“…One Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all…” (pledge of allegiance)
Few phrases evoke American patriotism in the same magnitude as the pledge of allegiance. Written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, he hopped to inspire americans and remind people of what makes america great. In the final line “liberty and Justice for all”, Bellamy summarized the ideals our country was founded on and what we should continue to strive for as we grow as we continue into the future. That the government should preserve the liberty of its people. Liberty is described as the state of being free from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority.(dictionary). In recent events there have been many misconceptions about what preservation of

Well, It is not unheard of for government to impose its will, wanted or not, onto the citizens under his authority ,in any fashion, big or small, for its own gain. This selfish behavior cannot be tolerated by a governing body devoted to providing its citizens with the right of Liberty. Operating with the primary focus of liberty is an indication that the people will be put before the government and the good of the many will outweigh the good of the few, but, it also means that the citizens of a country will be tasked with their own well being, their finances and personal affairs are their own and are no business for the …show more content…
Communism is an exact example of the result of this type of government dogma. Citizens cannot own property, cannot choose their jobs, and have no say in their way of life. The government owns everything and allots it to its citizens as it sees fit(citation). While communism promises equality for all, this does not mean prosperity for all. Almost all citizens suffer with poorer quality of life, poorer environments, and often terrible working conditions. Without the motivation, or proper faculties to work, many communist regimes are toppled by financial ruin, unable to produce the money to maintain itself. By allowing citizens to choose their own occupation, production in a county increases massively. the highest functioning communist country (china) produces just over half as much as the lowest functioning free nation (Estonia), China only producing $6,807.43 per capita compared to Estonia’s $18,783.04. The economic difference between liberty and security becomes even more clear cut when compared to countries like the United Kingdom ($41,787.41 GDP per capita) and the United States ($53,041.98 GDP per Capita). Forced work managing to barely achieve 1/6 of the economic activity of a Democratic
Freedom is defined as the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement. It is the power to determine action without restraint and the exemption from external control, interference, and regulation. Americans, these days, commonly regard their society as the freest and the best in the world. Their understanding of freedom has been shaped and based upon the founding fathers’ belief that all people are equal and that the role of the government is to protect each person’s basic “inalienable” rights. The United States Constitution’s Bill of Rights assures individual rights including freedom of speech, press, and religion. America has changed dramatically from the country our founding fathers discovered. Some could even argue that
Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance in 1892 (Baer). He did this in the memory of the 400th anniversary of Columbus discovering America ("The Pledge"). In 1954, Congress added the words, under God to the pledge; this was done for the differentiation of the United States from the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Ironically, the Pledge of Allegiance originated from the hand of a social minister and chairman of the National Education Association, Francis Bellamy. Bellamy’s goal with the initial 23 word pledge was to impress it upon receptive, youthful minds, and convey the compassion and the patriotic duty deserving of the Republic. As a result, “more than 12 million public school children in every state in the Union” spoke the Pledge of Allegiance that day (Moss 2006). Since then, it has been a catalyst for tradition turned into mandatory law.
From a young age, I remember starting a school day by standing, facing the American flag with my right hand placed over my heart, and reciting the pledge of allegiance. The pledge was as follows, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”, however, that was not always how it was worded. The Pledge of Allegiance that many Americans know today has been rewritten many times, by the United States' government. Moreover, the language of the Pledge was changed in a straightforward way for American citizens to show their patriotism for America.
Socialist minister Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance in August 1892. In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. Then in 1954, President Eisenhower encourages Congress to add the words "under God." Communist threats during that time period lead to the issue of whether those words should be added. This resulted in the pledge that many American citizens know and say today: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." This pledge states the federal government’s promises to all American citizens. Since our Founding Fathers declared the United States’ independence from Great Britain on July fourth, 1776, American politicians have hailed our country as both a beacon and leading exemplar of individual liberty and freedom. Although the pledge states “...liberty and justice for all,” the United States has not lived up to the promise of freedom and the claim in the Pledge of Allegiance because it does not apply to every citizen, even though that is what the Pledge of Allegiance promises; immigrants were, and still are, mocked and discriminated against, and certain genders, races and religions are not given the same rights as others and are treated differently.
