For centuries countries that fell behind in technological advancements have been colonized by countries that were further advanced, or by countries that were more powerful. When presented with the idea of colonizing countries Great Britain sticks out the most. Great Britain has been colonizing different countries and nations for years. Great Britain colonized most of South Asia and Africa. For many years these countries and nations were under rule by Europe or Western ways. The thing is, that in ways this could be a good thing. As said above this typically happens when a country or nation falls short of advancements and or power. Being colonized by a country that is advanced and has a larger amount of power can potentially help these …show more content…
These different countries and nations, even though pushing for independence and decolonization really had no idea how to run things on their own. When leader came to power within them, they lacked strong leadership. The citizens within these places were also lost. Everyone had under western ruling for so long, they had no sense patriotism. Chakrabarty references a few sources explaining how national anthems would be sung at any time for any reason. One leader Nehru stood in front of a group of his people and explained to them step by step how the anthem should be done and how to respect him as a leader (54). Chakrabarty says that this along with other examples he had found, presents almost a teaching scenario amongst citizens of these new independent and decolonized places on citizenship. To be a leader, amongst citizens within a country or nation and have to take a stance that resembles a teacher more than a leader makes it very difficult to control one’s country or nation. To have citizens within your own country or nation who have no sense of what it means to be a citizen or what citizenship looks like also makes running it difficult. A big issue that Chakrabarty presents, is how the West showed little interest in helping these new countries and nations once they became independent. He mentions how the West refused to help, which caused a lot of these new nations to have to lean on their own. These new nations
Although the colonial period, portrayed a time in which a variety of people were severely abused and many conflicts were provoked, there were also many positive sides towards the American colonization. This positive side promoted societal growth and increased numerous countries` wealth dramatically. For example, the English found an outlet to employ many of their low class peasants in their Chesapeake colonization, and also found a way to produce large amounts of rice, tobacco, and many more exports. In addition to obtaining expensive goods and recourses, American colonization gave European empires the opportunity to expand their rule across oceans. However, In some situations this reaped negative results, such as the British attempt to excessively control their colonies by unconstitutionally issuing new taxes. One can even go as far to say that American colonization led to the separation of the British empire. Thus, there were both positive and negative aspects towards American colonization, but if all the senseless deaths were worth the society we have today, will be a question debated for many
The motivation behind conquering colonies in Africa starts with the opportunity to thrive economically. In document 9 from the Resolution of the German Social Democratic Party Congress 1900, it states that acquiring new lands, “…corresponds…to the greedy desire of the bourgeoisie for new opportunities to invest… [in] new markets. This shows one of the motivations for colonization; to invest and open new markets in the new lands in hope to make a profit. The desire for new markets in Europe was getting bigger and bigger now that the population was rising and jobs were becoming scarce. Colonizing new areas in Africa would lead to more imports and exports leading to more jobs which seemed appealing to most people. Supporting the idea of creating a better economy is document 4, which is a speech in 1888 by Joseph Chamberlain. In his speech he says, “We have suffered much in this country from depression of trade. We know how many of our fellow-subjects are at this moment unemployed.” This quote shows that Britain’s trade is declining with other nations and many of the people are unemployed. This is motivation for the British to colonize in Africa because with new colonies in Africa, trade would
Imperialism is defined as a policy of extending a country 's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Countries during the Industrial Revolution wanted to imperialize due to social, political, and economic reasons. As early as the mid 1800’s, the European countries craved the idea of power and conquering new lands in order to obtain resources/raw materials. They took over Africa, the Ottoman Empire, India, and Southeast Asia due to this as well as for their convenient location. They believed that the more land one owns, the stronger the country would be. Although some can argue the fact that imperialism had a detrimental effect because these countries lost their culture and independence, the end result of this was definitely more positive than negative both short term and long term. These countries would not be as thriving today if this had not happened. European Imperialism in parts of the Middle east, Africa, and Asia had more of a positive impact on the world due to education, modernization, healthcare/sanitation, and more trade/resources used.
According to Kashima (2010), defining what culture means is a difficult task. Culture can be considered the individual differences of identity. Culture is established by numerous things such as ideology and beliefs. While categories of culture are not limited to only country, a common classification of culture is that of different countries. Vietnam’s culture is diverse, influences from many countries have played a role in shaping Vietnam’s culture. Years of Chinese rule, French imperialism, social conflicts and war have given Vietnamese culture a unique richness of language, music and history.
In a document written Benjamin Disraeli of Britain (2), he says the colonization will strengthen the empire, clearly showing the economic motive. In a document written by British Joseph Chamberlain (3), he says that the more land will strengthen their empire. He wrote it to show that the colonization will mainly strengthen Britain showing the economic motive. In a document written by the German Social Democratic Party Congress (5), they said that the colonization will get them new markets showing that some countries had the motive of strengthening their economy. Their is still one more motive.
Document Based Essay Colonization is the process of establishing a territory in another country or place. I believe colonization of the New World was worth the costs. Colonizing the New World lead England to great prosperity and increased sovereignty of land. Some people claim that England was to blame for the extremely numerous Native American fatalities in the process, but this is not the case.
