This quote is said after Macbeth kills Duncan, Macbeth brings the daggers back and Lady Macbeth believes Macbeth is a fool. She goes and gets the job done by rubbing blood on the guards by herself. She then says this quote and it reveals her true personality. Macbeth is reflecting on what he has done because he feels guilty; Lady Macbeth is implying that she would be ashamed if her heart was to be as weak and caring as his. This quote is important because it reveals both Lady Macbeths and Macbeth’s character. Lady Macbeth is evil, clever and heartless. Macbeth on the other hand is kind, caring and gentle. This quote follows the theme of masculinity because Lady Macbeth is questioning Macbeth’s manhood by asking him why he is so pure. Macbeth feels that all the water in the world cannot wash away Duncan’s blood from his hands but Lady Macbeth tells him that a little wash will do the job. Lady Macbeth has masculine traits because she comes up with the plan to murder Duncan and she smears blood on the guards. Lady Macbeth takes advantage of Macbeth; he does anything she tells him to do. Lady Macbeth controls Macbeth like a puppet. Shakespeare uses the literary device of imagery in this passage. As Lady Macbeth states my hands are of your colour, this creates an image of bloody hands. Throughout this quote there is an image displayed of Lady Macbeth controlling Macbeth as a puppet. This is important because it
Fate and prediction have played a big part of Macbeth and has persuaded him to become evil and the “Brave” Macbeth had died out as soon as he meets the witches’ and they tell him that his fate is to become the thane of Cawdor and soon become king; “All hail, Macbeth hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!” “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”. Macbeth does not know yet that the Thane of Cawdor had betrayed the king and went against him also he is being stripped of his Thaneship and is being executed, so he was surprised when the witches’ said that. Macbeth at first did not believe in his fate but when he gets the rob to be Thane of Cawdor he starts to believe his fate and then his mind skips to becoming king and killing Duncan this shows
David Rosenberg once stated that “hope is a tree sitting on a mountain where the grass don’t grow ” . This quote relates to Macbeth because he hopes things that never lasts forever even if he tries no matter way . Lady Macbeth influenced Macbeth to carry out evil activities.
In the play Macbeth Macbeth is fueled by power and every decision he makes is to gain more power. When the witches prophesize that he will become king power is all he can think about. He begins to lose his sanity in order to gain power and control over everything. When Lady Macbeth hears of Macbeth’s meeting with the witches she begins plotting the death of Duncan in order to get her and Macbeth power. It’s easy to see power has made her think this way when she says, “ hie thee hither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear and chastise with the valor of my tongue all that impedes thee from the golden round” (1.5.15-8). This quote shows that Lady Macbeth thinks Macbeth wants to be king, but isn’t willing to do what is necessary to get. Her
Macbeth is confused as he is arguing with himself on what he should do. He states reasons not to kill Duncan, because Macbeth is his noble kinsmen and the act would bring dishonor. However, he also states reason why he should kill him, because Macbeth will then become king and fulfill the witches ' fortune. Lady Macbeth, who appears in the beginning as the driving force for the murder of King Duncan, also develops internal conflict. At first, Lady Macbeth seems to be a woman of extreme confidence and will. But, as situations become more and more unstable in the play, guilt develops inside her. For instance, she exclaims; "Wash your hands. Put on your nightgown. / Look not so pale. I tell you again, Banquo 's / Burried; he cannot come out on 's grave" (Shakespeare V, ii, 65-67). Lady Macbeth sleepwalks and frets about her evil wrongdoings because she is extremely guilty of her influence on Macbeth to commit the murder. Lady Macbeth reacts emotionally and dwells on her actions as guilt eats at her soul.
Macbeth shows his desire for power, he was friendly to Banquo before he became the king, but after he became the king, he let three murderers to kill Banquo and his son. “So is he mine, and is such bloody distance That every minute of his being thrusts against my near ‘st of life”(3.1 line 116-118). Macbeth sent three murderers to kill Banquo and his son since they ran away. All he thinks about is to kill more people in order to gain more power. Macbeth didn’t just kill Banquo only, he also killed Macduff’s whole family. “Murderer. What your egg! Stabbing him. Young fry of treachery! Son. He has killed me, mother: Run away, I pray you”(4.3 line 84-87). He killed Macduff’s whole family, he just wanted to make sure he doesn’t lose his power, so he just killed anyone who against him, he’s obsessed with his power, he never cares about breaking other people’s family.
Of course, we know that Macbeth (with some encouragement from his wife) does murder Duncan.
