Throughout time, our world has endured many changes. With great turmoil during the 11th and 12th century, there was change at every corner. For Japan and Europe, it was a time of death, war, and destruction. This time was known as the Dark Ages or Middle Ages. After the fall of Rome, and the weakening of Japanese imperial court; both medieval societies essentially crumbled.

In medieval Japan Samurais armor (According to Doc D by Terry Bennett) had an arm with no armor or very light armor, the reason for this was Samurai specialized in projectile warfare, and Samurai armor stayed the same for the rest of the Samurai area. In Europe the Knights used chainmail armor for quite some time, that is until crossbows and longbows became common, they had to change to metal armor that could be 60 pounds making it hard to get up if they were knocked down. Knights were usually vassals who decided to fight for higher lords in exchange for protection. They were considered to be in the nobility class. They were usually just military officers. Knights were noblemen who rode on horseback and they followed the strict military code of chivalry, the code demanded that a knight was to obey his lord, to help people, be brave, show respect to women, and honor the church. Many of the good manners today come from the code of Chivalry.

At first knights and soldiers in the armies were of little social status. “Many knights in fact possessed little more than peasants” (Spielvogel 244). War was looked as kind of a barbaric act in the beginning and many knights could be found fighting each other. While some of this was tolerated, as they were seen as “defenders of society”, the Catholic Church decided that there should be some ground rules. At the start of the eleventh century, the church urged knights to take an oath to protect churches, and to not harm noncombatants. These rules allowed for battles to follow a civil path and to be carried out in a noble way.

In the past years, the job of a medieval knight was to fight battles for his lord. They used weapons like daggers, or longswords, and many more. Knights were also referred to as warriors and they are commonly expected to guard a castle. There are a couple of jobs from America today that best relates to the job of a medieval knight. For example, one job that best relates to a medieval knight is a soldier working in the military.

From approximately 1000 A.D. to 1600 A.D, knights and samurai were both professional warrior classes in Europe and Japan(Doc.1.) Knights were warriors who fought in Medieval times in Europe and were known for their code of honor and bravery. During this same time period, in Japan, samurai warriors provided protection and fought for their regions. These two groups were the warriors both living in feudalistic societies(OI.) Although the knights and samurai were both present in the world, the differences are greater than the similarities.

Knight’s armor is crucial as it protects and shows their social class. In the beginning he would use Sir Ector’s armor a very basic armor. As it was simply formed around Sir Ector’s body made of iron and had no detail what so ever. It was basic armor simply to get by in jousting, protecting the jouster from a blow. First, since every man expected to use weapons during the changing times of the Dark and Middle ages, accordingly the suit of armor provided essential body protection from the various weapons which were used in battle. Medieval armor and shields changed with new ideas, technologies, and different weapons all the time, so the suit of armor changed all the time. The parts of a suit of armor were a complex series of garments, chain mail, and iron plate for different body parts, such as leg armor, feet armor, arms, head armor, neck armor, and body armor. Even the knight's transportation had its own armor, the horse was afforded protection from lances and infantry weapons by steel plate boarding.

Knights were powerful warriors. There were many tasks for knights. Kindly, they honored and served their lords. Brave soldiers protected the land from their sinister enemies. The knights battled often and in battle they wore shiny armor and rode beautiful horses. The massive knights who rode huge horses and were clothed in astonishing armor plowed the foot soldiers. In archery and jousting tournaments, they practiced their combat skills.

Many people respected knights for their bravery and their heroic acts. All members looked up to the knights because of their bravery and relations with upper class citizens. Knights were in charge of protecting a lord or vassal as well, and for that reason they were highly respected (Nardo 31). The lords and Kings were the most important people in the Middle Ages, and anyone who would protect the, was greatly respected by all. These knights were models for everyone on their land (Smith, Andrew 2). Not only were they models and heroic figures for their jobs of protecting the lord and King, but they were also considered extremely brave and some even considered them heroes. Being a knight came with many advantages with the higher class citizens. By having relations with higher class citizens, knights were more likely to get a rich and upper class wife (Nardo 31). An upper class couple received many more be idiots for themselves, as well as their future heirs. They also received many other advantages from being a knight. Knights were able to live in or around castles that belonged to important figures. They also received a great deal of money and the respect of many from their social status in the Middle Ages (Nardo 29). The respect and advantages given with being a knight made it all worth

To be a knight, his fitness level had to be exceptional enough to last through a long, intense battle. Knights had to face a variety of challenges and were expected to handle them as any knight would. For example, some battles would last long periods of times, so these knights were expected to handle different weather changes, tiredness, and hungriness. The most important qualification that a knight had to have was modeling bravery due to the extreme battles that would be fought. Through these long battles, knights had to stay positive and not give up for what they are fighting for.

The first recognized group of knights evolved during the Crusades. There was several different groups of them including the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, the Order of the Temple of Solomon, and the Order of St. Lazarus. While they were all considered knights each group had a different task and set of goals to accomplish. Not all of them fought in battles and saved princesses and kingdoms. For example, the Order of St. Lazarus had the unique duty of protecting the leper hospitals. Knights served more like the police officers and army of today combined under one category. Knights are one of the most mistaken figures of the medieval era due to fairytales and over exaggerated fiction novels. When medieval knights roamed the earth, it was known that they were only human and, like humans, had faults. These knights did not always live up to the standards designated by society. However, in The Canterbury Tales, the knight is revealed as a character that would now be considered a knight in shining armor, a perfect role model in how he acts and what he does. Modern day people see them as chivalrous figures instead of their actual role as mounted cavalry soldiers. As time passes, the idea of what a knight is changes from a simple cavalry soldier to a specific type of behavior.
