For my student interview, I was partnered up with a fellow student named Mary Fowler, but some call her by her nickname “Lynn Lou.” Her name was chosen by her grandmother on her father’s side who passed away. She is 18 years old and was born December 22,1998. She works at a salon called Celebrity Styles in Mentor and works as a babysitter as a side job. She just came from Columbus to get her Cosmetology license. A few years ago, she worked at a disgusting place called Manhattan Deli, she stopped working there because she had to get surgery in her leg. Tipping has emerged as a major method of compensating wait staff ever since the 1960s when Congress passed the provision within Fair Labor Standards Act legislation which introduced the “tip credit” (Allegretto & Cooper, July 10, 2014). The FLSA provision set the minimum wage for tipped employees at $2.13 per hour, given that the employees would ‘earn’ $7.25 per hour from tips. The government considers employees who earn more than $30 per month as tipped employees. The tipped minimum wage has adversely impacted tipped employees, which includes barbers, stylists, wait staff, doormen, etc., such that they need to provide a high level of service so they can receive generous tips. The tipped minimum wage provision assigns tipped employees to high poverty due to their low income salary levels.

On October 26, 2016 an interview was conducted with Mr. Johnathan Bracey. During the interview session Mr. Bracey was able to clearly state basic information about himself. Basic information such as: Date of birth/age, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, marital/relationship status, primary language, socioeconomic status, and religion. When asked his date of birth Mr. Bracey stated, “I was born on the fifth of August during the year 1991, so I am currently twenty-five years old.” Mr. Bracey was then asked which gender does he identify; giving the response that he identifies as a male. After identifying himself as male, Mr. Bracey then stated, “I am an African-American male, as far as I know. I believe most of my ancestors were African-American, so I do not believe I am mixed with anything.” Therefore, this statement from Mr. Bracey led to race. When asked his race, he stated, “Yeah, I’m just African-American, so you can just say that I am black.” Mr. Bracey was then asked about sexual orientation during the interview. He stated, “I’m attracted to girls and girls only, so I classify myself as heterosexual.” Fortunately, Mr. Bracey was able to give his marital/relationship status in his following statement saying, “I like girls, but unfortunately I am not in a relationship at the moment, nor have I ever been married, so you can say I’m single.” Next, Mr. Bracey was asked his primary language and was able to confirm English was his primary language by

Although I was prepared, the anticipation of the mock interview was unsettling, once the interview process began, however my anxiety subsided. My confidence was flourishing with a nice shirt, a fresh crop chop, my sleekest spectacles, and little light make up, there was nothing in my way. Except the intimidation of my peers, subconscious competition , and ego, I tried my hardest to remain calm, cool, and collective. Similar to a goldfish in a small bowl as a room filled with people stop to stare and as they put their faces close to the bowl I lock eyes with the same awkward poise.

I approached ‘KC’ initially to enquire if she would assist with this assignment, as we had already spoken a great deal about her daughter’s death. KC would be the perfect subject for this interview, as she had always been open about her daughter and I was interested to understand further, how losing a child affects a parent.

A Informal interview is a meeting that takes place between the interviewer and the interviewee without structured questions designed the same as other candidates. This type of interview allows for the candidate to talk more about their personal life and provide information that was not received in the formal interview.