Fleance does not return back to Macbeth’s castle shows that he has control over his own fate by opposing to the future that the witches had seen in their prophecy. “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” (act1 scene3 line 70) In the beginning of the play the witches had foretell Banquo that his sons will become the king. Macbeth strongly believes in the witches prophecy. He commits murder against Banquo and Fleance in order to fight against the destiny that the witches had prophesied. “Thou may ’st revenge —O slave!”(act scene line) Banquo urges Fleance to escape and someday to take revenge of this gory tragedy. The reader expects Fleance to return to Macbeth’s castle to take revenge by murdering Macbeth similarly like he had done to his father. Though, the reader loses where he had fled in the story after he had escaped from that scene. This may show that he would not become the king. As the witches recite in the beginning of the play. “Fair is foul, foul is fair”(act scene line), Macbeth acts as what the witches had said. He is brainwashed by the evil spirits, he has no more control over himself. He believes that he is doing the right thing but he is actually trapping himself in a difficult situation. Although, both Banquo and Fleance opposes to this
Visualize being in MacBeth’s place, you are announced Thane of Cawdor after your heroic leadership on the battlefield, why would you thirst for a higher rank? Although you may be content with your position, there are many reasons why you would want more power. Your rank becomes very close to that of a king, so you decide to go for it, after all, all you have to do to be king is to kill Duncan. As your sight of kingship would become realistic, your rapacity grows, and you start making nefarious decisions that would affect your disposition. As an effect of your changed mindset, your nobles start to become suspicious that you are deranged. Little do they know they are all pawns in your game of life and your scheme to become king is going impeccably
From the beginning, Lady Macbeth is seen as greedy and prepared to do what her husband will not in order to get what she believes they are destined for. She is more willing to get blood on her hands, even in the most literal sense, so Macbeth will become king and she be the queen of Scotland. To make sure the king's assassination will not trace back to Lady Macbeth and her husband, Lady Macbeth says to her husband, " Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead are only like pictures. It is the eye of childhood that's afraid of a painted devil. If he bleeds, I'll smear the faces of the grooms with it, because it must seem that they are guilty" (Act 2 Scene 2) Lady Macbeth's greediness led her to convince Macbeth to kill, and her to convict others of murder by spreading blood. The cycle of her greed leading to blood spilling, and leading to an increase in power throughout the play had terrible consequences for her mind though. After Macbeth
Through the play Macbeth’s mental state slowly deteriorates over time starting with being given The task to kill Duncan that’s when his suffering begins this is the start where Macbeth begins to Feel conflicted and whether he should go through it, he later begins to hallucinate a dagger as he Panics more, after he successfully killed King Duncan shortly afterwards he slowly begins to be Consume from guilt preventing him from sleeping properly. His wife continues to taunt him Making fun of him for not being a man lowering his pride as she keeps insulting him for how Pathetic he is further adding to his mental suffering he finally snaps when he sees the ghost of Banquo haunting him after he sent murderers to kill him seeing Banquo
Through literature heroes and villains have always been read about. This is about a man who can be seen as a villain taking over a country and the original king’s son takes back his crown. Macbeth kills the king of Scotland to become king and ultimately Macbeth is killed and the rightful heir to the crown takes over. Macbeth in this play starts out not wanting to hurt the king or anyone but ends up killing the king, Banquo, and Macduff’s family.
This quote proves that Lady Macbeth is a cold, mean human. When she says, “he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done ‘t” she means that if Duncan hadn’t reminded her of her father, she would have killed him herself, just to have Macbeth be the King. What is even more striking about this
After the murder, Macbeth returns with the daggers and Lady Macbeth insists he take back the daggers to make it look like the grooms committed the murder. Macbeth does not want to return because he is fearful to see what he had done so Lady Macbeth is forced to return the daggers herself. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth meet in the courtyard to wash off the blood and he complains that the blood won’t come off his hands. Lady Macbeth says, “My hands are of your colour, but I shame / To wear a heart so white”.
Lady Macbeth is a very complex character in Macbeth, and is a great example of the theme put across by Shakespeare, which is the more power one acquires unethically, the more corrupt and evil they will become. The first quote shows perfectly her mindset going into the murder of King Duncan. She is frustrated with the manliness that Macbeth is giving off, and states her desires to act in a manner more cruel and more-so like a man rather than a woman. In addition, the second quote helps show the lack of empathy and remorse for what has just happened. After Macbeth kills Duncan and the two guards, he accidentally brings the knives with him, as he isn’t exactly thinking straight. Lady Macbeth tells him he must put them back, however Macbeth
Throughout Act II Scene II, lines 58-81, Shakespeare’s inclusion of universal symbols: hands, blood, water, and eyes, affects the overall tone and meaning by adding a concealed principle and an added component adding to, and enhancing the way, that the play is presented. The use of hands also assumes the same principle as daggers in that they show power, and the destruction that they have just caused in the murder they both committed. The blood and the water both work together although they have separate meanings. The blood symbolizes the guilt he has for murdering the king in cold blood, and the instant regret Macbeth feels for it, while blood symbolizes a sacrifice for what is wanted for Lady Macbeth, it is not nearly as
