A union is an organization of workers who join together in order to have a voice in improving their jobs and the quality of work within the organization. In many occasions, unions help employees of an organization negotiate pay, benefits, flexible hours and other work conditions that may arise. Unions have a role because some degree of conflict is inevitable between workers and management (Noe, 2003). In this paper, I will be discussing the impact of unions and labor relations within an organization. Labor Unions Labor unions represent workers interests and the collective bargaining process provides a way to manage the conflict (Noe, …show more content…
A union steward is actually an employee of the organization that is elected by the union members to represent them and investigate complaints and help them file grievances if an employee feels that his/her union contract was violated in any way. Union stewards will fight to avoid disciplinary action for the employee's behavior. Union officials and union stewards are voted in by the union members. One disadvantage of being part of a union is that the employee must pay to be represented by the union. Different unions have different pay rates. At Kaiser Permanente employees need to contribute 2% percent of his/her annual pay to the union. Union fees are usually withdrawn from the employee's paycheck on a bi-weekly basis. Labor Relations Labor relations purpose is to minimize costly employee and organization conflicts and try to always find a "win-win" solution to issues that arise. Labor relations strategies, negotiating contracts and administering contracts are the three levels of decision that are involved within labor relations. Kaiser Permanente is an organization that is successful in dealing with labor relations. In today's challenging
Labor unions are an organized association of employees who come together who would all like to better the relationship with their employer. They have power to impact things such as wages, job training and other work related issues. So why would employees want to start and organize a union? Well, one reason employees would want to start a union it’s usually because employees are dissatisfied with something in their job and they would like to fix it. The ‘things’ they would like to fix could range from something as basic as wages and to job security (Hunter 1).
Not only are there benefits for employees, but the employers themselves receive many advantages as well. The best benefits that employers receive is employee satisfaction. When being a part of a union needs and wants are met allowing people to become more satisfied with their job, with that satisfaction employees will be more willing to work harder for you. Not only will employees be willing to work harder for you, but you will also have less people leave their jobs or the ability to lose their say and position in the organization. With less turnovers of employees as a
Labor unions are an organization, organized for workers benefit of the workers rights and interests in the long run and while working. A question I am hoping to be able to answer by the end of this research paper is whether labor unions and organizations have a more political power or economical effect? Also find out all the different elements that are involved in the labor unions and why some tend to fail. This topic dialectic element is that some unions want certain benefits that can’t be possible for there line of work, it is seen as controversial on how much help a labor union can provide. According to one of my majors I am still deciding on it will affect me in the long run depending on what problems are not acknowledge. A primary research
Labor unions have been around ever since the industrial revolution in Europe when working conditions in factories were very low. The concepts introduced in this time by the labor unions have become ingrained in our culture here in America. While workers benefit when they join a union by being able to fight for higher wages and better working conditions, these benefits that the unions get often “come at the expense of consumers, nonunion workers, the jobless, taxpayers, and owners of corporations” (Reynolds). Unions, while once playing a very beneficial role in history, are no longer all that necessary and may even be hurting all those outside of the union workers that they help.
Are you guaranteed a pension after your retirement? Union workers are more likely assured a pension when they choose to go into retirement. Union jobs allow for a secure life for single parent homes with children that need a stable job and good benefits. Union jobs allow for higher wages for employees. Union members have the benefit to join as a collective power and go on strike if they feel things are going wrong or unfair in their business.
The companies and industries that have tension between the employees and employers benefit from collective bargaining. Although the strong unions can impair market prices and strain the economy, I believe they have the best interest of the employees and ethical intent. Times have changed since the unionization boom in the 19th century. Global competition has caused the unions to compromise on the labor contracts. There have been three primary waves of American unionization. The first wave brought gains to the workers while providing stable production. The second wave responded to the downfall of that system by highlighting employer opposition, union decline, and strategic choice. The third wave or present wave of American industrial
This is when a group of staff or workers is formed into a labor union. These unions play a big role in the firm as they can talk about issues between each other. An example is when there is a problem with the staffs pay amount of even the working conditions.

Labor Unions otherwise called Trade Unions can have a tremendous effect on the employee-employer relationship. Employers have different positions regarding labor unions. Some are opposed to unions and resist organizing campaigns, some remain neutral others are pro-unions and encourage the partnership. Environments where employers are opposed to unions and or where active organizing campaigns exist can become hostile

A labor union in an organization of people who work to protect workers and give them rights. A labor union is between its members and the company that employs them. The main purpose of labor unions is to give workers the power to negotiate for more favorable working conditions and other benefits through collective bargaining. Collective bargaining is the heart and soul of labor unions. Collective bargaining can occur when a group of people band together to increase its negotiating power (Langford 1). For example, if a worker encounters an issue about safety within the company he or she can involve the labor union. There is a better chance for a company to change if a group expresses concern rather than one individual. This leads me to the difference
Unions contain members: workers within the certain industry at hand, as well as higher-level members that work to provide the link between employee and employer, through dispute resolution, and negotiation of enterprise agreements. Unions exist to serve as a large body that has the workers best interest in mind, so as to prevent large businesses and corporations from exploiting workers in their sector, and provide the workers with the best conditions.
Labor unions established to funding staffs equal trading power with their managers, who usually had the ability to completely set the terms and conditions of work and salary. Unions show labors within a given industry in discussions with their managers. Since the union includes a group of labors, it has a greater voice than if labors were dealing with managers individually.
Labor Unions have become an important factor in our industries. For many years, labor unions have served as the main voice of the workers to their employers. The continuous effort of labor unions in helping the laborers ensure their rights in their jobs, acquire all the benefits they need and to eliminate the injustice experienced by workers in their workplace is still an ongoing process. In order to understand labor unions in general, knowing the roots of it is the best way to start.