The Pledge of Allegiance is a statement that many students in the U.S. learn at a young age. Without question of its origin and meaning, most students restate the flag salute often, if not daily. Historically, the pledge that is said today is a result of revisions of various pledges. The first pledge was written by Colonel George Bach in 1887 and was used in some schools. Five years following, Francis Bellamy, who was an English speaking immigrant, Baptist minister, and a socialist created another pledge. This pledge was the foundation for the pledge that is said today. It read, “‘I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all’”("The Pledge of Allegiance: A Search for Common Ground”). Bellamy’s pledge was first published in a children’s magazine. The goal for the establishment of this pledge was to teach young children the basic ideals of the U.S. constitution. The evolution of the pledge did not end for over fifty years. Through debates on whether or not the words “under God” should be added, the final pledge as stated today reads, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, under God, for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” ("The Pledge of Allegiance: A Search for Common Ground”). As outlined
Today in our modern great nation, we have the freedom of speech, the right to your own life, and the opportunity to change the way we live. At least to some extent. In the other parts of the world, people do not always have the freedoms we have. In the story of anthem, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 lives in a country where freedom does not exist. But rather controlled by a higher power. Equality 7-2521, lives in a communist country.
The Pledge of Allegience is a promise or oath of loyalty to the Republic of United States of America. The Pledge was originally written in August, 1892 by an American Baptist minister and social activist, Francis Bellamy. The original "Pledge of Allegiance" was published in the September 8 issue of the popular children's
Communism doesn't understand the human psychology. Under communism, people are forced to contribute to society, yet it doesn't factor in the reason people work. The reason people work is to get money and then use said money to buy whatever it is they want or need. So, people work to get what they want. "Humans need incentives to want to work and under communism, ideology provides no incentive" (Perry). Communism fails to provide an incentive to work because the government tells you what good or service you must provide and in return the government gives what you need to survive. "From each
Throughout history, there have been many systems developed in order to have a better society. Two of the most analyzed, and debated systems that have tired to change an economy for the best are communism, and capitalism. Communism, and capitalism have been compared on many levels, such as why they will or will not work, and which one works better. Throughout this essay I will concentrate on the differences, and similarities of how each operates, along with the benefits, and problems that each of them produces.
The Pledge of Allegiance has gone through a lot of changes throughout history. In 1892, the Pledge was written by Francis Bellamy with the original wording “I Pledge
Knowledge & Understanding The outcome of King Louis XIV’s trial was decided by a Jury consisting of a total of 693 deputies. These deputies voted to determine Louis fate, using their opinion to determine the answer to a series of three questions. The first question was on whether the King was guilty or not, the next one was determining if a referendum was necessary, and the last question was asking what punishment was most suitable. When asked the second question, which was asking if a referendum (or a second hearing) was necessary, the vote became more split unlike the total vote for the first question, which determined whether the King was guilty or not.
The autobiography My Bondage and My Freedom, by Frederick Douglass, illustrates the life and the journey of a born slave in Maryland, into liberation and the gradual understanding of slavery’s inconsistencies in general. He tell his story the public sphere, white non slaveholders, in hopes of helping them gain a better understanding of what slavery truly is from a first hand perspective. It starts off with a realization that he, his grandmother, and everyone around him belonged to someone named “old master” at a very young age. Growing up, he witnesses the violent lashings of his acquaintances, the horrific working conditions that was to be his future and the overall social status between him, an African man, and the white slave holders.
Imagine living in a country where the government controls almost everything you do. You can not own your own property, you can not work a job other than what the government picks for you, and you have few if any rights (“Capitalism, Socialism or Communism”). That is what communism is like. People under capitalism have the maximum amount of choices in life, they have many rights, and people can make their own decisions. Now let me explain.
Most Americans know liberty as the “state or quality of being free.” However, there is more to the word liberty then just being free. Liberty can mean that people have the power to do as they please and have the freedom from physical resistant. But depending on the context, there is more than one definition of liberty. Another definition of liberty is privilege. Privilege for people go and roam freely within specified limits. Merriam- Webster says liberty can also mean the act of going beyond normal limits. This means that people take the liberty to do or engage in activities that are beyond their normal limits. It means to take a risk or chance, as when someone wants to take risk and deviance from their daily practice. The meaning of the word liberty changes depending on the context of the word. Parents and
