“Why can’t she understand?” She thought silently, though the words were screaming loudly in her mind. But how could she? The world Lelia lived in stayed far removed from that of her mother’s. As a result, Marion did the only thing she knew how to do to comfort her daughter if only in some slight way, she asked that Jessie and Timmy might stay with her for a day or two. Grateful to leave the two little ones in the care of her mother, Lelia left on foot, plodding down Franklin Street. Sniffling, she used the sleeve of her jacket to wipe the tears from her flushed cheeks. Her hasty idea to head straight back to the farm left Lelia in hopes the wait for the mail truck wouldn’t be a long one. If it was, she’d just die. What if someone she knew noticed her there, in such a state of emotional upheaval?

Not paying attention, Lelia tripped as she stepped from the graveled roadside of Franklin to the sidewalk in front of the bank. She lost her steadiness, but didn’t fall. Seconds after recapturing her balance, Lelia recognized her old friend, Samuel Truman, walking straight toward her. She tried not to stare, but he looked phenomenal as he carried his suit coat nonchalantly over his shoulder, with his deep-blue tie showing off the vividness of his perfectly starched, white shirt. Perhaps daydreaming, Sam’s walk was casual as he whistled some tune; Lelia remembered how in high school he’d have a song stuck in his head and he’d whistle the same tune for days. To Lelia, Sam hadn’t shown any signs of age, other than his sandy-blonde locks were thinning slightly on top, along with a slight graying at the temples.
