I decided to become a nurse in high school after exploring the many different opportunities within the medical field. I started my freshman year in high school and continued to take a course every year to expand my knowledge about taking care of others. I have always enjoyed being able to help others and put their needs above mine. I have experienced many opportunities of hands-on experience through job shadowing, my CNA rotations, and through my internship at Palmetto Health Baptist. After participating in the internship at Columbia Women’s Healthcare at Palmetto Health Baptist, I decided that I wanted to specialize in Labor & Delivery as a nurse. I was able to go to the hospital with the doctor I was interning and was able to watch the process
Being an Emergency Room nurse for 7 years and working as a traveling nurse in many different parts of the country has impacted my future and decision of going back to school. My personal career goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with specialization in pediatric critical care area, mainly pediatric emergency medicine. I have known since a very young age that I had a gift for working with children. My colleagues always call me the “pediatric nurse”. I feel it takes a very special type of person to work with pediatrics, and this is where my heart is. I chose to become a FNP to broaden my area of expertise and to leave multiple doors open to work in different areas. I have
I did not know much about the health care field then but in that moment, I felt as if the health care system failed since the day he was born. This experience made me become eager to be a part of making a difference in the health care world. The lack of managed care caused the life of my nephew, and for this my passion for Science and the need of helping others only manifested because of my experience. My aspirations were to become a Registered Nurse and specialize in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In my early college years, I also became a part of the UCLA team through an internship program. UCLA Care Extenders allowed me to gain valuable knowledge. As an intern, I did clinical rotations and was able to discover what takes place behind closed doors. However, what lead me into
For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse. I knew that I wanted to be a nurse I was just not sure of what kind of nurse, but as I got older I grew to love babies and kids more and more. It then hit me, that I wanted to be a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse (NICU). Being born prematurely, and knowing by hearing stories and reading about the NICU has shaped me even more to want to be a NICU nurse. I know that with being a NICU nurse involves a lot of time and dedication, but that does not matter. I am always asked " How are you going to be able to handle being a NICU nurse", which leads to the response of "I know that it will be hard, but someone has got to do it". I have always been told that it takes someone
After working as an NICU nurse for five years, I wanted to advance my career and started contemplating my direction. First, I wanted to have a sound scientific understanding of the diseases that I would take care of. I felt like my medical knowledge was a bit shallow when I was working as a nurse, because in nursing school the curriculum focused more on general nursing care than on the pathophysiology of each disease. I wanted to be more involved in direct medical care and in making decisions on patients’ treatment options. Second, I wanted to be a more independent health care professional and have dreamed of running my own business with schedule flexibility to balance life as a mom. Third, I realized that my skills might be more useful in
I have been a student at Leon high school since Pre-k year and in a couple of months I will be graduating from here. After graduation I plan to attend Tyler Junior College in hope of earning an associate’s degree in nursing as a licensed vocation nurse (LVN). After receiving my degree I would like to work at a clinic or the hospital in Tyler or Dallas. To help me achieve this goal I have prepared myself by taking three dual credit classes this year and a nursing class as a certified nurse’s assistant(CNA). In my nursing class I have complete hours in the classroom and certain hours working on the floor at Groesbeck LTC. This experience has helped me decide that being in the nursing field is really what I want to do. Contributing to the community I has
I’ve worked for DaVita dialysis for two years; before changing careers I worked in early childhood education for 8 years. I decided to make a career change because I didn’t feel in my heart that I was being challenging myself enough to my full potential. I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to help others. My mother has been an LPN for over 36 years, so I spent countless hours at her job at a hospital when I was growing up. I would spend time in the office of the her director of nurse and I would ask questions for days. I’ve always had a passion for healthcare, but, I was afraid of blood so decided that nursing was out the question for me. So I chose the business side of healthcare to focus on. I want to advance my career in healthcare.
