Linguistics In Linguistics

In the field of Modern Languages and Linguistics, words are of great importance. A language’s phonology (study of how sounds are organized and used), morphology (study of the form and structure of words), syntax (study of the rules that govern sentence structure), semantics (study of meaning of words, sentences, and expressions), pragmatics (study of aspects of meaning and language use and context), and phonetics (study of human speech sounds) all play an important part in everyday life. These have a major impact in understanding the intent of what is spoken or heard. Linguistic: the scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics.

At the beginning of the semester, I thought that linguistics was more so limited to the pronunciations of words and how they were constructed. Throughout the class I learned that linguistics is the students of language as a whole. Linguistics is also about how we perceive and detect

It was such a pleasure taking this class. I was always interested in linguistics and wanted to dive deeper into the subject. Linguistics is a very broad topic with a lot of information to cover. While taking this class, the information provided refreshed my mind about many concepts and situations that I experience on a daily basis. It’s easy to wake up and take advantage of the day without acknowledging different uses of language. It’s imperative for everyone to become more aware of how everyone communicates; families, friends, employees, public figures, and even companies. Language is apart of who we are as a human race and it’s beautiful to break down the barriers and learn more about it.

Everyone has a different interpretation of the word, “invention”. However the word is simply defined as; a new device, method of process developed from study and experimentation. An invention is just a mental fabrication; it’s a falsehood (Dictionary.com 2013).1 Although in the essays, “Why I write” by Joan Didion, “Life in a new Language” by Eva Hoffman, and “Basmati Rice: An Essay about Words” by Audrey Thomas, each author has their own view on the English language, how they each began inventing their own writing styles, and also their reasons for why they chose to become writers. These are the three things that make their definitions of invention very particular and their own.

Linguistics has impacted cognitive psychology as the quest to understand language acquisition and the structure of language itself is undertaken. Linguistics is a complex and multifaceted; it includes language structural patterns and language development (Barsalou, 2005). The process of language development is complicated and dense, as the study of language is examined; the role of cognition is inherently examined and analyzed. Sternberg (2006) also explores language as an innate process and presents the idea that humans are born ready for language as a biological and cognitive process.

One of the most important elements all cultures possess is the language which represents each one . Language is of vital importance to people’s lives, since it is a way of communicating with others. Language also offers people the ability to create and maintain relationships with others. Each language includes numerous varieties, named dialects. Languages and dialects have some main differences and the distinction of their boundaries is considered to be a difficult issue.

Language is the way humans communicate with eachother. Most of us use it verbally, many use it in writing and other use sign language in order to communicate. Language is part of almost everything amongst us, we read it or hear it on a daily basis. If we are driving we read signs on the road, when we buy stuff we read labels and we could not read without knowing the language, and when we speak we also use language. But language does not stand alone, linguistics is a huge part of it. In my opinion, linguistics is by far one of the most intriguing subjects and classes I have ever taken before. I believe it is a subject everyone seems to be familiar with, yet not really aware of how and why we know the gist of it. Lingustics is by far one of the most intriguing subjects and classes I have ever taken before. In my opinion, it is a subject everyone seems to be familiar with, yet not really aware of how and why we know the gist of it. Lingustics is the scientific study of human language and its structure, we study language because it teaches us how to communicate with others. Language is everywhere and part of our everyday lives, we use language to communicate with everyone around us. Morphology and morphemes are what we know as the sounds of language, morphology are what we know as words and synatx are the sentences that compose our language. There is a lot more to language than what the common person knows, language and the way we speak it all has meaning behind it. I believe that to know and be able to speak any language is a privilege and for those who are bilingual and get to experience it

Language can be called as a system of communication.It is the human capability to communicate and interact with each other vie speech sounds or signs.It is a mediam of portraying our views.It is a mean of sharing feelings and ideas together and the scientific study of any language is called linguistics.

Linguistics according to Merriam Webster dictionary,” is the study of human speech including the units, nature, structure and modification of language”. (Merriam-Webster dictionary, 1828)

In this essay I will discuss the definition of the concept grammar in linguistic science and thee attitude teachers may have towards such a conceptualization of what grammar is. I will go into detail by explaining perspective and descriptive grammar.

Originally, linguistics was my intended major. Recently, I decided to switch my major to anthropology, and more specifically, the field of linguistic anthropology. For the linguistics major, one of my requirements for transferring to a university was to take a language and culture class. Several of the first lectures focused on the history of linguistics and anthropology. I was introduced to the idea that language, thought, and culture all influence each other. This meant that studying language, when divorced from the concept of culture, creates a myopic view of linguistics. It had never occurred to me that linguistic does not occur in a vacuum and needs to be examined alongside the culture it is associated with. Seeds of change were then sown in my mind. As the class progressed, I found myself growing more interested in the subject as a whole, and so anthropology became my major.
