are twice as likely to be a victim of homicide and three times more likely to commit
Homicide is the second leading cause of death for 10 to 24 year olds. Out of this number nearly 85% of these crimes are committed with a gun.
In 2010, 83.8% of 1,982 homicide victims were killed with a firearm (p. 88). In the same year, 38.8% of
On the other hand, in 1988, handguns killed 7 people in Great Britain, 19 in Sweden, 53 in
The United States has been a world leader in homicide for centuries. Indeed, “since the early 19th century ...[America has been] the most homicidal country in the Western world” and holds that title today (Kelley, 2009). In a 2007-2008 list of 31 nations, only two nations, Mexico and Chile, had higher homicide rates (Comparison, 2010). Nations with higher populations, such as India and China have fewer homicides (Comparison, 2010). Further, a nation such as Japan, which has a lower population but a higher population density then the United States, has one of the world’s lowest homicide rates (Comparison, 2010). Population size and density, therefore, cannot be the chief reasons for this nation’s higher homicide rates.
Movies show gangsters and thugs with butterfly knives (balisongs) which is what I like to collect and switch blades, however statistics show that a lot of knife crime, if not most, is committed with kitchen knives. Data presented to the British Parliamentary committee in 2008 showed that kitchen knives were used in logged crimes ten times more often than the next most common identified
