In the book The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, many lessons were to be learned, and also many themes were introduced. The novel started out with introducing the main characters, Kino, Juana, and
Coyotito, the baby. To start off the story, Coyotito got stung by a scorpion, and in turn, this event caused much upset. Because of this, his parents had to take him to the rich, greedy, and selfish doctor who ended up turning them down and sending them home. The next major event that happened was that while Kino was diving for pearls, he came across an amazing pearl and was even described in the book as, “the pearl of the world” (Steinbeck pg.21). After this major turning point in the book, everyone in Kino’s town came to see the pearl, and many times it was almost stolen. Soon after Kino was taken advantage of by the pearl sellers in town, he decided to sell it in the capital. His plans were ruined when some thieves tried to steal the pearl, and Kino killed one of them. Kino and Juana fled to the mountains where Coyotito was killed by a tracker. To finish off the book, Kino and Juana returned to the town they lived in before, and threw the evil, troublesome pearl back into the ocean. After reading this novel, I now think that having wealth and power can affect a person's behavior and actions, just how Kino was affected after finding the pearl.
There were many lessons to be learned in the novel. One main theme of the book is greed. Greed is shown in Kino throughout the book
Eventually he goes to sell the pearl to the white men in town, and they try to low-ball him because they think natives stupid and unintelligible. Steinbeck makes this known with highlighting what was important to Kino very shortly after he found the pearl it can also be seen as foreshadowing what will not happen.
His family was really close and they loved each other without money. His obsession with the pearl caused his son Coyotito to die. Kinos tends to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something he does not have but appreciating and recognizing what he does have. Throughout the pearl” Kino and his family learned this the hard way. The pearl demonstrates Kino was already making a hard skin for himself against the world”(29). Kino changes his character throughout the story by his thoughts and actions. In the first chapter of the novel kino is presented as a loving protect her husband who wants nothing more than support for his family. Furthermore to know was cruel to his wife after he found the pearl. Having a lot of money but not being happy is worse than being happy and not having money. Perhaps, people should learn the having a lot of money is not as important as
Kino has a big call to adventure which interestingly propels the momentum of the story forward at the very start of the book. “Kino’s hand leapt to catch it but it fell past his fingers, fell on the baby’s
Although Kino performed many heroic acts, he also acted foolishly in various circumstances. He lives with his wife Juana and his son Coyotito. The novel tells his story when he happens to find a large pearl in the beach that has the capacity to either bring him death or happiness. After finding this big pearl, he believes that this is going to the beginning of a new chapter for him and his family because poverty was eventually going to leave them. His foolishness was first seen when he announced the pearl that he had found making everyone to try to steal it from him. Knowing the worth of the pearl, he should have kept the information to himself and sold it later. After seeing what people were able to do to him because of the pearl, he should have just sold it at the price the buyers said because it eventually led to the death of his son. The buyers only referred to it as a ‘fool’s gold’ and that it was not worth anything. Kino’s greed put his family in danger and caused the death of his only son. Even after he was convinced that the pearl was evil by his wife, he says, "The pearl has become my soul. If I shall give it up, I
In the book, The Pearl, there is one main instance where Kino, Juana, and Coyotito gain something and it changes them and their lives throughout the whole book. There are many themes, what the characters gain and how it changes them, how does gaining and losing wealth and power affect people, and how the story compares to today’s society.
Being exposed to social classes, greed and the unfair qualities of life has made the real world grow. Because of social classes we are able to balance and achieve more for our societies (and taxes). Kinos town was perfectly balanced until the rumor was in the air of a stir in the social classes. Once the townspeople found out that a person of lower class now has the potential to be one of them or higher, the townspeople were at Kino and Juanas throats to procure their beacon of wealth. Juana and Kino being exposed to envy and greed at such a rapid pace exposed them to paranoia, the loss of their greatest treasure, not being the pearl, and to the reality of not wanting what they thought they needed. Once they lose their precious son, Kino hurls
“A woman’s loyalty is tested when her man has nothing... A man’s loyalty is tested when he has everything.” This quote therefore describes a relationship, between Juana and Kino in “The Pearl.” In the book, this young couple lived a quaint life in their community village with their baby son, Coyotito. One day, when Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, they turn towards the doctor for medical help, who refuses to treat their son unless they offer money to pay for the treatment.
The works of John Steinbeck have been used universally on scholarly account because of his ability to establish themes in his writing that are relevant to life. The Pearl, is one work that contains issues as ideas that are still significant to this day. One theme, such as greed, is displayed throughout the course of the novel. As each character develops, their intentions with the pearl become evident to the reader. This theme is seen through many of the characters who are eager to obtain the pearl. In The Pearl, the theme of greed is shown through the doctor’s intentions, Kino’s attitude, and Juana’s discontent of the pearl.
The pearl plays a big part in the story. It brings down the family, changes Kinos way of thinking, and his priorities. When Kino first find the pearl it brings him hope which is shown through the quote “In the surface of the great pearl he could see dream forms.” (Steinbeck 19) this shows how his hope that things will get better for his family. The hope that he has is also shown when he is talking to everyone. He starts to talk about his dreams and there are four of them “We will be married- in the church. He spoke softly.” (24) This is the first of his hopes. The second
As more and more bad things happen to Kino like hurting his wife he realizes that the pearl is evil and runs away from his burned down home only to realize that hunters are after him. Kino quickly realizes that he has to kill them but in the process they kill the baby. Kino looks at the pearl and only sees darkness and evil, not the joy and pride he use to and throws it away so he can go back to his old life. In this book the author attacks the church, medical profession, capitalism, and class
In the novella The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the pearl causes unforeseen misery and greed despite its beauty and promise of riches. The book tells the tale of a poor pearl diver and his family. The pearl diver, known as Kino finds “the pearl of the world” and just like that, greed begins to destroy him and his family. The town becomes stricken with greed over Kino’s newfound riches. The pearl pushes both Kino and the townspeople to destroy and ultimately kill over the pearl.
At first, Kino’s friends and family are happy for him for finding the pearl, but once the people started thinking of what they could gain from the wealth of the pearl, it corrupted them with greed. Greediness takes over the town’s people in the village by them realizing what the pearl can do for them. Influential people, like the town doctor, the pearl dealers and even the town's priest all are consumed with greediness for the pearl’s wealth. “The news came early to the beggars in front of the church, and it made them giggle a little with pleasure, for they knew that there is no almsgiver in the world like a poor man who is suddenly lucky” (24). All of these people with high moral values fall victim to greed when they try to steal the pearl from Kino.
The Pearl written by John Steinbeck is a parable, a story that teaches a moral lesson. The focus of this novel is on a poor Indian family. The family consists of three members: Kino, a husband, father, and fisherman, Juana, his wife and loving mother; and Coyotito their infant son. This indigent family lives in a small brush hut along the Gulf of Mexico by the town of La Paz. One day Coyotito, is bitten by a scorpion; a scorpion sting can be deadly to a baby. Kino and Juana are very worried over the health of their baby; therefore, they hope to find a pearl worthy enough for the doctor’s payment to the doctor to treat Coyotito. With luck on their side, Kino finds a pearl the size of a seagull’s egg; he calls it “The Pearl of the
Kino overall symbolizes clearly good and innocent. Kino is thought of as 'a wise, primitive man' who is hungry for fortune because of the great pearl, which he discovers and later in the story he becomes 'an angry, frightened, but resolute man, determined to keep what he has earned'. He is a young diver who lives in a small village on the coastline of
