Characteristics of a Leader in Lord of the Flies
Many people have many different views on what a leader is. Leaders vary from team captain to the President of the United States. Of course, the leadership skills a team captain have are much different from those of the President of the United States. In the book, Lord of the Flies, leadership skills show through many of the characters. Boys ages 6-12 years old are left to fight for their lives on an abandoned island after their plane crashes. At this age, some of the boys may think they deserve this position, but the boy with the best leadership skills needs obtain it for the good of the group. The characteristics of a leader in Lord of the Flies vary from being a good public speaker, to being brave and to being willing to listen to the others opinions.
One characteristic of a leader is being a good public speaker. Ralph shows this characteristic the best. He leads

Jack shows bravery by taking on the manly task of being the hunter-gatherer. When Jack goes on the hunt for the pig it shows he is brave. Even though Jack does not know and may fear what might be in the woods to get him, he goes anyway. This shows how Jack does care for the group because he is risking his life for theirs. Ralph shows bravery when he, Jack and Roger went on the hunt to find the beast after Samneric said they had seen it. They all tossed around the idea of who would go first into Castle Rock to see about the beast. Soon after that, Ralph says “I’m chief. I’ll go. Don’t argue.” (Golding, pg 104) Bravery is shown here by not only facing their fears, but facing their fears so the others would not have to fear. The purpose of having this characteristic is helping those who are not brave survive. Some of the young boys would have been too scared to go on the hunt for the beast. This would mean they would forever be in fear about it. Brave leaders help the not so brave followers
Ralph always seems to know what is best, he takes control of the the meetings they have, building
Over time there have been many leaders of countries, groups and societies that are believed to be the “best” or what someone could only dream of. However what if a perfect leader doesn’t exist? In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies Ralph’s sense of leadership declines throughout the novel. So what if he doesn’t actually possess the skills the boys had hoped he for.
In society, there are often people who acquire strong leadership qualities and understand what it means to be a favorable leader. Other times, there are people who have strong qualities to lead, but they do not understand how to be a favorable leader and create a safe and comfortable environment for those following them. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the characters of Ralph and Jack arise as two different leaders who bear strong characteristics and they both seek power on the island. The boys become leaders in their own ways, creating individual environments that prioritize different matters, all while trying to work towards their rescue off the island.
Leadership takes notice, responsibility, self-development, and experience. Thoughts pop up when one thinks of a leader, perhaps a captain of a team, the president, maybe even the bigger brother. These people are mostly responsible and developed, they take notice into what is happening in any situation, but the experience is where a leader and a follower have things in common in most situations. Lord of the Flies is a book where children are trapped on a deserted island and have to create their own small world. Jack is one of the chosen leaders in the book, he came with most of the children from the plane crash. They soon meet Ralph, who is another chosen leader throughout the book. So called “leaders” in the book are very important characters
First of all, the most important trait that makes Ralph the best leader is his rational mind. I personally think that a leader should be a respectable and organized person. Ralph demonstrates his leading ability very well by the way he treats
A leader is someone who has determination. They are willing to do anything to benefit other people in order to help lead them to greatness. When I think of a leader, the people that come to my mind are those who have helped change the world. This includes George Washington, or Martin Luther King. Jr. I definitely do not think about Ralph from Lord of the Flies when I think of a leader. Some people may argue that Ralph kept the group together and knew what was best for the young boys. However, I am aware that Ralph had good ideas. For instance, the signal fire which, in the end, helped the boys get rescued was a good idea. Despite this, Ralph did not do an altogether good job at holding the group together. By the end of the novel, one boy went missing, two of his friends were murdered, and Jack's tribe had almost accomplished their goal of hunting Ralph down and placing his head on a stick.
A leader is someone who directs or guides a group. However, good leadership is the ability to set priorities and accomplish what needs to be done with the feelings of the group in mind. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph demonstrates many traits that would be considered good leadership. At times he also lacks them, and if he had demonstrated them he could have helped the situation greatly. Ralph understands how people feel and has the ability to respect that and make decisions based off of people’s feelings. He also has the ability to be very serious, which is a good leadership trait if you want to accomplish something. Ralph was also very wise and always made the decisions that he thought were best for the group. In addition, Ralph is
A bad leader is someone who tries to be a dictator. Ralph is also a bad Leader. He would fight about what everyone
Why are leaders so necessary in our world? A good leader helps create an organized society with structure and thinks of others before themselves. In the novel, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the boys are faced with many obstacles regarding leadership. There is no adult to play that role meaning they must figure out who can endorse that role effectively. Out of all of the boys, Ralph possess the skills to be a good leader for all of the boys on the island.
What qualities make an or break a good leader? History would define leaders by being decisive, passionate, approachable and courageous. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding shows that like in many civilized countries there is a need for a leader to make decisions that best represents the people. Even in the extreme case in Lord of the Flies being on a deserted island; democracy and a leader are necessary to survive. Ralph exhibits being wise and prudence as Ralph displays the innate characteristic of sensibility when he decides to build shelters for survival and create a signal fire on top of the mountain. Ralph establishes himself as the best leader as he is democratic opposite to his counterpart. He exhibits this when he declares the holding of the conch as the right to speak during their assemblies. Ralph demonstrates one of the most challenging qualities of being a good leader; courage. Ralph demonstrates the characteristic of being courageous when he and the “biguns” are searching for the “beastie” in Castle Rock. In the novel Lord of the Flies, there is a competitiveness for power, although one emerges as the best leader on the island. Ralph is the best leader as he demonstrates the following characteristics; he is sensible, democratic, and finally courageous.
Various Goals of Different World Leaders World War II was the deadliest war in history. It changed the lives of many because of the leaders who ruled during that time. In 1918 Germany lost and Adolf Hitler believed it was the Jews fault because they betrayed the “fatherland”. That is when hatred towards all the Jews began.
Leadership, by definition, is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. However, leadership exceeds barking orders and receiving favors. Leaders are responsible for the well-being of the people they conduct. Regardless of variations in power, the vital aspect is how they use that power. In the novel Lord of the Flies, the author elucidates the different forms of leadership, how the people react to these leaders, and how effectiveness of these leaders can be the cause of triumph or catastrophe of society.
Great leaders govern society today, but what qualities do these leaders possess that puts them above the rest? The qualities that are required to make good and lasting leaders are portrayed in the four texts Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Gone by Michael Grant, ‘The Iron Lady’ directed by Phylida Lloyd, and Macbeth by William Shakespeare.
Leaders must have certain characteristics to control a large group of people like in “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph has a sense of civility which may remind they other boys of home. Jack scares the boys with punishment. Both boys are leaders, and they both have very different personalities/characteristics that make them a natural leader. There are also people that have the intelligence of a leader and tend to be very good at making plans, but don’t know how to execute the plan properly, so they won’t make a good leader in a survival situation where execution is key to success.
The theme of leadership is uncovered by the symbol of the conch. As the connection grows between the protagonist and the conch, outer forces break the bond in attempt to take the position as leader. Ralph along with other boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding are trapped on an island due to the crash of their airplane. With no adults on the island to discipline the boys, one must step up and take on this role. The discovery of the conch encourages Ralph to become chief, Ralph has the ability to use the conch to enforce his rules, but the unfortunate shattering of the conch breaks Ralphs hold on to leadership.