In some point in time, during a person’s life they run into the question what do I want to be? They must find a career that they will enjoy or the time that they have spent in class and studying will be in vain. While doing research on the Georgia Career Information Center and from the constant idea throughout my life I have decided that I want to become a registered nurse. The type of work environment, the salary that the job provides and flexibility with work hours are all things that have drawn me to this occupation. I want to specialize in Neonatal. I have always enjoyed caring for people and making a difference to someone. When you become a nurse these are just some of the things that you are able to accomplish. Becoming a registered
Growing up around three female nurses in my family has sparked an interest in working in the medical field; being the introvert that I am, I decided that it was best to become a medical records field technician in Surprise Arizona. Being a big part of my life has I was growing up, my Nana and my two aunts Phyllis and Theresa all took upon the same career choice and became nurses. On February 14, 2012 I went with my Nana and my sister to the nursing home where my Nana works and passed out cookies for Valentine’s Day. While I was passing out cookies with my sister, I was able to see how the staff interacted with the patients and helped them if was needed, it made me realize that one day I would like to work somewhere in the medical field, but
Although it may sound cliché, ever since I was a little girl I had the desire to work in the medical field, whether it be a doctor or a nurse. The desire stemmed from listening to my aunt tell stories about operations that she had assisted in, or patients that she had seen and their perplexing ailments. I was never phased by blood, and watching how the human body worked was something that made me excited and eager to learn more. When I was first asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I proudly said, an anesthesiologist. Since that day, I’ve worked hard to reach each milestone that will help me get closer to my goal. My intended future goal is to become a CRNA, which requires the successful completion of my nursing degree.
The nurse I chose to interview has been a family friend for a while, as she has worked closely with my mother for several years. She is the first nurse I met when I decided I was interested in going into the nursing field, and she is actually the person who encouraged me to apply to Truman State University’s nursing program. I was confident that she would be able to share her capacity of nursing knowledge and wisdom with me when I asked if I could interview her. I will expand on our interview which took place in her office at work throughout the next couple of pages, and to keep confidentiality, I will allude to her by her initials, J.W.
I was advised that this would be the way to get experience and to find out if patient care is really what I wanted to do in life. After working a year doing in home patient care, I got offered and took a job working at Hershey Medical Center as a technician in the Emergency Department. This was the best learning experience and job that I could have asked for to prepare myself for the journey towards a nursing degree. I learned so much from the nurses and residents, and knew that I was making the right decision. Experiencing phlebotomy, being trained to perform EKG’s (electrocardiography), and helping in Level 1 traumas, I feel really prepared me and encouraged me to do what I always wanted to do, pursue my degree in nursing, and hopefully specialize in emergency
Becoming a labor and delivery nurse may be one of the most challenging things a person could go through. Having to learn how to balance personal life with great movements a person could do. Becoming a Labor and Delivery Nurse is the one thing that I have always wanted to be. Helping all the mothers to be, bring their newborn babies into the world. Bringing happiness to little families starting form. But, as all things, Labor and Delivery nurses need a good and proper education. There are many situations in which a nurse can be caught in. Also, there is a lot of training in which the nurses should accomplish. You see, there are many steps that a future RN should take to make all her dream come true.
Throughout my sister-in-law’s labor, I was by her side, coaching and encouraging her along the way. Being a mother myself, I knew what to expect during a birth, but now seeing the experience from a different point of view, it changed my life. Becoming a Registered Nurse is my goal, but I hope to one day work as a labor and delivery nurse. After marrying my husband and having children, I made the commitment to myself that once they started elementary school, I would begin working toward my goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. It has been 12 years since I graduated high school, so the fears and uncertainty of what to expect and if I could succeed almost stopped me from moving forward.
I've very adaptive to new technology such as programs used for online documentation and electronic MARS. Other registered staff in my unit often comes to me for problem solving and troubleshooting with our online documentation program. I always put my patients first and I take the time to listen to my patients & families, no matter how busy my schedule may be. I work well under pressure and in a solo or team environment. I strive to become more knowledgeable in nursing in order to provide the best care I can to my clients In order to excel at my profession and passion I need to do everything I can to make myself better. As part of that, I did not stop with Bachelors, I did my masters, then I did Medical-surgical certification & I am also certified preceptor, have certification from UCF. My upbringing developed my core beliefs of community, family, loyalty, compassion and honesty. It also taught me that all things worthwhile require hard work. I love being a nurse, but recognize my yearning for more. I love nursing and have enjoyed my time as a floor nurse although my work experiences are acutely based, I have observed the direct relation between primary and acute care. As a nurse primarily working with patients, I have observed how patient miseducation, miscommunication, and
It was on my very first day of Childbearing clinical, that a precipitous, natural delivery of a Hispanic woman surrounded by nurses sealed my fate. As I watched in awe from the corner while holding the woman’s son, I realized that I had to be a part of the maternal-infant field. Since graduating with my Bachelors in Science of Nursing, I have directed and dedicated my career in preparation for my ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife.
