The Korean War started when the communist North Koreans sent troops into the non communist South Koreans. When this happened North Korea fought back against them, to protect their freedom. When this happened the UN also came to help South Korea win the battle. This war took place from 1950-1953 after World War II and before the Vietnam War. The representatives from each country met for dinner, and started discussing ways they could have peace once again. All of the soldiers started celebrating that the war might be over, but that never happened, the two countries were willing to fight to the death to have total control over the penninsula. They never settled things, and the war lasted 2 more years. After 3 years of war everyone but North Korea had enough war, so the Soviets, the UN, and the Sourth Koreans signed a truce. That truce would divide the country in two and they would officially be two seperate countries. They also said that any acts of aggression from the North Koreans would not be tolerated. They said that all of the armies that signed it would be on high alert until total peace was restored. The two countries still haven't come to any agreements to this day. Although they haven't made any agreements, recently the current president of South Korea became the first president ever to cross from South Korea to North Korea. He walked into North Korea shook the North Korean's president's hand, then walked back. This was all on live television, he wanted the North Koreans to know that he wasn't afraid to meet them. This could be a sign that they will make peace someday, or he was just trying make a nice

The war was caused by the US trying to preserve the Democratic side of Korea, the south side. The Koreans were not happy, however, and the Viet Kong and North Korean soldiers fought tooth and nail to get the Americans out of the country. There was eventually an end to the war of course but not without lots of casualties on both sides and a hostile environment around the border of the two countries.

It should be noted that North Korea’s communist ally and veto holder, the Soviet Union, was absent from this meeting in protest of the communist China’s exclusion from the Security Council. A United Nations defense force led by the United States, came to the of South Korea and in a rapid counter-offensive, they were able to push the North Koreans back past the 38th parallel close to Yalu River along the border with China. Warnings from Communist China that it would intervene should UN forces push past the 38th parallel were ignored by UN Commanders and true to their word, the Chinese Intervened on behalf of the North pushing UN and ROK forces back to the 38th parallel. In 1953, the war ended with an armistice that restored the border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 4 Km wide buffer zone between the two Koreas (Edwards 2005).

Overshadowed by the previous, long and devastating Second World War, the Korean War became known by Canadian veterans as the "Forgotten War". After Japan's defeat in World War II, Korea was split into two parts, North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was occupied by the communist country of USSR while South Korea was held by the Americans and other democratic nations. War officially broke out on June 25, 1950, when the North Koreans assaulted across the country's division on the 38th Parallel with their men and artillery behind them. This conflict started when Communist North Korea, which was supported by the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea. The United States decides to help South Korea in the conflict because it is a democratic country. American troops that were stationed in Japan after WWII are sent to defend South Korea. This is a failure and troops are almost pushed off the peninsula but a counter attack, which was very risky, saves them. It allowed them to push North Korea back up to the Chinese border. This made China join the war on the communist side and push the American troops back to South Korea. This battle continued for several years unending in 1953 close to the original borders. Many died in this conflict but it proved the United states policy of containment was a success(Doc.

Soon enough it was liberated by both American and Soviet forces, the Soviets occupying the country north of the 38th Parallel, and the Americans south of it. After the war, neither the Koreans, Soviets, nor the Americans could agree on the country's government. This resulted in the foundation of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the south and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north (Ohn Chang-Il, 23). The fact that neither the States nor the Soviets were willing to compromise on anything was a prime factor in the separation of the Korean Peninsula.