During that time period, imperialism was very prominent. Many countries outside of Europe were being colonized by big European countries. Document E shows the amount of countries that Great Britain has colonized. Because they had so many different countries, they had access to different resources to manufacture items or supplies. This could create conflict with other countries that would have also wanted those resources causing a war over land.
When the colonies become ruled by a mother country this means the natives will most likely become slaves (Document 2). The European countries will benefit from their labor. In Africa missionaries came and the natives didn't like them (Document 4). The Africans thought of them very negatively because they used religion as means to gain trust so they could conquest the natives land. Also, new diseases were introduced to the natives by the Europeans. There were many more negative effects of imperialism in Africa like their loss of dignity and their ability to lead themselves (Document 6). This is because the Europeans taught them that their culture was inferior to theirs. In the political cartoon in Document 7, it shows a cartoonist implying that Europeans work the natives in the colonies very hard all for the money. They don't care about the natives well being. In India, the British took over and many bad effects occurred as result to this. Like, Indian resources going straight to Britain. Also British manufactured good replaced Indian local industry. Farmers were forced to grow cash crops like tea and cotton and Indians went hungry. Also, top jobs were reserved for the British. This left many Indians unemployed. The Indians were treated as inferiors in their own country. Many wars broke out due to racism and which mother country wanted which colony. Like in Africa the Boers War in 1899 was a confrontation between the English and the Dutch when England wanted to take the Cape Colony from the Dutch. Another war in Africa caused by Imperialism is the Zulu war. The Zulu war was caused by British aggression. In China the Opium war was between Great Britain and China. It began in 1839 as a conflict over the opium trade that ended in 1842 with the opening of five Chinese ports to foreign merchants. But the worst effect of Imperialism is when the mother country tries to replace the culture of the
Google states, ”Imperialism is a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force”. The European used native countries and people for their own purpose. There were some benefits and costs of European imperialism on native countries. One benefit was they opened schools and provided medications for everyone because they thought it was their duty. One cost is British treated African like slaves. They were sold and bought like objects and were treated brutally. Another cost is The Scramble For Africa, It is when European power fought control for large parts of Africa.
During the time period of late 1800s and early 1900s the group of the colonizers were gaining many benefits. They were able to gain land, labor, and resources. According to O.P. Austin in (Doc 2) the colonizers were able to control garden spots in the tropics, this gains a huge agricultural benefit for the colonizers. The colonizers were also able to carve the land the claimed into what they felt was beneficial for themselves. For example, it stated that they were able to change an economy that helped benefit themselves but themselves only (Doc 5). In (Doc 3) it shows that the colonizers were able to gain labor from the
India was colonized by the British because of the abundance of natural resources including natural gas, coal, gold, diamonds, and copper. Britain wasn't the only country running for the mines; Germany established the German East Africa Company. They established gold mines and used advanced machinery along with hard labor to invest their resources in the mining industry (Doc 8). In the eyes of Germany, the market of home made goods has decreased in the rise of imperialism and each country has a market waiting to be established (Doc 5). By investing in a new market in one country, one country may expand the market through the imperialism of other territories and gain control over that industry. Britain had the advantage over other European countries colonizing countries in Africa because they spread out their territory over the entire continent, enabling Britain to control multiple industries. The control of multiple industries sparked a rapid increase in capital which also increased Britains power. This power came from money to invest in a strong military, broad trade relations, and new
North America should colonize South America because they will guide them in a positive direction. In the article “The Independence In Congo (Doc. 3)” it says they want to teach the native races to conduct their own affairs with freedom, life and to educate them (Lumumba,1961,para.2). If the Natives let the U.S colonize their countries they will teach them positive humanity actions. In another article named “Things Fall Apart” it says the British expanded trade in the region and built religious schools. The school system included a great class of professionals based on a Western model. Native languages were committed to writing for the first time allowing history to be taught (Things Fall Apart,2012,pg. 19). North America will bring good education systems in South America and they will expand trade if the natives allow them to colonize their countries. With the U.S
Industrialization added to Britain’s desire for raw materials and new markets and the British were motivated by this desire and looked for colonies to obtain. Adopting the policy of imperialism was economically beneficial for Britain, since it helped supply Britain with raw materials for industrial development, along with cheap food for Britain’s developing population. Britain chose to become imperialistic, because it would bring them prudent and economic benefits.
Why would anyone want to go through the trouble of colonizing? The English had such motives that compelled them to leave their motherland. It was for the reasons of seeking freedom, seeing there was nothing in Britain for them, and success accessed by other nations.
Many positive things happened during, and as a result of, the British colonization of India. When the East India Company took control of India in 1612, they began modernizing, westernizing, and industrializing India. This westernization included giving women more rights, an attempt to eliminate the caste system and the loss of many of the more backward Hindu religious beliefs such as the domination of women by men and denying an entire class of people any rights. British occupation also did things long term for India. The modern technology and western customs allowed India to become a burgeoning regional superpower. The colonization of India was helpful for India because it went a long way to modernize India, westernized India in
