Lao-tzu or "Old Master," the author of the Tao-te-Ching wrote not only about the moral behavior one should live their life by, but also about the ways to create a functional government. Lao-tzu wrote mainly for politicians as a guide to follow in order for them to become good leaders. Lao-tzu informs his readers that one can only help people by allowing them to help themselves. One powerful statement from the Tao-te-Ching is, "When they think that they know the answers, / people are difficult to guide." This statement is not only applicable for followers of the Tao-te-Ching, but it can also apply for people of today as well. There are many examples of the previous Lao-tzu quote that apply to today. Teachers cannot do their job and actually teach the students if they do not care or want to learn from them. Lao-tzu is trying to tell his readers that we have much to learn from others around us, in that we should not be so closed minded and believe that we have the
On the other hand, Lao-tzu admits that being the best leader, partly depends on how people feel about him/her. As he said in his book, “Next best is a leader who is loved. Next one who is feared. The worst is one who is despised.” (Lao-tzu 17) There are many examples of how successful leaders can be when they are being loved by their people. It is a natural act that affects them in being let to stay in power or not. Similarly, governments at the moment face this fact too and as we see throughout the world, governments are being overthrown because of their people’s distaste and hate. That is
1.) According to Lao-tzu, what must the ruler provide the people with if they are to be happy?
Tzu believed in action through inaction, Hsun Tzu linked "dull and determined effort" with "brilliant achievement" (18). Hsun Tzu also emphasized self-improvement through "conscious activity" (158), but Lao Tzu believed that the ideal human "disregards himself" (Lao Tzu, 7) and "does not want to be anything for
“Gentleman” is “a Confucian term for a person of virtue and breeding—one who always fulfills the appropriate roles for a person of his or her rank” (6). Tzu uses various text patterns, such as illustrations, comparisons, and causes and effects, to describe the gentleman. He started his essay with metaphors and narratives that emphasize a world with no learning involved at all. “Blue comes from the indigo plant but is bluer than the plant itself” (6) is one of the most obvious examples of figurative speech relating to this concept. Tzu then moves on to suggest that laziness brings disaster. He uses several vivid examples of each phenomenon that always has consequences, and he uses them to support the idea that “[t]he glory or shame that come to a man are no more than the image of his virtue” (7). At times throughout his essay, he compares two ideas relating to moral learning and explains what makes each of them different. For example, he demonstrates contrary learning styles between the man who uses learning for excellence and the other who uses learning for social attraction (9). It is implied that attitudes can either make or break the importance of learning. The connection made between the gentleman and today’s society is that education is available to help shape the nature of inherently evil human beings, thus making schools a great starting
Government is the essential power of a country, which directly influences society because it provides somewhat of a security blank for those who are affected by it. Lao-Tzu’s, “Thoughts from the Tao-te Ching,” along with Niccolo Machiavelli’s, “The Qualities of the Prince,” both discuss multiple characteristics that a leader should possess to be a successful. While their goal is similar, in which they both describe what it takes to become a better leader, their ideas concerning leading are conflicting.
That with wisdom and control is what makes a great person and leader. Go about life in a respectable way, make decisions based upon what you think is right and generally accepted by society. If you choose to go in the opposite direction, you know of the consequences that come with the decisions.
Lao-tzu’s view of government is the master should not have optimal power over the people. He feels as though people should be ignorant of
Refraining from absolute negativity about Lao-Tzu’s work, the Tao does have many redeemable qualities. The emphasis Lao-Tzu places on the attainment of individual happiness is extremely honorable, however this doesn’t detract from the ineffectiveness Lao-Tzu encounters, as he is unable to come to well-grounded conclusion on the means for effective leadership. His advice to politicians is to only interfere when it is an absolute necessity; yet he takes this to a radical extreme advising leaders to pretty much do nothing. His ideas are taken to an extent where if human nature falters, which it
Complied during the Warring States Period, the Daodejing is widely known as one of China’s famous philosophy literature. This text reflects the general lament of a civilization that has been worn down from war and seeks to find peace by teaching people how to live by “the Way”. From a war-torn perspective, the Daodejing deems war and government corruption as evil and traces them back to greedy and power-hungry motives. As a successor to Confucius, it still carries some of his ethics. Because of its mystical overtones, it has acquired a large variety of interpretations. Its main teaching is if a person does nothing, then peace will be restored; it is the concept of non-action or 无为。When a person does not try to interfere and allows things to
A ruler, in China, is the most honored person in the Chinese society, but the ruler has an obligation to be a moral and upright individual. The Tao addresses these individuals on page
Tao Te Ching of Lao-Tzu is a book with many chapters in it showing the two different sides to basically everything. To break it down, Tao means “path” or “way”, Te means “to get”, and Ching means “great book”. So the Tao was the force that controlled the universe and appreciated the way, to find balance between opposites. The book, Tao Te Ching has been said to been written by a Laozi—an old master—and has been said that the true author (or authors’) name has been lost. In the chapters between the book it tells how to live a life of integrity and of greatness per say. It also has contradictions or paradoxes which allows us to see the both perspectives of each side. It shows us that there are always two sides to everything. Tao Te Ching
Some of the main points and ideas that the author is attempting to convey is that the book talks about his four lessons and after people have read it can do so much in changing one’s own future to say the least. The first lesson is about learning to create destiny, the second lesson is about ways to reform, the third lesson is about the different ways to cultivate kindness, and lastly the fourth lesson is about the different benefits of the virtue of humility. Liao fan’s four lessons was originally written during china’s Ming Dynasty by Mr. Liao-Fan Yuan. The book was intended to teach his son, Tien-Chi Yuan, how to recognize the true face of destiny, how to tell good from evil, and the methods for correcting one’s own faults and practicing
Some people would argue that this book is to teach people how to rule the world since a large part of the book is speaking to the ruler. Some people think that this is to teach people self-cultivation, because it seems to teach people how to act and behave. Some people also believe that this is a book on military strategy, which is to teach people how to fight. However, according to Lao Tzu, he only has three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. (Ch 67).
Important people- Lao Tzu (Laozi) went to the western border of China and was told to record his teach ings. Chuang Tzu was a Chinese philosopher took the teachings of Lao Tzu and developed them. He also made it easier to understand.
I also believe that an important part to be an excellent teacher is the desire to help others. If a teacher did not have the want to help others, then obviously, it would be difficult for them to help students succeed. Students need help, it should be a teacher’s number one priority to help their students. Some may not ask for help and some may need more help than others, however, teachers who get angry or annoyed with students when help is asked of them, will not be successful. Therefore, desire to help others is very important when
